Dans ce récit autobiographique, Kentaro Ueno, mangaka publié par Comic Beam, raconte sans fausse pudeur la mort de sa femme, victime d’une crise cardiaque, puis les premiers jours qui ont suivi le décès, les formalités administratives, la cérémonie funéraire, la crémation, la vie après… Et surtout l’infinie tristesse qui se cache derrière la dignité et l’ardeur d’un homme au travail. Homme qui est aussi un père, d’une petite fille qui semble curieusement s’effacer derrière le deuil. L’histoire est dessinée avec un mélange de réalisme et d’onirisme, les objets du quotidien (le frigo, le lit, les photos, le désordre…) se parant d’une aura mystérieuse, tous chargés du souvenir de celle qui les avait tenus, manipulés, regardés… Jusqu’aux films qui passent à la télé, ou aux DVD loués qu’il faut rendre, évoquent eux aussi la perte…
C’est un livre de deuil, rien d’autre, et qui s’assume comme tel. Un manga dont le projet a germé dans la tête de Kentaro Ueno dès les premiers jours d’après, empli de questions souvent sans réponse (pourquoi? pourquoi elle? où est-elle à présent?), la seule qui reçoit une réponse étant : que faire? Et bien, dessiner. Car si les mots sont parfois maladroits, le mangaka sait utiliser sa planche pour exprimer et partager ce qu’il ressent. Cela donne des résultats surprenants, quelquefois fulgurants, parfois inspirés du peintre surréaliste Magritte (à plusieurs reprises), et que dire de cette planche hommage où Kentaro Ueno mêle ses larmes à celles qui coulent des yeux des personnages de Devilman (Go Nagai), Terre de rêves (Jiro Taniguchi), ou Gen d’Hiroshima (Keiji Nakazawa).
A qui recommander une telle lecture? Difficile à dire. Il y a beaucoup de modestie et d’humanité dans le traitement, alors je serais tenté de dire « à tout le monde » . Mais avec un tel sujet, abordé si frontalement, tout dépend de la sensibilité de chacun. En tous cas, si vous avez apprécié des oeuvres intimes telles que Journal d’une disparition, Undercurrent ou Une longue route, je crois que vous ne resterez pas insensibles à cet au revoir, qui n’aura pas été dit.
