L’histoire (à peu près) :
Luna, une jeune fille japonaise en voyage aux States, perd sa famille dans un accident mortel près de la zone 51, au Nevada. A la morgue, elle est visitée par Abraxas, démon féminin qui lui offre de ressusciter ses parents. Bien sûr, sept ans après, Abraxas revient et réclame sa rançon de victimes expiatoires. Alors que les apparitions d’Abraxas se multiplient, Luna est prise dans un enchaînement de phénomènes mystérieux et de meurtres atroces, sur fond de guerre de religion entre le Vatican et la secte gnostique, appuyée par une multinationale… Luna n’a d’autre recours que ses deux meilleurs amis, Issa (qui est fou d’elle) et Toshiya (qui est le fils adoptif d’un prêtre).
Ce que j’en pense :
« C’est bien, Sanctum?
- non, c’est nul, mais Boichi dessine quand même vachement bien. »
Voilà, en deux phrases, comment je suis tenté de résumer mon analyse. Et je vous jure que si je développe quand même, c’est uniquement pour ne pas faire mon gros flemmard : Sanctum me tombe vraiment des mains à chaque tome, et de plus en plus lourdement. La raison? et bien, plus le manga avance, moins j’y comprends quelque chose. Les tomes ont beau se succéder assez rapidement (on en est au quatrième et avant-dernier, série commencée en janvier dernier seulement), je n’arrive pas à me souvenir du précédent tellement je trouve ça embrouillé. C’est un peu ennuyeux.

L’histoire? Essayez d’imaginer un patchwork d’ésotérisme, de millénarisme et de religion truffé d’erreurs et d’invraisemblances, et dont la documentation se constitue essentiellement d’une version light de Da Vinci Code, le tout servant de prétexte à un enchaînement de scènes d’action qui feraient passer John Woo pour Woody Allen, et de vues imprenables sur l’anatomie bimboïssime de la déesse Luna… Christ ou Antéchrist, je l’ignore, mais quand je suivais le cathéchisme, on ne m’avait pas présenté l’alternative sous ces (gloups) courbes cet angle. Sinon je serais peut-être entré dans les ordres, et j’aurais aujourd’hui dans la cave de mon église un arsenal à faire baver d’envie un yakuza d’envergure régionale. Blague à part, des curés qui montent au front avec soutane et pistolets automatiques pour protéger la basilique Saint-Pierre, on n’atteint pas là un Everest dans le portnawak?
Alors tout y passe : les cathares, le juif errant, les sectes pré-chrétiennes, l’apocalypse, les évangiles apocryphes, la fin du monde, et même la franc-maçonnerie (ici réduite au rang de croyance religieuse!)… Sans le moindre souci de cohérence par rapport aux deux mille ans d’histoire religieuse de l’occident chrétien (avec, par exemple, un raccourci qui assimile tout le christianisme au seul catholicisme, éliminant d’office tout le protestantisme, pourtant majoritaire dans le monde anglo-saxon – allant même jusqu’à présenter l’abbaye de Westminster comme un lieu catholique, lapsus qui montre à mon avis la totale ignorance des auteurs en matière de religion). Quand on prétend manier des concepts de ce genre, le minimum est quand même de savoir de quoi on parle.
Une partouze avec des mecs déguisés en volaille, ne riez pas.
Et encore, si on enlève le fatras ésotérique, il y a peut-être de bonnes choses à tirer de l’histoire, non? Euh… Si on considère comme normal un scénario qui enchaîne les litotes comme des tunnels sur une route des Alpes, et qui multiplie les révélations chocs sans nous laisser le temps d’établir un lien avec la précédente, alors oui, je veux bien essayer encore d’être indulgent. Mais dépouillée de ses pompeux oripeaux, l’intrigue finit par ressembler au tout venant : le sort du monde est (encore!) entre les mains d’une jeune fille au physique affolant, ses deux amis d’enfance – des rivaux – hurlent à peu près toutes les trois pages qu’ils veulent la sauter protéger, ce qui leur donne (encore!) des méga-pouvoirs pour bastonner les super-méchants. Voilà. Original, non? Comme le dit à peu près un des personnages dont j’ai oublié le nom (et pourtant, je vous jure que je l’ai lu hier, hein) : « Je suis un scientifique ! Alors je dois comprendre! » Aaaah, oui. Pardon.
Tiens ça me revient : le personnage s’appelle Greg Bear, il est le chef du Security Council de la Maison Blanche, et la présidente s’appelle Ursula Le Guin. Greg Bear, référence déjà trouvée dans Eureka Seven, et Ursula Le Guin, c’est notamment l’auteur du cycle de Terremer, cf. le film de Miyazaki junior. Sympa comme références, mais ça fait un peu name-dropping, vous ne trouvez pas?
J’aurais bien aimé dire du bien de Sanctum, vraiment, mais c’est un tel brouet scénaristique, que ma déception est trop grande. Les jolis dessins de l’héroïne au carénage de rêve n’y font rien, ce n’est pas le dessin de Boichi qui arrive à le sauver. Ah, pour ça il sait faire, oui. Boichi, sans conteste, est un excellent dessinateur. J’allais dire illustrateur. Il n’y a rien de mal à ça. Mais la question qui va finir par se poser, à force, c’est : est-ce que Boichi est un bon mangaka? Parce que là aussi, après avoir lu les deux one-shots que sont Space Chef Caesar et Hotel, je me vois lui faire toujours le même reproche : de beaux dessins et des histoires peu consistantes. Être mangaka se résume-t-il à cela? Faut croire que travailler avec un scénariste, pour une fois, n’y change rien : le dessin ne suffit pas à donner du relief à un scénar aussi creux. Par comparaison, Space Chef Caesar reste son manga qui m’a le plus marqué, c’est dire.
Finalement, je me demande franchement si le vrai talent de Boichi ne réside justement pas dans cette capacité à dessiner n’importe quoi toujours de la même façon : filles de rêve, mecs bien gaulés et baston à donf. Le cahier des charges sera respecté, quelle que soit l’histoire. Reste à lui en trouver une qui tienne enfin la route – et pour cela, s’il vous plaît, la prochaine fois, inutile de convoquer l’Antéchrist.

Les prêtres surarmés, c’est un classique du manga et de l’animation japonaise. Trigun, Blue Exorcist, Hellsing, Black Lagoon,… Sans parler de long-métrages de mexploitation bien bourrins comme Machete ou Nude Nuns with Big Guns (miam).
Mais bon, je ne trouve pas le dessin de Boichi séduisant du tout, donc son nom sur la couverture, c’est pour moi un excellent repoussoir.

Tu as justement ça dans Hellsing et Blue Exorcist. Même que dans Hellsing, c’est la XIIème Section du Vatican, l’Institut Iscariote, qui constitue l’armée privée de prêtres, de moines, et de nonnes armés jusqu’aux dents.

Petite précision : une partouze, c’est plusieurs hommes et femmes. Sur l’image, j’ai l’impression qu’il n’y a qu’une dame au milieu de plusieurs messieurs, ça me semble donc être plutôt un gangbang…
oui, bon, c’était juste pour la légende – en fait, il s’agit d’un, ce que tu dis, et ça se termine pas trop bien pour la donzelle (genre rite sacrificiel tout ça).
