L’histoire :
Vers 1830-1840, la fin de l’époque du shogunat d’Edo. Loin de la capitale où les seigneurs intriguent, le petit peuple souffre quotidiennement de la misère, et de l’insécurité que font régner des bandes de yakusas ou de ronins sans foi ni loi. Dans cet univers violent et désespéré, Ichi va de village en village, pour exercer son métier de masseur. Ichi est un un zato, soit un aveugle de la plus basse catégorie. C’est aussi un ancien yakuza, qui dissimule une épée dans sa canne. Témoin de la violence qui s’abat sur les villageois, et parfois rattrapé par son passé, il doit dégainer plus souvent qu’il ne le souhaiterait… Redoutable, sa technique de combat s’apparente au Iaijutsu (dégainer et sabrer en seul un mouvement), très efficace en cas d’assaillants multiples. Souvent il joue de son handicap pour tromper l’adversaire. Héros improbable, justicier malgré lui, hors-la-loi truculent, rebelle sans cause… Ichi est tout cela, et c’est pour cela qu’il fascine.
Zatoichi Monogatari
Ce que j’en pense :
Avec sa belle couverture zébrée de rouge sang, Zatoichi est un one-shot qui attire le regard. On a à l’esprit le film de Takeshi Kitano, or le père de Zatoichi est Shintaro Katsu (affiche à droite), l’acteur qui l’incarna tant de fois à l’écran. Inspiré par une nouvelle de l’écrivain Kan Shimozawa, il décide de donner vie au personnage et de monter un premier film à faible budget en 1962, Zatoichi Monogatori, réalisé par Kenji Misumi. Vu le succès, d’autres films suivront (25 au total, plus une série de 100 épisodes!), avec divers réalisateurs mais toujours avec Shintaro Katsu dans le rôle d’Ichi. L’acteur (qui a également produit la série Baby Cart, d’après Lone Wolf and Cub) réalisera lui-même un dernier film en 1989. Après sa mort en 1997, deux projets ont vu le jour : le film de Takeshi Kitano, Zatoichi (2003), et un drama de la Toho : Zatoichi the last (2010). 
C’est pour profiter de la popularité des films qu’en 1966, le magazine Shonen King a demandé à un jeune Hiroshi Hirata de dessiner une histoire de Zatoichi. Il y en aura en fait deux, la Ballade de Zatoichi et Zatoichi traverse la mer, adapatées des 13ème et 14ème films de la série. D’abord réticent, Hirata profita finalement du succès de cette oeuvre de commande pour asseoir sa notoriété de gekigaka, et s’affirmer comme un des meilleurs spécialistes du gekiga de sabre. Il faut avoir connaissance de ce contexte pour bien apprécier le résultat : le Zatoichi de Hirata est daté, parfois fulgurant (les combats), souvent maladroit (les rares dessins représentant des femmes ou des enfants). Le trait est brut, dépouillé, nerveux, comme calligraphié. 
On est encore loin de l’hyperréalisme et du sens du détail historique dont il fera preuve dans Satsuma, par exemple. Mais j’ai apprécié certains passages pour leur simplicité, justement, ressemblant parfois aux croquis de Hokusai (la silhouette de l’aveugle, courbé sur sa canne, marchant sur un pont ou un chemin de forêt…). Le récit, lui, est d’un classicisme absolu : le vagabond arrive dans un village sous la coupe de vilains yakusas, il les affronte, prend des coups et finalement leur règle leur compte, sauvant ainsi la veuve et l’orphelin, avant de partir dans le soleil couchant.
En conclusion : un intéressant one-shot pour la culture générale. Je recommande sa lecture surtout à ceux qui souhaiteront approfondir leur connaissance de l’oeuvre de Hirata.
