Cette semaine, cela fera deux ans depuis le 11 mars 2011. Cette date, on commence à l’écrire 311, comme le 911 désigne le 11 septembre 2001. Ce parallèle, Hideo Furukawa le remarque à l’occasion d’un voyage à New York, un mois après le séisme – voyage programmé de longue date, et auquel il ne peut se dérober – lorsqu’il vient se recueillir devant Ground Zero. Mais face à la bannière étoilée, il relativise aussitôt : 911 est né de la haine, et a déclenché une guerre. D’ailleurs, autre coïncidence, pile au moment où il écrit son livre, le 2 mai 2011, Oussama Ben Laden est tué par les services américains. Hideo Furukawa tire la conclusion logique de son périple littéraire :
Que pouvons nous faire?
Nous n’avons personne à haïr.
Alors, là est notre seul espoir.
Nous n’avons qu’à marcher.
Marcher sans penser à la vengeance.
Je m’aperçois que je commence ma chronique par la fin du livre. Ce n’est pas très sérieux. Le livre se termine réellement par les mots :
Mon texte se termine ici, et commence.
Mais quel texte? Ô chevaux est le second livre de Hideo Furukawa édité en France, chez Philippe Picquier. Seulement le second ai-je envie de dire, car dans le sillage d’un Haruki Murakami, à qui il est souvent comparé, il rafle les prix littéraires ou les nominations au Japon (grand prix de la science-fiction pour Arabia ne Yoru no syuzoku, prix Mishima pour Rabu, prix Aoki pour Alors Belka, tu n’aboies plus…). L’année dernière, c’est justement Belka qui nous l’a fait découvrir en France, roman ô combien novateur, difficile et passionnant. Son nouveau livre, avec son long titre en forme de strophe de poème, Ô chevaux, la lumière est pourtant innocente, n’est pas un roman. C’est une parenthèse, un morceau de temps suspendu, coincé dans ce que l’auteur appelle le kamikakushi, « l’enlèvement par les dieux ». Le kamikakushi, c’est une notion intraduisible très présente dans les contes, qui évoque à la fois le temps suspendu, et la disparition des enfants. Alors que vient de se produire le séisme, et que les nouvelles de l’accident nucléaire de Fukushima se répandent, Hideo Furukawa est à Kyoto, loin de chez lui. Chez lui, c’est à Fukushima, là où il est né. L’écrivain ressent un double choc : celui de ne pas être là, donc d’y avoir échappé, et celui de ne plus pouvoir écrire. Il est dans le kamikakushi, dans le temps irréel.
Il s’aperçoit que depuis des années, pas une seule journée ne s’est passée sans qu’il écrive. Et là, plus rien. Impossible d’écrire. Il annule les travaux qu’il avait commencés. Pense tout abandonner. À quoi bon continuer à écrire des romans, puisque jamais ils ne pourront exprimer le traumatisme? Comment simplement décrire ce qui s’est passé? C’est dans cet état de sidération qu’il entend un appel. Dans une librairie, une lycéenne vient le voir et lui dit : « je viens de Soma. » Après un instant d’hésitation, l’écrivain s’entend répondre : « je veux aller à Soma. Je veux voir. » Alors la jeune fille reprend, aussi vite : « Venez voir. »

Soma, district de Fukushima, 45 kilomètres de la centrale. Zone irradiée. Soma, ville des chevaux, ville d’un passé riche et prestigieux, ville du clan Soma, un des clans les plus anciens de l’histoire féodale. Hideo Furukawa, qui en est originaire, y trouve aussi l’écho d’un des ses anciens romans, La sainte famille, qui décrit une expérience de kamikakushi (un grand frère perd son petit frère de façon presque surnaturelle). En allant là-bas, à Soma, lieu dévasté de sa naissance, lieu d’histoire et source son inspiration, Hideo Furukawa va chercher à renouer le fil rompu du temps.
Le livre qui en résulte est déroutant, brut, changeant complètement d’angle ou de style d’un paragraphe à l’autre. Descriptions cliniques, hallucinations, explications détaillées, dialogues intérieurs, l’écrit est parfois à la limite de l’oral, et ne suit aucune chronologie apparente : flashes-backs, apartés et sauts en avant déstructurent le récit pour le laisser tel que des décombres, celles que l’écrivain trouve sur les côtes défigurées par le tsunami. Je ne paraphraserai pas les descriptions qu’Hideo Furukawa livre des paysages qu’il traverse, mais c’est à la fin du livre que le paysage nous apparaît dans sa globalité, avec son effarante réalité.

Et les chevaux? Les chevaux, sont comme les chiens dans Belka : dépositaires d’un savoir immémorial, remontant aux origines du Japon, et même avant, détenteurs d’une sagesse universelle que les hommes ont perdue, et en même temps tellement fragiles, perdus sans l’homme qui les nourrit. C’est à Soma que l’écrivain rencontre les chevaux, sous une pluie invisible de particules irradiées, il les trouve abandonnés, et tente de les consoler, dans un geste aussi spontané que maladroit et absurde. Ô chevaux…
(Soma est le lieu d’un festival historique où le cheval tient un rôle central, dont l’origine remonte au 10ème siècle. Ce festival a de nouveau eu lieu après le 11 mars. La photo ci-dessus a été prise en 2012.)
Et c’est le livre refermé (150 pages, il faut s’y accrocher, c’est essentiel), qu’apparaît le tracé du chemin parcouru. Le kamikakushi se referme sur ses hallucinations : les frères imaginaires du roman la Sainte famille, les grandes figures de l’histoire Nobunaga et Hideyoshi, les Beatles… Restent, sur la carte, les cercles concentriques des zones irradiées, les débris pas encore ramassés au bord des côtes, et les vrais gens. L’écrivain a retrouvé sa voix.

Je me souviens que Hideo Furukawa est un des auteurs qui m’a marqué au salon du livre l’an passé. Je ne connaissais pas vraiment cet auteur à ce moment là mais j’ai lu plusieurs interviews de lui qui étaient justement sorties au moment du salon.
C’était pour lui une grosse remise en question en tant qu’écrivain : « comment écrire après ça ? que dire ? » C’était vraiment le gros point de ce salon du livre que l’on retrouvait aussi chez d’autres auteurs. Et j’ai trouvé ça vraiment fort.
J’ai apprécia sa sincérité et sa façon d’aborder les choses. Et plus que sur ses capacités d’écrivain, c’était aussi une remise en question de la nature humaine, du système japonais dans son ensemble. La vie semble avoir repris son cours normal alors que pour lui il y a vraiment un avant et un après.
