A la recherche d’infos et de références pour approfondir ma balbutiante culture du manga et de l’anime, je suis tombé sur ce petit ouvrage qui, vu son prix, deux euros, ne pouvait pas être un mauvais investissement. Voire. Parce que même un newbie comme bibi peut se rendre compte des approximations et des raccourcis, pour ne pas dire des oublis et des erreurs, que contiennent aussi peu de pages.
Cela partait plutôt bien avec une intéressante préface de Jean-Pierre Dionnet, trublion touche-à-tout bien connu de tout amateur de rock, de cinéma et de bande dessinée (aussi loin que je me souvienne, j’ai toujours fini toujours par tomber sur lui, dans chacune de mes découvertes passionnées, depuis les mythiques Enfants du rock avec Philippe Manoeuvre, à Canal plus avec l’émission Cinéma de quartier, en passant par Métal Hurlant – rappelons surtout que c’est à Jean-Pierre Dionnet que l’on doit l’importation de Miyazaki en France, dont il a distribué les films Porco Rosso et Mon Voisin Totoro – fin de digression).
Dionnet rappelle le malentendu dont a longtemps souffert le manga et surtout l’anime en France, à cause des étranges programmations du club Dorothée (doublages calamiteux, génériques des Musclés ou de Bernard Minet, caviardages et censures…). Il réussit en trois pages à résumer avec humour et précision, et un peu de cabotinage, l’apparition du phénomène manga/animation dans l’hexagone, et ne se prive pas de prendre ses distances avec les pages qui vont suivre, comme s’il ne voulait pas réellement s’associer au livre de Jérôme Schmidt, dont il note déjà quelques erreurs. Un comble, pour une préface !
Et de fait, le texte qui suit ne présente qu’un intérêt très limité, et n’intéressera que, que… que qui d’ailleurs? Les parents largués d’enfants fans de mangas, peut-être?
Quelques généralités, une présentation qui ne se situe que côté français (on a de longs paragraphes sur les années Dorothée, puis sur Pokemon, comme si cela avait un quelconque intérêt pour décrire la culture manga japonaise), trois biographies non exemptes d’erreurs (on apprend que Miyazaki est l’auteur de « Conan le détective » ???) et quelques résumés, dont celui d’Evangelion ( les personnages d’Evangelion sont qualifiés « d’obsédés sexuels mal dans leur peau »). Voilà pour l’ouvrage. Seul intérêt relatif : un choix pas trop mal fait d’oeuvres de qualité pour une « bibliothèque et vidéothèque idéales », mais a-t-on besoin de ce livre pour faire son choix?
Le plus gênant, c’est cette impression que l’auteur ne s’intéresse pas réellement à son sujet, et qu’avec une documentation minimale il pourrait écrire de la même manière sur n’importe quoi : « L’architecture militaire en Estonie », « l’Histoire du papier à rouler », « Le phacochère, cet inconnu », ou « Grandeur et décadence du bidet dans l’hôtellerie européenne ». De beaux sujets à développer, pour faire de beaux livres, à deux euros. Ou moins.
En attendant de trouver un livre intéressant sur le sujet, je ne peux que me rabattre sur – et vous conseiller – l’excellente synthèse de Shinmanga, Histoire du manga, et c’est ici. Dans une autre approche, il y a aussi l’encyclopédie d’Animint.

Oh je l’ai ce bouquin ! Et effectivement, y a pas grand chose dedans même si à l’époque je n’avais pas relevé d’incohérences.
Par contre, j’avais acheté à peu près à la même époque l’AnimeLand hors série n°5 qui est bourré d’informations et propose un guide hyper complet (auteur, anime, mythologie asiatique, détails techniques, histoire de l’animation japonaise en France ET au Japon).
Et franchement entre ces 2 bouquins, y a pas photo !
Belle couv avec Rei… J’essaierai de voir s’il est dispo en occase… merci de l’info !
Au fait rien à voir : bien aimé ton article sur les Tsundere. C’est amusant et je suis plutôt d’accord ^^.
Le HS 5 d’Animeland va de pair avec le HS 10 qui complète avec l’histoire des principaux studios pour les anime et présente aussi d’autres biographies de mangakas. Cela date de 2006 donc pas encore d’A1 Pictures mais Bones et Gonzo sont traités.
Il y a des vidéos sur le site Manga-News TV consacrées aux « Secrets du Manga ». Vu leur longueur, il s’agit plus de petites synthèses que de reportages développés, mais je pense qu’il n’y aura pas autant d’erreurs. Je crois qu’elles ont été diffusées sur Arte. On m’a soufflé le titre « Manga, 60 ans de BD japonaise », de Paul Gravett, comme référence pour l’histoire du manga
Bien sûr, il est loin d’être à 2€. Cependant, il reste un peu au-dessous de 25€. Mais on le trouve d’occasion à 15€ (frais d’envoi compris), sur Priceminister.
