Je viens de terminer la lecture des 8 premiers tomes de Vinland Saga, qui constituent le premier arc de la série en cours (j’aime bien utiliser cette expression, ça fait celui qui s’y connaît). Je dois reconnaître que je suis assez enthousiaste, car quoi (carquois, haha), si les 8 tomes équivalent à un gros volume épais (épée, héhé), le suspense du début à la fin de la boucle y est (bouclier, hihi). Je sais, mon goût du calembour me perdra, car (drakkar, huhu) il y en a que ça fâche (hache, fouyaya…).
Z’avez de la chance, je n’ai rien trouvé avec arbalète, vu que je ne suis pas une flèche. Bon allez, je me lance.
L’histoire, les personnages
(Pouf, pouf, un peu de sérieux – mais si j’en suis capable : je vais commencer par un bref rappel historique. Et spoiler le tome 1, parce que bon. Or donc… )
Depuis la fin du 9ème siècle, l’Angleterre est sous domination danoise. Le pays est divisé en deux zones principales : l’est, le Danelaw, région directement administrée par les danois, et le sud-ouest, laissé aux anglo-saxons, qui leur paient un lourd tribut. La paix est régulièrement troublée par des rébellions anglaises, et les vikings mènent des raids de représailles. En 1013, Sven, roi du Danemark, est décidé à mettre fin au statu quo, et à établir définitivement sa royauté sur toute l’Angleterre. Il débarque en personne, avec une grande armée, accompagné par son fils cadet, Knut – son fils aîné, Harald, est resté au Danemark comme régent.
La guerre fait rage entre les deux camps, les danois ayant la supériorité, mais échouent encore devant Londres, qui a coupé les ponts sur la Tamise, et demeure imprenable. De part et d’autre, des mercenaires vikings se sont engagés, motivés par l’appât du gain ou par les hasards de la guerre.
A Londres, c’est le célèbre Thorkell (à gauche) qui s’est rallié aux anglais, et à Ethelred, leur roi. Mais une autre troupe de mercenaires, menée par le rusé Askeladd, s’est rangée aux côtés de l’armée de Sven.
Voilà pour le contexte. Le manga commence quelques mois auparavant, lorsque la troupe d’Askeladd mène un raid en terre française. Il profite d’un conflit entre seigneurs locaux pour piller une petite cité sur les bords de la Loire. A cette occasion, il emploie 
les talents de Thorfinn, un jeune combattant doué pour le maniement du couteau et les missions d’infiltration. Thorfinn accomplit avec brio toutes les missions que lui confie Askeladd. Mais il le hait, et son rêve est de le tuer en duel, pour venger la mort de son père, Thors.
Lors du siège de Londres, Thorfinn a de nouveau l’occasion de s’illustrer. Il affronte personnellement Thorkell, le géant invincible, et réussit l’exploit de le blesser. Mais le siège échoue, et Thorkell se lance dans un raid de poursuite de l’armée danoise, en vue de capturer le prince Knut. Askeladd décide de jouer sa propre carte, et de prendre lui aussi Knut en otage. Fin tacticien et manipulateur, à la tête d’une troupe aguerrie et disposant des talents de Thorfinn, mais aussi de Björn, son second à la force herculéenne, Askeladd parviendra-t-il à ses fins? Quel est son véritable plan?
Vinland Saga, un manga qui tranche
Tout gamin, j’étais fan de médiévaleries. Je rêvais aux légendes de Roland, des Quatre fils Aymon, du roi Arthur et de Lancelot… Je dévorais, en bandes-dessinées, les aventures de Chevalier Ardent (ah, le Prince Noir ! Les Loups de Rougecogne !), de Johan et Pirlouit et bien sûr l’Histoire de France en Bandes Dessinées, avec les chapitres sur les vikings, sur les croisades ou sur Du Guesclin. Montjoie ! Saint Denis ! J’ai pas l’air comme ça, mais les histoires de Durandal ou d’Excalibur me faisaient vibrer comme aucune autre. Aujourd’hui encore, je me suis surpris à jouer aux chevaliers playmobils avec Mackie junior (des fois, c’est vraiment cool d’être papa). Alors forcément, un manga comme Vinland Saga, je ne pouvais pas le louper. J’y ai retrouvé le même cocktail d’évasion, d’héroïsme et de sauvagerie qui rend une telle série si addictive.
Déjà, Vinland Saga se distingue par une intrigue historique solidement documentée. Le thème des vikings n’est pas très nouveau, mais ce qui est original, c’est de le situer dans un épisode clé de l’histoire européenne, peu connu: l’avènement du royaume de Knut le Grand (Canute the Great pour les anglais). La civilisation viking, ses coutumes sont superbement décrits. Mais rien de lourdement didactique : c’est naturellement amené, et seulement quand c’est nécessaire à l’action. Par exemple, dans le 1er tome, l’attaque de la cité franque est un modèle de tactique viking (cf. ci-dessous).
Dans cette première série de huit tomes, le Vinland n’est pas le sujet central. Il est juste évoqué (le Vinland est le nom des terres au-delà des océans, probablement en Amérique, découvertes par Leif Eriksson, personnage secondaire dans l’intrigue) mais il reste mystérieux.
Sur ce fond historique, l’intrigue se développe en suivant l’évolution de plusieurs personnages, aux histoires entremêlées, mais qui suivent chacun leur propre but. Thorfinn est le personnage principal de la saga, et il est clair qu’il le restera au-delà du tome 8. Mais de ces huit premiers tomes, c’est surtout la figure d’Askeladd qui émerge selon moi. Au début mercenaire brutal, cynique et calculateur, seulement motivé par l’argent, on le découvre de plus en plus intéressant au fur et à mesure des évènements. C’est lui qui fait avancer l’action, par ses choix, et ses motivations sont bien plus mystérieuses qu’il n’y paraît au premier abord.
Thorfinn, en revanche, n’évolue que très peu. Après que les raisons de son désir de vengeance aient été présentées, il subit les évènements sans vraiment les influencer, et reste toujours aussi têtu et renfermé. Ses interventions se limitent à des combats, en duel ou au cours de batailles où il se révèle, malgré son jeune âge et sa faible stature, un combattant hors normes. On verra son évolution dans les tomes à venir.
Le changement le plus spectaculaire concerne (attention ! spoiler dans ce paragraphe) le prince Knut, transparent au début, volontaire ensuite ; mais ce changement n’est pas réellement une surprise, car historiquement, il est quand même devenu le roi du Danemark et de l’Angleterre, sous le titre de Knut II le Grand. C’est juste qu’il se produit un peu trop subitement. Quoique, si on remarque bien, le garçon timoré qu’il semble être de prime abord n’est qu’apparence ; son mentor, Ragnar, parle à sa place, et rappelle l’enfer qu’a été sa jeunesse à la Cour du roi, entre complots et rivalités meurtrières. Askeladd, bien plus clairvoyant que les autres personnages (et que le lecteur?) devine très tôt tout le potentiel du prince.
Il est intéressant de noter que l’évolution des personnages s’accompagne d’un enrichissement progressif du dessin, comme si le trait plus fouillé qu’au début accompagnait la complexité croissante de leurs personnalités.
Vinland Saga est un manga également très violent. Et vas-y que ça tranche, que ça gicle, que ça transperce, que ça découpe en steaks les soldats et les civils comme de vulgaires morceaux de viande. Je suis généralement circonspect devant les déchaînements de violence et de cruauté, lorsqu’ils sont gratuits (comme dans certains passages de Zetman, par exemple). Mais ici, on est en pleine guerre, et les vikings n’étaient pas particulièrement des poètes dans le genre. Cela ne m’a donc pas choqué, d’autant qu’une forme de distanciation se produit à travers l’humour noir qui l’accompagne. Quand Thorkell manie ses haches, le délire visuel des morceaux de barbaque qui volent rend l’ensemble plutôt surréel. D’autre part, lorsque des victimes innocentes sont massacrées, cela s’inscrit dans le contexte des horreurs de la guerre. Il n’y a pas là de complaisance, le spectacle de la violence étant présenté comme injustifié et moralement indéfendable (voir le rôle du moine, témoin et commentateur des drames auquel il assiste contre son gré). Et le personnage de Thors, qui a trouvé la voie du « vrai guerrier », incarne l’esprit chevaleresque au milieu de cette bande de tueurs.
Conclusion
Un contexte historique passionnant, auquel j’ai toujours été sensible, une intrigue linéaire mais cohérente, des personnages charismatiques (surtout Askeladd), un dessin (j’en ai peu parlé) clair et fouillé à la fois, voilà qui pose les bases d’une série que l’on annonce longue, et qui promet des développements intéressants. Les huit premiers tomes de Vinland Saga constituent un cycle en soi (euh, je veux dire un arc, c’est plus mieux), qui se lit avec le sentiment d’un premier aboutissement. Bref, de quoi combler le lecteur que je suis. En attendant la suite.

(Ah ! et puis j’ai trouvé le calembour qui m’échappait : « ta critique est facile, mais l’art balaie tes arguments ». Arbalète. Hum. Qui a dit capillotracté?)

A propos du changement brusque de Knut (qui en a décidément choqué plusieurs) je me demande s’il ne faut pas s’efforcer de pénétrer dans la mentalité du personnage, de son rapport à la foi et à l’idée de destinée. Je pense que ce type de grand personnage historique (si ça a une quelconque signficiation) était capable de changer brusquement de psychologie, voire de révéler leur potentiel après un déclencheur particulier. Mais peut-être cette conception est-elle un stéréotype véhiculé par les fictions historiques elles-mêmes…
je n’ai pas été choqué, surpris plutôt, mais n’attend-on pas des rebondissements dans une telle histoire? pour aller dans ton sens, je ferais bien un parallèle avec le Henry V de Shakespeare (monté en film – excellent – par Kenneth Brannagh), qui de jeune prince futile et égoïste devient responsable et courageux quand il se prend le métier de roi en pleine tronche. jusqu’à trahir ses amis de jeunesse, en raison des intérêts supérieurs de l’Etat, et de l’idée qu’il s’en fait.
