L’histoire :
Dans un futur proche, post-apocalyptique, toute l’humanité a inexplicablement perdu la mémoire. Dépouillés de la civilisation, ne sachant même plus parler, les hommes sont revenus à un stade primitif, luttant de manière quasi animale pour leur survie quotidienne. Deux ans après cette catastrophe, à San Francisco, devenue une ville fantôme, un jeune homme semble avoir été rééduqué. Il se nomme Wataru (« le voyageur »). Seul au volant de sa jeep, il roule sans but précis, vainement à la recherche des restes de la civilisation.
Attaqué sans raison par un mécha sans pilote, il ne doit la vie qu’à l’intervention providentielle d’une étrange femme, capable elle aussi, de parler. Elle dit s’appeler Sophia (« la sagesse »), mais refuse d’en dire plus à son sujet. En revanche elle est très intéressée par Wataru, et lui propose un marché : elle lui révélera son identité à la seule condition que, sur la route qui les sépare de New York, Wataru réussisse à convaincre au moins un être humain de les suivre. Commence alors un étrange voyage à travers l’Amérique, ou ce qu’il en reste.
Ce que j’en pense :
Contrairement à ce que laisse supposer l’affiche, et le point de départ de l’histoire, A wind named amnesia n’est ni un film d’action post-apocalyptique à la Mad Max, ni un anime de méchas. Certes, on est en pleine science-fiction, mais cela n’est qu’un prétexte à un road movie quasiment philosophique, au rythme lent, voire contemplatif, ponctué de quelques scènes d’action sans fioritures. Le résultat ne ressemble à rien de ce que j’ai déjà pu voir en anime.
De fait, j’ai été assez décontenancé par le début du film. Après une première scène d’action rapide, plutôt violente, le rythme s’arrête brutalement après la rencontre entre Wataru et Sophia. J’ai trouvé la longue explication que donne Wataru sur sa rééducation (qui n’est pas le sujet du film), longue et gênante. En effet, elle ne sert qu’à justifier le fait que Wataru soit « civilisé », ce qui est nécessaire à la suite de l’intrigue. Ajoutez à cela une esthétique vieillotte et une animation inégale, parfois statique, et je me suis demandé si j’allais suivre l’histoire jusqu’au bout.
Mais après ce « passage obligé », A wind named amnesia prend son véritable intérêt : le long voyage de Wataru et de Sophia en quête de vérité (et d’eux-mêmes?) à travers l’Amérique est une sorte de conte philosophique sur la nature humaine, sur la notion de civilisation, et de progrès. Les rôles sont bien distribués entre Wataru et Sophia : d’un côté, le jeune garçon se croit investi d’une mission, et tente de trouver le moyen de ressusciter la part d’humanité chez les êtres qu’il croise en route ; de l’autre, Sophia se contente d’être témoin, et cherche à ouvrir les yeux de Wataru sur ce qu’elle croit être la vraie nature de l’homme : la violence, l’animalité, l’égoïsme, la superstition, l’orgueil…
Partant de là, le voyage n’aurait pas d’intérêt si les rôles étaient figés, et peu à peu, alors que Wataru perd sa naïveté et son idéalisme, Sophia comprend que tout n’est pas si simple, et qu’il y aurait bien quelque chose à sauver. Côte-à-côte, ils apprennent l’un de l’autre, et changent. Que seront-ils devenus à la fin du voyage?
Une pointe de suspense accompagne ce road-movie, lorsqu’à certaines étapes du voyage le mécha fou du début réapparaît, guidé par une sorte de haine inexpliquée envers Wataru. La violence de la machine, qui semble habitée par des sentiments de vengeance, sert de contrepoint à la redécouverte de l’humanité chez les hommes amnésiques. Elle engendre également quelques scènes d’action, dont la dernière est très prenante, réveillant le spectateur pas loin de s’assoupir durant les longues scènes de route. Le dernier tiers du film constitue d’ailleurs une nette amélioration, à tous points de vue : les décors sont plus beaux, parfois réellement superbes, les personnages sont plus attachants, et certaines scènes sont empreintes d’une douce poésie, qui récompense l’attente.
Quelques mots sur la musique : il s’agit des Variations Goldberg, de Bach, dans une version transcrite pour synthétiseur. Si le résultat sonne assez vintage années 80, le recours à cette mélodie cadre bien avec l’atmosphère, fantomatique, minimaliste et mélancolique de l’anime.
Dommage, donc, que A wind named amnesia prenne autant de temps à trouver sa forme définitive, après avoir longtemps hésité entre science-fiction, action, contemplation, au fil d’incessants changements de rythme.
Au terme du voyage, le film a l’élégance de conserver son mystère. Rien ne sera réellement expliqué sur ce qui s’est passé, et la fin reste ouverte. On regarde le chemin parcouru avec une sorte de mélancolie, une pointe de déception sur ce qu’aurait pu être A wind named amnesia entre les mains d’un réalisateur plus inspiré, capable d’un script mieux maîtrisé. Reste un film imparfait, intéressant malgré tout, et une sorte d’ovni dans la production d’anime en général.
