Petit à petit, les langues se délient. Les histoires des autres pensionnaires font froid dans le dos : à les en croire, meurtres, disparitions, visions fantomatiques et sombres machinations se succèdent sur cette île inquiétante… Pour survivre, les enfants n’ont qu’un seul mot d’ordre : ne se fier aux adultes sous aucun prétexte. Ce que j’en pense :
Avec le quatrième tome, paru ces jours-ci, s’achève la série l’Île de Hozuki, débutée en février 2010. Globalement, j’en ai plutôt apprécié la lecture, mais en détail, si j’ai trouvé le premier tome excellent, les trois autres m’ont nettement moins plu. Je m’explique.

Le premier tome rassemble beaucoup de qualités, et j’ai été vraiment interpelé par les nombreuses questions qu’il soulève.

En premier lieu, l’atmosphère est bien rendue. Les décors sont oppressants, la nature est particulièrement bien dessinée, avec certaines images à la manière des maîtres d’autrefois, tels Hokusai. L’idée de situer l’histoire dans une île déserte n’est certes pas nouvelle, mais elle est mise au goût du jour par la présence de vestiges industriels et militaires japonais de la 2ème guerre mondiale ; ce qui ouvre des possibilités intéressantes de développement du scénario. Encore récemment, Shutter Island montrait ce qu’on pouvait faire de neuf et d’angoissant avec une île déserte.

Ensuite, de nombreuses situations empruntent au vocabulaire spécifique de l’angoisse et de l’horreur : les planchers qui grincent, les portes condamnées, les graffitis appelant à l’aide, les traces de sang, les disparitions inexpliquées, les spectres blafards, les psychopathes à la machette…

Enfin, ce volume multiplie les pistes possibles, de la mine d’or cachée à l’arnaque à l’assurance-vie, en passant par le meurtrier psychopathe, les expériences secrètes ou le réseau pédophile…

Bref, un premier volume accrocheur, qui multiplie les pistes, fait monter la tension, fait travailler l’imagination, fait naître les hypothèses les plus folles dans l’esprit du lecteur. En le refermant, j’étais impatient de connaître la suite…

Et j’ai été d’autant plus déçu dès le deuxième tome. A l’atmosphère fantastique et étouffante, qui me rappelait Ring ou the Shining, succède une course-poursuite m’évoquant vaguement Lost ou Battle Royale. Alors que j’étais resté sur l’impression que de nouvelles découvertes allaient apporter des révélations sur le pourquoi du comment, voilà que débute une partie de cache-cache, certes dangereuse, mais où l’intrigue ne progresse plus. A la place, s’instaure un suspense purement mécanique sur le fait de savoir qui, des enfants et des professeurs, arriveront en premier au débarcadère. Tout ce qu’on pouvait entrevoir reste en stand by, pour laisser place à une simple suite de péripéties – qui se développe quasiment à l’identique dans le troisième tome. Alors, oui, les scènes d’action sont assez efficaces, mais il n’y a plus que ça. Le message est clair : la fin approche, on vous fait patienter, tournez les pages le plus vite possible, et vous saurez. On saura quoi? Que tout n’était qu’illusion? Prétexte? Faux semblant? Mais à quoi bon?

Au quatrième tome, aucune des pistes évoquées ne se réalise, ou presque. Mais pour que cela fonctionne, encore aurait-il fallu laisser croître le suspense jusqu’à un climax, qui était déjà atteint dès le premier tome… N’est pas Hitchcock qui veut…

C’est la mode de tromper le lecteur/spectateur. Depuis le grand succès de films comme Le 6ème Sens, The Village, ou Usual Suspects, c’est même devenu un genre à part entière : le twist final (euh, non, ce n’est pas une danse). Certains appellent ça le mindfuck. Ce n’est même pas nouveau. Ne pas se fier à ce que l’on voit, aller au-delà des apparences, c’est le principe de nombreuses histoires, du genre thriller, et des cinéastes comme Hitchcock ou De Palma s’en étaient fait une spécialité. Je dois admettre que, bon public, je suis assez fan des histoires à rebondissements, et j’aime bien être mené en bateau.

L’Île de Hozuki se revendique du genre. Tant mieux. Mais à trop vouloir brouiller les pistes, à multiplier les faux indices et les effets d’annonce, on frôle la tromperie sur la marchandise. En effet, à la parution du premier tome, on nous annonce de façon tonitruante : « un bijou horrifique » (cf. le site de Ki-Oon). Et tous les signaux sont au rouge, pour séduire les amateurs du genre : un cadre, des décors, une atmosphère, des personnages, des indices, le vocabulaire employé, même. Et au final, un happy end, précédé d’une longue explication façon Agatha Christie. « Tu comprends, quand il a dit ça, c’est parce que, et quand il a fait ça, etc« …

D’un certain point de vue, on peut dire que l’auteur réussit son coup : nous surprendre. Mais a-t-on eu le seinen d’horreur annoncé? Le suspense de « survival horror » vanté par les plaquettes de pub et les résumés de jaquette? Pourquoi adopter une imagerie (les couvertures avec silhouettes spectrales sur fond noir) qui évoque l’horreur ou le fantastique, pour retomber de cette façon? Ce n’est même plus un twist final, c’est un changement de genre en cours de route. Et, je le dis, pour moi une vraie déception.

Vous allez me trouver sévère. C’est peut-être vrai. Je suis probablement trop sévère. Mais cette sévérité est à la hauteur des espérances que j’avais placées dans la lecture du premier tome de l’Île de Hozuki. Série qui, je le dis aussi une fois de plus, est, globalement, une série intéressante. Sinon, je ne l’aurai pas lue en entier, et je n’aurai pas tant écrit à son sujet. Et pour le plaisir du premier tome, qui restera pour moi comme une sorte de one-shot réussi, je dis, malgré tout, merci à l’auteur. Qui aime bien châtie bien.

    Ce n’est pas que est trop sévère ou pas mais plutôt que tu es déçu. Au vue du dernier tome, je comprends totalement car tu as l’impression que tu as été baladé :) Après pour les 2ème et 3ème, c’est à l’appréciation de chacun. Personnellement, j’ai apprécié le fait de voir plusieurs inspirations différentes.

    Que le tome 4 nous ait surpris dans le mauvais sens, c’est presque indéniable et c’est surtout ce que je retiens du manga car, comme tu le dis, à trop vouloir surprendre le lecteur, on finit souvent par perdre l’idée d’origine :)

    Je suis tout à fait d’accord et je comprends bien ce qui t’a blasé dans ce manga. J’ai trouvé que l’auteur s’est un peu planté en développant une course-poursuite qui perd en intensité au fil des pages et surtout que globalement l’oeuvre manquait de réalisme. Parce qu’une école avec des profs qui ont ce genre de comportement à l’égard des gosses, j’ai jamais vu. L’auteur a beau dire que c’est la façon dont les enfants voient les adultes qui est mise en scène mais je trouve ça un peu difficile à concevoir.

    Il y a de bonnes idées mais ça restera pas forcément dans les annales. Et la chute archi-prévisible tombe comme un cheveux dans la soupe.

      Pareil… Mais je sauve tout de même le premier volume, aussi invraisemblable soit-il, pour les pistes qu’il laissait entrevoir, et qui n’ont pas été exploitées. Peut-être un remake des trois suivants (résumés en un seul?) pourrait valoir le coup? mais attention, je ne sais pas dessiner, moi, hein !
