Tokyo, aujourd’hui. Le narrateur travaille pour une maison d’édition, et en proie au spleen, il emménage avec sa femme dans une vieille maison de banlieue. La trentaine dépassée tous les deux, ils n’ont pas d’enfants. Leur nouveau logis est un pavillon traditionnel, au milieu d’un jardin « dans le style de Kyoto, avec ses massifs taillés en boule« , correspondant à « l’image qu’on se fait du lieu de travail idéal pour un écrivain, trop parfait, comme dans les gravures d’autrefois« .
Prenant du recul par rapport à sa profession de rédacteur, il se consacre à un projet personnel d’écriture. Mais un évènement inattendu, en apparence insignifiant, va tout bouleverser : l’irruption d’un chat, venu du voisinage, dans le quotidien un peu morne de ce couple si discret et réservé. Gracieux, curieux, effronté, ce petit chat qui ne leur appartient pas est comme un esprit de la nature, en quelque sorte le Yōkai de ce jardin éphémère. Il va très vite jouer un rôle central dans la vie du couple, et y laisser une empreinte indélébile.
Ce que j’en pense
A première vue, il ne se passe rien d’important dans ce court roman (à peine 130 pages), que j’ai lu d’une traite, profitant de mes récentes vacances. Il faut, je crois, avoir l’esprit reposé, disponible, pour en saisir tout le sel et la poésie. Sinon, il est possible de passer à côté, sans apprécier pleinement la lenteur, la mélancolie et le caractère contemplatif de ce poème en prose.
Parce qu’à y regarder de plus près, beaucoup de sujets sont abordés dans ce texte. Et il serait à mon avis réducteur d’affirmer que cette histoire se résume à l’observation, par un écrivain-narrateur, d’un petit chat dans un jardin. Oui, c’est vrai, les descriptions de Chibi, ce petit être charmant, sont pleines de poésie, et retranscrites dans un style graphique et évocateur. Et oui aussi, le spleen d’un couple trentenaire sans enfant n’est pas un sujet très accrocheur. Mais il ne faut pas s’arrêter là.
Entre les lignes, le narrateur aborde des sujets graves et universels : la disparition des proches (phénomène qui se répète à l’approche de l’âge), la signification que l’on donne à son existence à travers les choix que l’on fait, la place de l’homme dans la nature, les relations avec autrui… Le narrateur aborde également des sujets plus contemporains, et plus circonstanciés : la difficulté à vivre dans une mégalopole, les prix de l’immobilier, les problèmes d’argent et d’héritage, le traitement social de la vieillesse dans la société japonaise… Chibi, au milieu de tant de questions, propose sans le vouloir des réponses simples, et sert de médiateur entre l’homme, la nature (incarnée par le jardin) et le voisinage. Par sa présence, mais aussi son absence, il déclenche les réactions, interroge les sentiments, invite à l’observation, donc à la méditation. « Pour moi, Chibi est ami qui me comprend, un ami qui a l’apparence d’un chat« .
Malgré cela, je peux admettre que certains trouveront ce livre trop lent, avec l’accent qui est mis (surtout au début) sur les descriptions de la nature. Le chat, le jardin, l’arbre centenaire, la libellule… personnellement, cela m’a enchanté. Je trouve que ce livre est écrit avec une grande délicatesse. Derrière le romancier se profile le poète : « Le jour pointait, Chibi poursuivait ses jeux dans le jardin, le dos parsemé de pétales de prunier, happant une abeille, reniflant un lézard, ce jardin qui pressentait la vie et le chaos« . Et se profile également le philosophe : lorsque le narrateur réfléchit sur ses relations avec Chibi (en passant une bonne partie de sa petite vie dans sa maison, le chat lui appartient-il?), il en vient à transposer ce questionnement au processus de création littéraire, et au pouvoir de l’écriture : « Mais tout de même, écrire ne constitue nullement une appropriation. L’écriture elle aussi franchit indistinctement les limites de la possession. En poussant l’écriture jusqu’à la limite de l’exprimable, ne serait-il pas possible de purifier ce qui flotte toujours entre les voisins et nous, levant les barrières l’une après l’autre?«
Le chat qui venait du ciel, premier roman d’Hiraide Takashi, surtout connu au Japon comme poète, possède bien plus de qualités que ne laisserait penser une lecture distraite. Derrière son apparence de légèreté, les questions qu’il pose avec pudeur et gravité, mais non sans humour, ont eu sur moi l’effet d’un euphorisant, d’une cure de prozac, d’un séjour à la campagne, d’une pause dans notre trépidant rythme de citadins. Si d’autres livres ont cet effet, je veux bien que vous m’en communiquez les titres : je suis preneur.
