Histoire subjective des jeux d’aventure : chapitre 1

Lorsqu’on me demande à quels jeux vidéo je m’adonne, sous-entendu quelle est ma console préférée, un léger silence gêné précède ma réponse : je n’ai jamais eu de console. C’est un peu comme quand je dis que je n’ai pas la télé. Les regards se font fuyants, ou au contraire compatissants, et ceux qui continuent de m’adresser la parole m’invitent à me libérer de ce poids honteux : « Tu sais, tu peux tout nous dire, à nous, nous sommes tes amis« . Avant de chuchoter derrière mon dos. D’autres me jettent des cailloux.

Après il faut que les rassure en leur avouant que, oui, j’ai longtemps regardé la télé, et même, que j’aimais bien ça. Et que j’ai beaucoup joué à des jeux sur PC. Là, je suis de nouveau admis dans la catégorie des gens fréquentables. Mais quand j’ajoute que je n’aime pas les jeux de baston, et que je jouais uniquement à des jeux d’aventure de point & click, c’est encore le même silence lourd de sous-entendus.

Mais je sais que tout n’est pas perdu. Grâce à ce blog, je vais pouvoir me justifier, et retrouver la fierté. Les jeux d’aventure de point & click, c’est un grand moment dans l’histoire du jeu vidéo, et j’en ai été un adepte invétéré. J’inaugure aujourd’hui une série d’articles sur le sujet, afin d’évoquer, non sans nostalgie, les grands moments que j’ai vécus en jouant à Myst, Alone in the Dark, Ultima VII, Atlantis, Sam and Max hit the Road, Versailles, et autres Chevaliers de Baphomet.

Toute une époque…

Chapitre 1 : 10 ans de réflexion : la (courte) saga du point & click
Une époque, oui, qui remonte aux années 80, lorsqu’arriva la première révolution des jeux vidéo : l’invention du point and click. Il y avait de nombreux jeux d’aventure alors. Mais tous étaient bâtis sur la même interface statique : des écrans en VGA et du texte, beaucoup de texte, dans lequel on évoluait par sélection au clavier. Les premiers Ultima, ou King’s Quest, par exemple, c’était vraiment la préhistoire. Et je ne m’y intéressais pas plus que ça.

Tout à changé vers la fin des années 80, quand arriva sur mon PC le premier des vrais jeux d’aventure point & click, le célèbre Indiana Jones et la dernière Croisade directement transposé du film, par Lucas Arts. Pour la première fois, c’est à la souris que je pouvais faire avancer l’histoire, en sélectionnant les actions « parler », « examiner », « prendre », « utiliser »… J’imagine que pour vous les djeun’s, ça semble invraisemblable mais avant, c’était juste impossible de faire cela. Comme cette nouvelle interface s’accompagnait de réels progrès dans la résolution graphique, c’était carrément l’extase. En plus, l’histoire était celle du film (avec quelques adaptations) et en conservait l’esprit, l’humour et les rebondissements. Bon, ok, pour l’action, c’était pas ça, mais ce n’était pas du tout le but recherché.

Les jeux d’aventure de point & click comme Indiana Jones et la dernière Croisade, puis sa suite The Fate of Atlantis (sur un scénario inédit), consistaient en la résolution d’énigmes logiques et prenantes, ponctuées de dialogues, et le moteur du plaisir était la réflexion et surtout l’imagination. Je vous vois venir : bonjour la prise de tête ! Je ne sais pas quoi répondre à cela, sinon : vous avez un PC? Alors procurez vous ces jeux, et essayez… C’est addictif au possible.

Dans les années qui ont suivi, Lucas Arts a continué à proposer des jeux aussi drôles qu’excitants. Le must de l’époque, et un énorme best-seller, c’est un jeu dont les gamers intéressés par le vintage parlent encore aujourd’hui avec émotion : Day of the Tentacle. Sorti il y a plus de 15 ans, le jeu se vend encore aujourd’hui.

Day of the Tentacle est le jeu d’aventure qui a donné ses lettres de noblesse au point & click. L’histoire, originale, est celle de trois teenagers passablement abrutis envoyés dans le passé par un savant fou, pour capturer une créature maléfique, la Tentacule, et accessoirement sauver le monde. Bien sûr ça ne se passe pas comme prévu, et les trois aventuriers se retrouvent coincés à des époques différentes. Un humour potache, de nombreuses trouvailles de scénario, et surtout un style visuel cartoonesque alors inédit dans les jeux vidéos, voilà les qualités qui font de Day of the Tentacle un classique du genre. Cela dit, le jeu était difficile, et nombreux sont ceux qui ne l’ont jamais fini. Il m’a fallu pas mal de persévérance et de sauvegardes pour y parvenir.

Lucas Arts, dopé par le succès des Indiana Jones et de Day of the Tentacle, a continué dans la même veine, avec Full Throttle, la saga des Monkey Island, et surtout, mon absolu préféré du monde de l’univers des plus forts, le génial Sam and Max hit the Road, le seul jeu du genre que j’ai intégralement recommencé à plusieurs reprises, et encore récemment, comme on se replonge dans une BD ou un manga qu’on adore. Sam and Max, c’est adapté d’un comic avec deux héros improbables, Sam, un chien détective privé au flegme et au cynisme légendaires, et Max, son adjoint, un lapin blanc psychopathe, qui ne connaît qu’une manière de résoudre les problèmes : la violence physique.

Le style et l’interface sont directement issus de Day of the Tentacle, mais une plus grande jouabilité, des énigmes plus logiques (si on en accepte le contexte totalement loufoque) et une ambiance de polar parodique réussie en font, à mon sens, un jeu beaucoup plus prenant et addictif. Des progrès ont été réalisés dans l’interface : le système de point & click se base sur des icônes et des inventaires intuitifs et graphiquement lisibles (et plus seulement des verbes).

Je ne vais pas en dire trop sur l’histoire, qu’il vaut mieux découvrir soi-même pour en apprécier tout le sel ; mais grosso modo, Sam et Max enquêtent sur la disparition de Bigfoot et de la Femme-Girafe, et se rendent sur des lieux aussi délirants que le parc d’attraction de la pelote de laine géante, le musée des légumes disparus ou le golf aux alligators. La version française est brillante, la traduction des dialogues est excellente et les doublages respectent le caractère à la fois cartoonesque et sarcastique des personnages.

Mais il n’y avait pas que Lucas Arts pour sortir des jeux d’aventure point & click réussis. Dans les années 90, j’ai aimé jouer avec Discworld, Leisure Suit Larry et une chouette saga d’aventure : Les Chevaliers de Baphomet, et sa suite : Les boucliers de Quetzalcoatl. Plus dans l’esprit d’Indiana Jones que de Day of the Tentacle, ces deux jeux présentent le même principe : résoudre un mystère et avancer dans l’histoire, en faisant interagir le héros avec son environnement, par une interface intuitive et une gestion d’inventaire. Dans un Paris fantaisiste comme on en voit que dans les films d’Hollywood (terrasses de café, gendarmes à képis et parisiens à béret), un touriste américain, George Stobbart, se retrouve mêlé à une affaire qui ressuscite le mystère des Templiers…

L’ambiance rappelle un peu Indiana Jones, mais aussi les comédies américaines comme Charade ou Arabesque, ou encore les films d’Hitchcock. Un mélange de gothique, de mythologique, d’humour et de thriller très réussi. La jouabilité est excellente, et les personnages charismatiques : George Stobbart, son optimisme en béton armé et son accent américain, s’opposant à la personnalité de Nicole Collard, la journaliste free-lance, aussi mignonne que gouailleuse. Alors que l’histoire des Chevaliers de Baphomet se situe essentiellement en France,  les Boucliers de Quetzalcoatl amènent les deux héros dans des pays plus exotiques, mais toujours avec le même esprit et le même intérêt.

J’ai adoré jouer à ces jeux. La question, pourquoi n’ont-ils pas eu de descendance, est à rechercher dans deux facteurs apparus à la fin des années 90 : la généralisation de la 3D et l’apparition des consoles, qui ont orienté les jeux vers plus de gameplay, d’action et d’effets visuels, au détriment de la narration, de la complexité de l’intrigue et de la réflexion comme base du jeu. J’ai décroché quand ils ont été remplacés par des jeux type Lara Croft, où l’action pas mal répétitive prenait le pas sur l’imagination, et où les énigmes (par ailleurs assez simplifiées) devenaient de simples étapes entre de longues scènes de baston, flingues aux deux poings. Même les studios comme Lucas Arts, par exemple, abandonnèrent le jeu d’aventure point & click 2D, pour se concentrer sur les exploitations de la licence Star Wars.

Heureusement, d’autres studios, comme Cyan, ont (momentanément) donné un nouveau souffle au jeu d’aventure point & click , en exploitant habilement la 3D. Ainsi naquirent Myst, ses suites et ses avatars, qui m’ont littéralement passionné. La suite au prochain chapitre…

    A noter d’ailleurs pour ceux que ça intéresse mais qui aiment pas s’éborgner sur les coins pointus des pixels que des portages à la tronche un peu plus actuelle sorte sur 360 pour la saa des Monkey Island =D

      Ce ne sont pas des jeux d’objets cachés, mais des jeux d’aventure… le point & click, ici, c’est juste une interface pour avancer dans l’histoire, et rien que sam and max, c’est une expérience en soi…

      et puis, si moi j’y arrive, alors…

    Le point and click n’a pas totalement disparu, il a eut ses descendants : Des jeux comme Phoenix wright – on joue un avocat qui fait aussi detective, et donc à de nombreuses reprises on a des scènes ou on touche les élements pour débloquer des choses, parler avec les gens etc, et des scènes de « procès » ou on doit choisir les bons arguments pour gagner le procès – ou professeur layton – un autre genre, mais très semblable au point and click toujours : On a des lieux ou on clique sur les élements, et on débloques ainsi des énigmes, et l’ensemble de l’histoire est englobé dans une énigme plus grande – existent. Ce sont des jeux sur nintendo Ds, peut-être que ça te plairait ? En tous cas, ils sont dans la même veine, avec une histoire avant tout =]

    Parmi ces vieux jeux, je suis surprise que tu ne cite pas Monkey island ? (Ou alors tu va en parler plus tard ?). Ce genre de jeux, je regrette de ne pas avoir put y jouer à l’époque, du coup je me dit que je pourrais les découvrir maintenant, mais tout de même, l’age fait que j’ai du mal à me mettre dedans, comme pour certains autres vieux jeux que je n’ai pas fait et que je regrette de ne pas avoir découvert et temps et en heure v_v;

    Enfin bon, je connais les regards outrés : Autant je joue à la console, autant ça fait bien 10 ans que je ne regarde pas la télé. Ca à le don d’affoler mes collègues ^^ » « Heeeein mais tu fais quoi alors ?! » v__v;;

      J’ai bien aimé les Monkey Island, je les ai (très) succintement signalés plus haut. Je n’ai pas cité Grim Fandango, dernière réalisation Lucas Arts du genre, très beau design mais qui curieusement demandait un contrôle au clavier, et j’ai abandonné très vite…

      Professeur Layton, on m’en a pas mal parlé, mais je ne suis pas encore dans l’idée d’acheter une console. Quand mon fils en réclamera une avec insistance, j’étudierai la question. ^^

    Cela fait du bien de réentendre parler de ces jeux auxquels je jouait assidument, Chevalier de baphomet et sa suite (que j’ai encore sur ps1) et Riven. Souvenir du début de notre vie de couple ou je montrais fièrement à ma douce : « t’as vu? J’ai trouvé!!!! » et elle me retournait un sourire maternel de fausse fierté en regardant au ciel… Nostalgie quand tu nous tiens!
