L’histoire :
Lorsque Ryôta, leur fils aîné, un garnement effronté, bagarreur et médiocre en classe, leur annonce qu’il veut devenir moine bouddhiste, ses parents tombent des nues. Certes, il accompagnait son père chaque dimanche au temple, et participait même à la séance de méditation zen, malgré son jeune âge ; mais cette vocation subite n’a rien d’une lubie, et Ryôta est confié à l’enseignement rigoureux et austère de la révérende Gukai, l’abbesse du temple, avec l’interdiction de rentrer dans sa famille…
Ce que j’en pense :
Court (144 pages, lu en deux heures), rafraîchissant, touchant et instructif, voilà un joli roman que je recommande à tout le monde. La critique japonaise ne s’y est pas trompée, en lui décernant le prix Akutagawa, un peu l’équivalent du Goncourt (juste pour vous donner une idée de son importance , quelques lauréats : Yasushi Inoué, Kobo Abe, Kenzaburo Oe, Ryu Murakami, et d’autres comme Yoko Ogawa ou Shuichi Yoshida, dont je parlerai prochainement).
Raconté du point de vue du père, ce récit autobiographique est la chronique d’un deuil : celui de l’enfant qui devient adulte et qui quitte le foyer, et d’une renaissance : celle d’un couple qui doit réapprendre à regarder de l’avant. Le fait de devoir couper, d’une façon aussi brutale, le cordon ombilical est une amplification du dilemme que connaît, à des degrés divers, tout parent dont l’enfant grandit. En outre, cette rupture n’est ici pas seulement symbolique, elle est concrète, car Ryôta doit réellement renoncer à ses liens familiaux pour s’engager dans la voie du sacerdoce. Ryôta est, d’ailleurs, assez peu présent dans le récit, en tant que personnage. Ses parents parlent de lui tout le temps, mais le lecteur ne le voit la plupart du temps que par leur intermédiaire. C’est donc moins le récit d’un engagement spirituel qui est raconté, que celui d’une perte, et de la façon dont les parents vont devoir se reconstruire en tant que couple, en faisant le point sur eux-mêmes. Ce thème résonne donc forcément en moi d’échos intimes, puisque je suis père d’un garçon à peine plus jeune que Ryôta ; et je pense que toute personne dans la même situation ne pourra qu’être sensible à ces sujets : l’amour, sa durée, la famille, le couple.
Cette crise du couple et de la parentalité se double dans le roman d’une interrogation sur l’identité et sur la vocation. Qui suis-je? semble se demander en permanence le narrateur, en même temps qu’il se demande qui est vraiment son fils, qu’il croyait connaître. Lui-même revient désabusé de quelques années passées dans une Amérique idéalisée d’après-guerre, et il se tourne vers la méditation zen comme pour y trouver les réponses aux questions qu’il se pose. D’ailleurs, à un moment, il se demande si, en laissant son fils aller vers le zen, il n’agit pas par procuration. De toutes façons, s’il y a une morale à retenir, c’est que le chemin que choisit un homme n’a que peu d’importance, ramenée à l’humanité toute entière.

Enfin, comme son titre le laisse supposer, Je veux devenir moine zen ! est un roman initiatique sur le bouddhisme zen, et le lecteur newbie et occidental que je suis y a trouvé beaucoup d’informations nouvelles, sur la philosophie zen, ses rites, ses pratiques et son histoire.
En résumé, derrière une simplicité seulement apparente, Je veux devenir moine zen ! est une lecture idéale par temps de fatigue et grisaille, abordant avec humour et poésie des sujets graves qui touchent tout le monde, les parents bien sûr, mais aussi et surtout les enfants que nous n’avons jamais cessé d’être. Une vraie cure de jouvence.

Quoiqu’il en soit je te rejoint totalement, malgré son format très light, ce roman est un vrai plaisir que j’ai relu plusieurs fois avec toujours autant plaisir depuis qq années.
Tiens, à cause de toi, j’ai lu ce livre. Ma foi, il est agréable et se lit facilement. J’ai beaucoup aimé la fin.
