The Beatles – Revolver
Emi/Parlophone, 1966
Je prétends que Revolver est le meilleur album des Beatles, et je pourrais évoquer des raisons strictement personnelles, du genre ce fut mon premier 33 tours de pop à moi quand j’avais pas 8 ans, etc, ce qui est vrai mais passons. L’histoire, les critiques et les fans retiennent avec une belle unanimité d’autres albums : le Double Blanc, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, ou Abbey Road, mais ma conviction est faite, malgré tout : c’est Revolver. Pourquoi ? Cela commence par la contemplation de la pochette (je l’ai toujours, le 33 tours), leur plus belle, ce design incroyable d’innovation, cette invitation au rêve et à la paresse. Ensuite il y a cette collection de chansons, que des classiques, que l’on connaît par coeur, pas une seule qui serve de bouche-trou. Il faut dire que Revolver, qui n’a rien d’un concept-album, a pour ligne directrice la parfaite harmonie entre les Fab Four. C’est leur meilleure époque, on n’en n’est plus aux gentils Beatles qui jouaient un gentil rock propret à faire se pâmer les minettes, on en n’est pas encore non plus à la lutte des égos et à la concurrence acharnée. Ce qui viendra par la suite, sur les trois autres albums cités plus haut, ce sera les Beatles featuring Lennon la diva & McCartney le génie & Harrisson le guitar-hero & Ringo le pote qui essaie de recoller les morceaux.
Mais en attendant, sur Revolver, personne ne tire encore musicalement la couverture à lui. Macca alterne entre les harmonies douces-amères (‘Eleanor Rigby’, et le sublime ‘For no one’) et les chansons pop péchues (‘Good day sunshine’, ‘Got to get you into my life’). Lennon explore de nouvelle possibilités sous influences lysergiques (‘I’m only sleeping’, et le génial ‘Tomorrow never knows’), Harrisson se révèle un songwriter aussi inspiré et aussi varié que les deux autres (le très guitares ‘Taxman’, le très sitar ‘Love you to’ et le très … euh, Beatles ‘I want to tell you’). Ringo, batteur sous-estimé, apporte aussi sa part d’innovations, en relachant la tension, créant ce rythme souple et régulier reconnaissable entre tous. et il se voit offrir le premier rôle le temps d’un burlesque et surréaliste ‘Yellow Submarine’ écrit sur-mesure par Lennon et Macca. Quant à George Martin, le producteur, il emballe le tout avec ce son impeccablement ligne claire, qui renforce l’unité de l’ensemble. Rendez vous à cette évidence, Revolver atteint la perfection et impose les Beatles au sommet de la pop. Depuis trente ans, il n’a jamais quitté ma platine. Donc, oui, c’est la musique de ma vie.

Hum.. je suis d’accord sur le constat, cet album est bel et bien un must, mais qui dit le contraire de toute façon ?
