L’histoire
Le Ministère des Affaires Etrangères du Japon est au bord de la crise de nerfs. En effet, le vice-président des Etats-Unis, en tournée en extrême-orient, emmène à sa suite sa très charmante fille, Catherine Turner, qui s’est entichée d’Ikebana, l’art japonais de la composition florale, et qui a décidé de suivre l’enseignement d’une des grandes écoles de cet art traditionnel. Or, ces écoles très prestigieuses se détestent cordialement, et Miss Turner n’a pas encore décidé à laquelle elle allait s’inscrire… Pour éviter les incidents diplomatiques, le Ministre missionne son propre neveu, Ichiro, comme garde du corps officieux. Avec deux mots d’ordres : pas d’impairs, ni de romance ! Friande de potins, la presse s’intéresse bien plus à la jeune fille qu’à son papa vice-président…
Bien sûr, si tout se passait comme prévu, ce ne serait pas drôle et il n’y aurait pas d’histoire. Aussi, quand on retrouve, devant le temple de Kiyomizu, le corps assassiné d’une jeune professeur d’Ikebana que Miss Turner avait finalement décidé de rencontrer, c’est le début d’une enquête difficile pour la police de Kyoto. Surtout que, bien entendu, Miss Turner et Ichiro ont décidé d’élucider eux-mêmes le mystère…
Ce que j’en pense
Poursuivant ma découverte du roman nippon, c’est chez un bouquiniste que je suis tombé par hasard sur ce livre de Misa Yamamura(1934-1996), très célèbre au Japon pour ses nombreux romans policiers dans le style d’Agatha Christie. De fait, bien que Des cercueils trop fleuris se situe dans le Japon moderne, j’ai bien retrouvé l’atmosphère désuète des romans policiers à l’ancienne, et pour être franc, ça ma autant amusé qu’agacé.
Des meurtres en série dans la belle ville de Kyoto, voilà qui est attirant pour l’amateur de polars que je suis. Là où je déchante un peu, c’est que madame Yamamura s’intéresse bien plus aux mystères qu’aux personnages, et qu’elle imagine des meurtres en chambre close de façon assez artificielle, sans beaucoup de vraisemblance, comme s’il s’agissait d’un simple jeu. D’ailleurs, plusieurs intrigues de madame Yamamura sont adaptées en jeux vidéo, pour PSP ou DS, sous le titre : Misa Yamamura Suspense : Kyoto Murder Files (Tecmo). Pour ce que j’en ai vu, les captures d’écran de ces jeux sont très décoratives, et présentent des belles photos de sites connus de la ville de Kyoto (du coup, je vous en mets quelques-une en illustration pour le reste du billet).
Décoratif, c’est également un terme qui me semble adapté à Des cercueils trop fleuris. Au-delà de l’intrigue, un peu naïve je trouve, il y a tout de même des points agréables : tout d’abord, le roman a quelque chose d’un guide touristique des principaux monuments de Kyoto, comme le temple de Kiyomizu, ou le château de Nijo-Jo. Ensuite, et surtout, le roman propose une plongée dans le milieu méconnu de l’ikebana, qui loin d’être aussi harmonieux que les bouquets de fleurs dont il est question, s’avère un secteur lucratif et concurrentiel, où s’exacerbent les rivalités entre grandes écoles. Cet aspect du roman est assez amusant, jouant le contraste entre la pureté des compositions florales sophistiquées et la bassesse des intérêts en jeu, qui vont jusqu’au meurtre. On a droit aussi à des explications instructives sur l’importance de l’ikebana dans la culture traditionnelle nippone, ainsi que sur les techniques et la philosophie de l’art floral, y compris les différentes tendances (traditionnelle, moderniste, etc…)
Finalement, la lecture des Cercueils trop fleuris ne me laissera pas un souvenir impérissable, en raison d’une intrigue peu palpitante et d’une relative absence de suspense. Si comme moi, vous êtes amateur de polars noirs, de thrillers et d’enquêtes réalistes, passez votre chemin. En revanche, si vous aimez les detective novels à l’ancienne, avec romance et mystères alambiqués, mais pas trop prise de tête, vous pourrez passer un bon moment à sa lecture.
