L’histoire : 15ème siècle, début des guerres de l’ère Sengoku. Située dans la mer de Seto, l’île d’Omishima est un petit royaume indépendant, qui parvient à préserver sa souveraineté de ses voisins plus puissants, grâce à sa flotte aguerrie. Tsuru est la fille cadette du roi de l’île, et comme ses frères, elle a appris le sabre et la navigation. Vrai garçon manqué, elle n’en fait qu’à sa tête, et ne rêve que d’une chose : partir de ce monde étriqué, fuir ces règles patriarcales et misogynes, et naviguer sur le grand large… Mais n’est-elle pas une princesse, et ne doit-elle pas aussi protéger son peuple?
Ce que j’en pense :
En dépit de ce que laisse croire le titre que j’ai donné à cette chronique, Tsuru, Princesse des mers possède à la base toutes les qualités pour faire un grand manga : histoire originale, souffle historique, héroïne charismatique et jolie, personnages secondaires bien campés, dessin superbe… Oui mais voilà, j’en ai terminé la lecture avec une terrible frustration : pile au moment où l’horizon s’ouvre enfin pour la belle aventurière, le rideau tombe brutalement et sans prévenir, et c’est fini. Deux tomes et demi (le troisième volume est complété par des récits courts de jeunesse de Hideki Mori, pas inintéressants mais tombant comme un cheveu sur la soupe), et une fin totalement indigne, torchée en trois pages. J’ignore la raison, mais connaissant les pratiques de certains éditeurs, je ne peux que la deviner… Mais je reviens sur les qualités.
Tout d’abord, Tsuru Princesse des mers est le second titre que je lis de Hideki 
Mori, dont j’avais grandement apprécié Tengu, manga de sabre en quatre volumes, chronique romancée des exploits du Shinsen-Gumi dans les dernières années du shogunat. Il se situe également dans la lignée des mangas de sabre de Hiroshi Hirata, qui lui aussi a su tirer de l’histoire ancienne des sujets passionnants. Cette fois, nous remontons plus loin dans le temps, jusqu’au commencement de l’ère Sengoku, cette période de guerres civiles qui dura un siècle jusqu’à l’avènement des trois unificateurs et la prise de pouvoir du shogun Tokugawa. L’époque a inspiré de nombreux mangas, films, anime et même jeux vidéo, mais Tsuru, Princesse des mers apporte une touche d’originalité inattendue en proposant de suivre, non pas comme souvent un samouraï viril et impassible, mais une jeune princesse combattante, féminine et féministe, à une époque où les héroïnes de cette trempe se comptaient sur les doigts d’une main ; et en se déroulant dans une région méconnue, loin des armées des grandes familles de daimyos comme les Takeda, les Shimazu, les Mori…
L’histoire, à défaut d’être 100% authentique, est plausible, et se base sur des faits et des lieux réels – d’ailleurs Hideki Mori mentionne ses sources dans le manga : des chroniques locales de familles de samouraïs, des archives conservées dans les temples Shinto – dont celui, célèbre, d’Oyamazumi-jinja, situé sur l’île d’Omishima, et qui sert d’ailleurs de décor dans le manga (ci-dessus). Il se base également sur l’attribution, à une certaine princesse Tsuru, de la seule armure féminine subsisitant de cette époque, et conservée au musée d’Oyamazumi-jinja. Quoi qu’il en soit, la tradition veut que la princesse Tsuru-hime ait pris, à seulement 16 ans, la tête de la flotte d’Omishima, repoussant les flottes ennemies supérieures en nombre grâce à son audace et à son sens du combat. Comme bien des légendes, celle-ci connaît une fin tragique, puisque deux ans plus tard, voyant son fiancé mourir au combat, Tsuru-hime se serait suicidée en se jetant par dessus bord… Triste destin que ne retient pas Hideki Mori, qui préfère ouvrir le récit sur l’extérieur.
Outre un contexte historique original et prometteur, le manga possède aussi un argument de premier choix : Tsuru elle-même, héroïne haute en couleurs, sexy mais naturelle, fausse naïve et vraie rebelle au sang bouillant. Une héroïne que j’aurais aimé suivre dans ses aventures au-delà des mers… Mais tout se passe comme si, au 3ème tome, le récit, jusqu’à lors seulement picaresque, avait trop vite changé de proportion, devenant une fresque historique de grande envergure. Parvenu à ce point, le récit proposait une réflexion intéressante sur l’ouverture du Japon vers l’extérieur, au moment où des contacts avec l’occident auraient pu changer son histoire. Hideki Mori aurait-il volontairement sabordé son récit, ne sachant ni où ni comment le mener plus loin, ou bien l’éditeur aurait-il arrêté les frais face à un succès mitigé, comme c’est l’usage?
J’ignore la réponse, mais quitte à abandonner en cours de route, fallait-il foirer la fin de telle façon? Dix pages de plus, pour soigner la conclusion même en la laissant ouverte, n’auraient pas été de trop. Des mangas courts, il y en a plein qui tiennent la route. Tengu, du même auteur, tient très bien en quatre tomes.
Je ne peux que formuler des regrets, et rêver à ce qu’aurait pu devenir cette série… et si vous voulez, malgré cela, faire la connaissance d’une héroïne vraiment charismatique, et qui ne faisait que commencer à déployer ses ailes, vous pouvez lire Tsuru Princesse des mers, malgré tout.
