Dog Afternoon : une guerre de succession entre deux clans de yakuzas tourne au jeu de massacre, à cause de la folie d’un groupe de mavericks suicidaires, le tout sous le regard cynique d’un inspecteur aux méthodes radicales. Les Lolitas sont là : pas de nymphettes kawai par ici, mais des motards abrutis qui provoquent un enchainement de catastrophes dans un parc d’attraction. La Garde du Sultan : les services secrets confient aux quatre flics les moins bien notés de l’archipel, la sécurité rapprochée du dictateur d’un état du Golfe, en visite officielle au Japon, dans le secret espoir qu’il se fera assassiner par ses opposants. Mais ce sera encore pire que prévu.

Publicité mensongère
Quand un éditeur comme Kana, émanation du poids lourd Dargaud/Lombard, lance une campagne de communication presse, j’ai la faiblesse d’imaginer que c’est concerté, à tout le moins que c’est fait consciemment. Que je vous rafraîchisse la mémoire : courant 2011, Kana annonce fièrement : « Comme vous l’avez vu sur notre facebook, en octobre, nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir dans notre catalogue quatre one-shot réalisés par quatre grands maîtres du manga : Katsuhiro Otomo, Toshio Suzuki, Osamu Tezuka et Naoki Urazawa ! Rien que ça » ! De fait, nous eûmes effectivement droit aux parutions de deux livres d’entretiens (pas one-shots, notez) de Suzuki et de Tezuka, ainsi qu’à un recueil d’histoires courtes d’Urazawa, mais s’agissant du one-shot annoncé de Katsuhiro Otomo, c’est une autre histoire. Le volume en question est cette Garde du Sultan, présenté avec un léger amendement sur le site de l’éditeur : un « Recueil de 3 histoires courtes écrites par Katsuhiro Otomo et dessinées par Akihiko Takadera » . Ce n’est déjà plus un one-shot DE Otomo, mais un recueil d’histoires écrites par Otomo. Pas grave, tout le monde a déjà repris plusieurs fois la fausse information. Et l’ambiguïté est maintenue jusqu’à ce que le lecteur aie l’objet entre les mains : regardez bien en haut à droite : les mots « dessin » et « scénario » sont décalés par rapport au nom d’Otomo, de manière à ce qu’un acheteur inattentif pense qu’il s’agit bien d’une oeuvre du maître. Pas de notice biographique ni de quatrième de couv’. Ce n’est finalement qu’au beau milieu du volume, entre deux histoires, qu’un mot du dessinateur confirme ce que seul l’oeil exercé a décelé : la Garde du Sultan est un recueil d’un illustre inconnu, dont une seule histoire sur trois est basée sur un scénario d’Otomo.
A comparer avec le slogan initial de Kana : « Retrouvez tous les ingrédients qui ont fait le succès d’Akira dans ces trois récits écrits par le maître » … Je vous laisse conclure vous-mêmes.
Et finalement, c’est bien ou pas?
Si le lecteur surmonte la désagréable impression de s’être fait prendre pour un couillon, il reste toutefois possible de s’intéresser au livre lui-même. Bah oui quoi : je ne vais quand même pas demander le remboursement de mes 3€50 (!) au stand d’occase à l’Epitanime où je l’ai acheté (j’ai cela dit été tenté de l’acheter neuf), et puis si ça se trouve, c’est peut-être un excellent manga. Peut-être. Suspense.
A la base, c’est un bel objet. Grand format, couverture cartonnée élégante, papier glacé de qualité, le livre pèse son poids dans les mains. Peu de pages couleurs, à part une ou deux et les pages de garde des trois histoires. Le dessin rappelle assez fortement Otomo, c’est peu de le dire, et c’est là qu’il convient de se pencher sur la bio du mangaka. Enfin, quand je dis « bio », pour le peu que j’ai pu trouver, car Akihiko Takadera est inconnu au bataillon d’Animenewsnetwork, de Wiki et de Manga News, par exemple. A croire que ce volume serait son seul et unique titre publié. Tu parles d’un évènement éditorial. Mais je ne vais pas encore revenir dessus. Bref, l’auteur a été assistant d’Otomo sur Kibun wa mo Senso, et s’est vu proposer de réaliser des récits courts pour Young Magazine (Le mag d’Akira et GITS, tout de même). Avec tout cela j’ai oublié d’évoquer l’autre signature des scénarios : Haruka Takachiho, scénariste et auteur de science-fiction, co-fondateur du Studio Nue (Macross, Yamato…) et auteur des séries Crusher Joe et Dirty Pair.
Bien que différents en apparence, les trois récits doivent s’analyser comme une trilogie policière, puisqu’ils reprennent un personnage récurrent, un inspecteur de la criminelle cynique et calculateur, dont les méthodes brutales lui font atteindre ses objectifs sans tenir compte des victimes collatérales. Dog Afternoon (référence à Sidney Lumet?) est une sorte de… Reservoir Dogs, qui commence comme une classique partie d’échecs entre Yakuzas rivaux, avant de dégénérer en bataille sanglante avec l’intervention de dingues de la gachette qui se rêvent un destin de kamikaze. J’ai trouvé le début du récit assez abscons, avant de vraiment démarrer avec les scènes d’action, un peu fouillis mais tout de même prenantes. Un des points positifs est l’humour noir, qui transparaît dans l’hénaurmité du final, conclu sans morale ni perspective.
Le second récit, Les Lolitas sont là, est un peu la redite du premier, sur le mode burlesque : à la place de yakuzas, on a des motards, mais qui roulent sur des mobs pourries et trafiquées, errant entre les combinis et les patchinkos. Le point de départ est rigolo : un chef de gang rameute ses affidés pour leur révéler… qu’il arrête les conneries et reprend ses études. Orphelins, trois des motards les plus crétins décident de reprendre seuls le flambeau… Ce qui déclenche une avalanche dévastatrice qui ressemble un peu à la fin des Blues Brothers. Mais pour pas grand-chose : l’histoire tourne à vide.
Le troisième récit, qui donne son titre au volume, est une sorte de synthèse des deux premiers, parodiant une intrigue policière aux accents réalistes jusqu’à la faire complètement dérailler, sorte de Police Academy nippon, dont les héros sont un taré de la gachette, un obsédé sexuel et un tire-au-flanc.
Finalement, sans briller par une quelconque originalité, au moins deux des trois récits possèdent assez de rythme et de ressources visuelles pour mettre en valeur des histoires policières déjantées, et j’ai trouvé cela plutôt plaisant. Ça se laisse lire agréablement, et j’aime bien le côté vintage du design général. Ça fourmille aussi de détails amusants, les poursuites de voiture et les fusillades survenant en pleines scènes de vie urbaine quotidienne, notamment dans une manifestation politique opposant nationalistes et partisans de l’abolition de l’Empire. Mais tout cela valait-il de faire des annonces claironnantes comme a osé le faire Kana? Et même, honnêtement : la parution était-elle seulement justifiée? Car bien que j’aie trouvé cette lecture sympathique, je ne suis pas sûr que l’histoire du manga s’en soit trouvée changée.

Pour Haruka Takachiho, c’est à la base un assistant d’Otomo, donc logique pour la ressemblance de style relévée. Par contre, sur sa page wiki jp, y’a pas grand chose de référencé niveau oeuvres (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/高寺彰彦) et plus rien du tout depuis 1996.
