L’histoire :
A 60 ans, Kenzo Okada est persuadé d’être le parfait looser.Tout le monde le lui dit, et le traite comme tel : ses collègues, qui se foutent de lui, sa femme, qui le méprise, ses enfants, qui l’ignorent. Même le médecin, qui lui file des médicaments contre le diabète comme des bonbons, même l’hôtesse du « pôle emploi », lorsqu’il est foutu à la porte. Et quand, de retour chez lui, il trouve un appartement vide, une demande divorce posée sur la table et son relevé de compte bancaire à zéro, il pense qu’il n’a plus qu’une seule issue : aller se pendre.

Mais même la mort ne veut pas de lui. Avoir raté sa vie, pour rater jusqu’à son suicide… Kenzo préfère en rire, et décide que puisqu’il est enfin libéré de toute entrave, il lui reste une tâche à accomplir : assumer sa nouvelle et totale liberté. Et pour cela, se réfugier au coeur de la forêt, et réapprendre à vivre comme un véritable homme des bois. Un looser, Kenzo? il va prouver que non, à tous, et à lui-même en premier. « Je ne suis pas mort! »

Ce que j’en pense :
Je ne suis pas mort
n’est pas un manga misérabiliste sur la vie d’un SDF, ni un délire néo-baba-cool sur l’homme qui redécouvre la nature, la vraie, tout ça. Ni les Amants du Pont-Neuf ni Into the Wild. Je ne suis pas mort est un récit d’aventures moderne, grand public, doublé d’une belle histoire d’amour, et abordant des thèmes aussi simples et éternels que l’affirmation de soi, le respect d’autrui, les relations père-fils, la vie de couple, la valeur travail, l’argent… Ce qui est nouveau, c’est la manière d’aborder ces questions. En choisissant un héros vieillissant, sans qualités particulières; en le retirant de son avenir tout tracé (la fin de carrière, la retraite puis la vie de grand-père) et en le projetant dans un univers a priori hostile, où l’homme âgé n’est pas supposé avoir sa place… Hiroshi Motomiya part d’une tabula rasa, et donne à son héros la possibilité de renaître, et de tout recréer à partir de zéro.

 La première question que se pose le héros de Je ne suis pas mort, c’est : à quel moment ma vie a commencé à partir en vrille? Mais la vraie question serait plutôt : existe-t-il une autre façon de vivre? La réponse que choisit d’apporter Hiroshi Motomiya est oui. En ce sens, Je ne suis pas mort est une variation radicale de l’oeuvre phare de Motomiya, Salaryman Kintaro, qui prenait déjà pour héros un homme qui se construit un mode de vie en marge du modèle social dominant. Oh, il ne faut pas en attendre une dénonciation politique explicite, mais disons une critique en forme de conte moral. Les personnages sont des monsieur/madame Tout-le-monde, qui ayant d’abord accepté de vivre selon les principes immémoriaux de sacrifice, d’abnégation et de respect du travail, sont rejetés du système auxquels ils s’étaient pliés de bonne grâce. Et se retrouvent face à une alternative qu’ils n’envisageaient pas : ou bien accepter la mort, selon la tradition qui exige le sacrifice ultime de l’individu non conforme, ou bien choisir une nouvelle vie marginale mais libre, et inventer son propre modèle social.
Ce qui ne va pas sans erreurs ni tâtonnements. Car Motomiya ne prétend pas détenir la vérité : il suit ses héros en observant leurs doutes, leurs angoisses, leurs petites morts successives, jusqu’à une renaissance qui n’allait pas de soi. La manière dont Motomiya met en scène cette histoire est touchante et vraie : si on peut chipoter en trouvant le point de départ assez irréaliste (un sexagénaire diabétique et dépressif se transforme en parfait homme des bois), on s’attache suffisamment vite aux personnages pour accepter les libertés que prend l’auteur avec la vraisemblance. D’autant que c’est avec finesse, par petites touches, que les questions énumérées plus haut sont abordées.

Je ne suis pas mort était apparemment annoncé comme un one-shot. La bonne surprise c’est donc la parution d’une suite, qui pourrait également se lire comme un deuxième one-shot, vu qu’il se situe plusieurs années plus tard et transforme des personnages secondaires en personnages principaux. Mais si on a aimé le premier, il est indispensable de lire le second (et réciproquement). En effet, certaines questions posées sur le passé de Kenzo Okada trouvent leurs réponses dans ce second volume, notamment sur ses raisons d’agir, ainsi que sur les motivations qui poussent son entourage à le rejeter.

Le second volume prend également une nouvelle direction, celle de la quête du père par son fils, sujet maintes fois abordé dans les mangas, mais rarement de façon aussi abrupte, ni aussi naïvement émouvante. On pourrait ricaner de cette naïveté, de voir les héros virils et costauds pleurer aussi facilement, mais c’est une liberté narrative que l’auteur s’octroie, afin de mieux souligner la renaissance aux vrais sentiments de ces machos nippons refoulés.

Est-il nécessaire de parler du dessin, du style, au risque d’allonger encore ce billet? Il suffit de dire que c’est un vrai seinen à l’ancienne dans la droite ligne du style gekiga, soigné, simple et efficace.  On est dans la tradition des Tezuka, des Hirata et des Yamagami : la maîtrise de l’auteur est évidente, il ne s’embarrasse pas d’effets inutiles ou faussement spectaculaires, et va droit à l’essentiel : le récit.

Récit prenant, touchant, vivant. Et que je recommande vivement. Reste à espérer que ce manga rencontre le succès, suffisamment en tous cas pour amener une parution en France de Salaryman Kintaro; il ne me semble pas, sauf erreur de ma part, que cela soit annoncé ?

      De rien ! Attention, pour ne pas spoiler je n’ai rien dit de l’histoire du 2… Mais tu connais la fin du 1er, alors tu dois t’attendre à une nouvelle intrigue… je dirais que les deux tomes sont comme deux one-shot qui dialoguent entre eux… j’en ai déjà trop dit…

    Très bon billet pour un très bon manga (en tout cas le premier, je n’ai pas encore eu le temps de lire le second qui vient de sortir).

    C’est drôle que tu parles de « Into the wild » car j’en parlais aussi dans ma chronique de l’époque et je trouvais que ce manga y faisait écho dans son pitch de départ : l’homme qui décide de tout plaquer, cartes de crédits, systeme de santé etc. comportement pour le moins extreme et qui amène à réflexion sur la dépendance que nous avons tous vis-à-vis de la société.

    Ce retour aux sources m’a également beaucoup touché, dans son côté authentique. Même si par moment on tire beaucoup sur la corde sensible, cela reste une jolie leçon de vie et c’est bien là le principal.

      J’ai cité Into The Wild mais j’aurais pu citer Jeremiah Johnson, beaucoup plus fort sur cet aspect « retour à la nature » ; mais je ne suis pas sîr que beaucoup s’en souviennent, par-contre, Into The Wild a bien marché récemment. Je n’ai d’ailleurs pas été trop emballé par ce film.
