Les chroniques d’un vieux con : 1- la ligne claire

Je vous dois un coming-out : je ne suis pas un  newbie à temps plein. Il m’arrive même assez souvent d’être un vieux con. Attention : ça n’a rien à voir avec mon âge, qui est en passe de devenir un sujet de private joke dans la blogosphère. Non, je parle plutôt d’une tendance à étaler ma science avec prétention et fatalisme, du genre « c’était mieux avant« . Ce penchant, je l’avais déjà enfant, conscient de l’intérêt que je pouvais ainsi susciter chez les adultes. Il s’est poursuivi au collège et au lycée, où je me complaisais dans une posture d’intello précoce, en faisant du théâtre, en « publiant » une revue de poésie surréaliste et en manifestant des goûts musicaux très minoritaires. Périodiquement, ça ressort, alors pour le rendre acceptable, je le pare des oripeaux de la nostalgie, et je peux même en faire un billet. Comme celui-ci.

Aujourd’hui, le sujet, c’est la bande dessinée. Celle que je dévorais par piles d’albums, en les empruntant à mes amis, mes cousins, ma bibliothèque municipale… et dont j’ai reconstitué une collection présentable, souvent d’occasion, chez les bouquinistes ou dans les vide-greniers. En voici un aperçu, sur la partie gauche de la photo ci-contre (agrandissable – cf. le billet Dans quel état gère).

Il ne s’agit donc pas, aujourd’hui, de manga.  Quand je regarde mes étagères, censées représenter mes goûts, je vois : de nombreuses séries complètes de classiques franco-belges, comme Astérix, Gaston ou Blueberry. Egalement une bonne dose de héros plus adultes tels que Nestor Burma, Corto Maltese ou Masquerouge. Bref, de bonnes choses, mais pas de quoi distinguer un choix personnel. Ah, tiens, l’intégrale de Donjon, plusieurs séries signées Yann, comme les Innommables, Nicotine Goudron… Goût immodéré pour l’humour parodique et borderline, donc. Enfin, l’oeil est attiré par des albums isolés, aux auteurs plus ou moins connus, parfois datés, qui ont un point commun : ce que l’on appelle, faute de mieux, la ligne claire.

Si vous vous intéressez un tant soit peu à la bande dessinée – je veux dire au-delà de Titeuf et de Lanfeust – vous savez de quoi je parle : la ligne claire,  ce style faussement enfantin héritée de Hergé et de Franquin, avec des contours nets et des aplats de couleurs, sans hachures ni clair-obscur, dessinant des personnages plutôt stylisés et des décors sobres et réalistes. Que ce soit au Journal de Tintin (dessin réaliste) ou au Journal de Spirou (dessin plus « rond »), c’est le style de la plupart des auteurs dits franco-belges des années 50 et 60, et il a enchanté mon enfance. Les années 70 ont amené des styles nouveaux, comme le style hachuré de Giraud ou de Bilal, jusqu’à la caricature griffonnée façon Reiser, mais je suis resté fidèle à ma classique ligne claire, et lorsque celle-ci a connu un renouveau lors des années 80, avec les Floc’h, Chaland,  et autres Ted Benoît, je ne pouvais qu’être fan. Mais plutôt que de me lancer dans une analyse détaillée du style ligne claire, je vous propose de vous présenter certains de mes albums préférés du genre, je crois que ce sera plus parlant.

• Hergé, Tintin au Tibet (1960)
Si Hergé est « l’inventeur » (à son insu) de la ligne claire, alors Tintin au Tibet en est la quintessence. Je le tiens pour son meilleur, le plus abouti graphiquement, mais aussi scénaristiquement : sur un canevas au fond très simple – une quête dans l’Himalaya pour sauver un ami disparu – Tintin et Haddock deviennent de véritables êtres  de chair et de sang, dotés de sentiments. C’est la seule et unique fois que l’on voit Tintin pleurer. Comme si le décor immaculé des neiges éternelles les livrait à eux-mêmes, seuls, sans super-méchant à poursuivre, ni enquête à mener. Au diapason de ce récit, le dessin tend vers l’épure… regardez les montagnes : un simple aplat de gris sur blanc, et tout y est. Du grand art.

• Bob De Moor, l’Enigmatique Mr Barelli (1950)
Du sous-Hergé? C’est dur, mais un peu vrai. Il faut voir pour le croire à quel point Bob De Moor développe un tel mimétisme. En même temps, c’est logique : Hergé travaillait en studio, comme les mangakas d’aujourd’hui, et De Moor a été son principal assistant. Est-ce que cela donne de bons albums? On se souvient des critiques négatives qui accueillirent son travail sur les 3 Formules du Professeur Sato. Mais Barelli ne fut pas un travail de commande. Voici une série policière gentiment rétro, qui évoque, dans ses bons moments, le Fantômas de Louis de Funès. Charme désuet, dessins travaillés, intrigue vite oubliée : un album témoin, une curiosité pour collectionneur attendri.

• Franquin, le Repaire de la Murène (1957)
Hergé l’affirmait : « C’est un grand artiste, à côté duquel je ne suis qu’un piètre dessinateur. » L’aveu permet de redonner à Franquin sa vraie place : celle d’un créateur capable de donner vie aux plus étonnantes visions. Cet album date de plus d’un demi-siècle, et pourtant le trait est si vif, les couleurs si chatoyantes… L’océan est à Franquin ce que le Tibet est à Hergé : un décor intemporel, pur et angoissant, offrant à l’auteur un terrain digne de sa maîtrise graphique. Intemporel, mais également témoin de son époque : j’adore l’intrigue policière avec ses truands de cinéma, tels John Héléna, le capitaine déchu, et Hamadryas, l’armateur mafieux. Un classique, où je replonge avec 100 fois plus de plaisir que dans le fastidieux Grand Bleu.

• Tillieux, le Chinois à deux roues (1967)
Gil Jourdan, c’est l’équivalent BD des vieux films français de gangsters, quelque part entre les Tontons flingueurs et Touchez pas au Grisbi, et des romans de Léo Malet ou de Frédéric Dard. Dans Libellule s’évade puis Popaïne et vieux tableaux (qui fut à l’époque censuré pour outrage à la police!), naît le duo de choc entre le détective cynique et le truand repenti à la grande gueule, vite complété par Crouton, le flic timide et bougon. Le Chinois à deux roues est dans une autre veine : un camion file sur des pistes détrempées par une pluie de fin du monde, et on laisse cette fois Lautner pour l’aventure façon Le Salaire de la peur, de Clouzot, avec toujours le même mélange d’aventure et de jeux de mots foireux. Et la ligne claire devient cinémascope.

• Floc’h & Rivière, le Rendez-vous de Sevenoaks (1977)
Premier album (et mon préféré) de la trilogie Albany & Sturgess, Sevenoaks est un bijou d’humour noir, truffé de références à Poe, à Agatha Christie, à Hitchcock et, bien entendu à Edgar P. Jacobs, le plus british des dessinateurs belges. Je ne vous dis rien de l’intrigue, implacable ; le duo de détectives amateurs Albany et Sturgess y joue moins un rôle d’enquêteurs que de témoins, en leur qualités respectives de critique littéraire et d’écrivain de romans policiers. Très fidèle à l’esthétique d’Hergé et de Jacobs, auxquels les auteurs rendent ouvertement hommage, l’album est un manifeste de la ligne claire : des récits adultes avec un scénario rigoureux et un graphisme élégant, épuré, presque minimaliste.

Pétillon, les Disparus d’Apostrophes (1982)
Dans cette sélection, cet album est un peu un intrus, le sale gosse qui fait des grimaces sur la photo de classe. Avec Jack Palmer, son personnage fétiche de détective looser, Pétillon a perpétuellement évolué, aussi bien dans la manière de le dessiner que dans sa mise en scène. Au début proche du style Crumb, il a évolué vers un trait aujourd’hui proche de la caricature de presse. Mais dans l’intervalle, il se stabilise dans un trait… très ligne claire, avec ces merveilles d’humour féroce et foutraque que sont les Disparus d’Apostrophes, Le prince de la BD et le Chanteur de Mexico, parodies respectives de la télévision, de la BD et du show-bizz. C’est très daté 80′s, certes, mais voir Bernard Pivot mener l’enquête avec Jack Palmer, ça reste un grand moment.

• Ted Benoît, Cité Lumière (1986)
Que Ted Benoît ait repris le flambeau de Jacobs pour la série Blake et Mortimer, ça n’a rien d’étonnant, quand on connaît sa maîtrise graphique et sa méticulosité. Mais c’est bien sa série Ray Banana qui dévoile toute l’originalité de son talent : un trait ouvertement ligne claire, mais des ambiances très film noir hollywoodien, et un humour pince-sans-rire. Comme les personnages de Floc’h, de Denis ou de Chaland (plus bas), Banana est un anti-héros, embarqué sans le vouloir dans des aventures qu’il traverse en prenant des coups, sans perdre de son flegme ultra-cool. En noir et blanc (Berceuse Electrique) ou en couleurs (Cité Lumière), les aventures de Ray Banana sont un régal.

• Jean-Claude Denis, le Nain Jaune (1986)
Prix du public à Angoulême en 1987, le Nain Jaune est un polar tendre et désabusé, qui me rappelle un peu les films très eighties de Beinex (Diva) ou de Carax (Mauvais sang), l’humour en plus. Dans un Paris nocturne et jazzy, Luc Leroi est un dragueur amoureux d’une mystérieuse strip-teaseuse japonaise, embarquée dans une sombre affaire de trafic et de chantage. Si le graphisme de Denis se rattache à l’école de la ligne claire, comme ses compagnons de route Martin Veyron ou Dodo & Ben Radis, c’est avec élégance et poésie, sans révérence exagérée aux grands anciens, pour mieux servir le récit, et l’ancrer dans une époque révolue, mais au charme irrésistible. Une belle histoire, avec un étonnant twist final.

• Torres, l’intégrale Roco Vargas (1983-1989)
Un espagnol chez les franco-belges ! Oui, mais encore un auteur révélé dans (à suivre), ma revue BD culte des années 80/90. Le style de Daniel Torres se distingue des précédents par son inspiration, pastiche d’Hollywood comme Ray Banana, mais avec une exubérance et une fantaisie qui ne sont qu’à lui. Le contexte space-opera s’inspire des comics et de Flash Gordon, dans un genre rétro-futuriste délirant mais très ligne claire. Cette intégrale reprend les quatre premières aventures de Roco Vargas, ancien astronaute devenu patron de night-club et écrivain de pulps, qui reprend du service pour combattre les démons de son passé. Scènes chocs, jolies filles (plein!) et vaisseaux spatiaux, c’est drôle, souvent too much et superbement dessiné.

Chaland & Yann, F52 (1989)
S’il ne fallait en garder qu’un… Regrets éternels en mémoire d’Yves Chaland, surdoué trop tôt disparu, en 1990, lui qu’on rêvait de voir reprendre Spirou et Fantasio… Car il était prédestiné à le faire… Comme Floc’h, il est autant dessinateur que graphiste, travaillant beaucoup pour la publicité. Grand admirateur de Jijé, de Franquin, de Tillieux et de Macherot, il fait de la ligne claire son langage naturel, qu’il mène vers un nouvel avatar, le style Atome, esthétique de science-fiction à la belge (si), inspirée de l’Atomium à l’Exposition universelle de Bruxelles en 1958. Tous ses abums de Freddy Lombard, son anti-héros fétiche, cousin improbable de Spirou, sont à lire, surtout les trois réalisés avec… Yann au scénario (voir plus bas). La Comète de Carthage et  Vacances à Budapest sont d’authentiques chefs d’oeuvres, remarquablement construits, complexes et elliptiques – des zones d’ombre sont volontairement laissées dans les intrigues, stimulant l’imagination du lecteur. Si je mets en avant F52, sont dernier opus, c’est pour sa perfection graphique, et ses références aux avions de rêve que sont l’Espadon de Jacobs, et le Stratonef H22 de Hergé. Et il y a ce ton, mélancolique et rêveur, humaniste et cruel, marque de la rencontre entre ces deux créateurs d’exception. Si Chaland a disparu, Yann n’a pas baissé pavillon, puisque c’est sous sa plume (et sous le crayon de Schwartz) qu’est sorti l’excellent Groom Vert-de-Gris, en 2009. Ah, si Chaland avait pu le faire… Regrets éternels, disais-je.

(Et pour conclure : un billet entier sur Yann, le trublion scénariste, ça ferait un bon sujet pour une prochaine chronique d’un vieux con, non?)

    Et dire que la ligne claire fut en ses débuts utilisée pour conspuer la BD sous prétexte de « simplicité artistique » comme aiment le dire les experts autant que les profanes. Mais moins d’un demi-siècle plus tard, c’était déjà devenu un gage de qualité…

    Pourtant, la raison derrière la ligne claire est plus technique qu’artistique : tout comme pour les anciens mangas dont le graphisme simple restait avant tout lié à la mauvaise qualité du papier qui exigeait donc un trait réduit au strict minimum, la ligne claire trouve ses racines dans des contraintes semblables – celles des procédés d’imprimerie des périodiques pour la jeunesse.

    D’ailleurs, cette ligne claire date en fait de bien avant Hergé puisqu’il n’a fait que s’y conformer, comme tous les auteurs de BD de son temps : on la distingue nettement dans les premières œuvres de la narration graphique, dès la fin du XIXe siècle.

    J’aime beaucoup le travail de Chaland moi aussi, mais pour ce qui est des lectures de jeunesse qui m’ont marqué, et en dehors de celles citées ici, je pense aux 4 As.

      je partage entièrement ton avis. la ligne claire, on peut au moins la faire remonter à Saint-Ogan (Zig et Puce), et les comics la pratiquaient pour les mêmes raisons techniques (dès Little Nemo en fait). Ceci étant, dès les années 1940 le style a évolué, Milton Caniff utilisait beaucoup plus les ombres et le clair obscur (style qui influença directement Hubinon, puis Hugo Pratt…).

      pour les 4 As, je suis moins fan, je trouve que c’est une bonne lecture pour mon fils, j’en ai d’ailleurs racheté. du même auteur, Craenhals, j’apprécie plus Chevalier Ardent, les Loups de Rougecogne, par exemple…

        Zig et Puce mais aussi Dreamy Daniel (George Davey, 1906) ou Schizzo (Attilio Mussino, 1912), pour notre côté de l’Atlantique. Little Nemo mais aussi Nibsy the Newsboy in Funny Fairyland (1905), une sorte de parodie du précédent par George McManus, ou bien Dreamy Dave (même année) de C.H. Wellington, ou encore Bobby Make Believe (1915) de Frank King ; Polly Sleepyhead (1906), de Peter Newell, en présente aussi des caractéristiques assez évidentes…

        Chez McCay, par contre, la ligne claire date de bien avant Nemo : on la voit déjà dans Tales of the Jungle Imps (1903), dont il « importera » le personnage du petit sauvage dans Nemo justement, et Little Sammy Sneeze (1904) ou encore Hungry Henrietta (janvier 1905).

        J’ai un vague souvenir de Chevalier Ardent et de sa promise Gwendoline aux tresses blondes, du temps où il m’arrivait de lire Le Journal de Tintin – mais ce fut assez ponctuel…

      C’est vrai, je l’avais oublié, mais à la fin du Lotus Bleu, Tintin se laisse gagner par les larmes de l’émotion au moment de quitter ses amis chinois pour repartir en Europe. Mais ce ne sont pas les mêmes larmes. Celles dont je parle dans Tintin au Tibet sont vues en gros plan, et témoignent d’une vraie amertume mêlée de désespoir, lorsqu’il se laisse aller au découragement.
