L’histoire :
Une vague de suicides inexpliqués survient dans une cité HLM de Tokyo. A priori aucun lien ne semble les rapprocher, si ce n’est leur horreur et leur absence de signification. La police piétine et rapidement, le commissaire chargé de l’enquête est retrouvé mort, ainsi qu’un agent, dans la cité. Un jeune inspecteur décide de donner un tour nouveau à l’enquête, et s’intéresse au paranormal. Il s’intéresse notamment à une petite fille, ainsi qu’à un vieux semi-clochard, qui sont toujours sur les lieux ou a proximité de ces morts violentes… Mais quelles forces sont donc à l’oeuvre, dans cette cité glauque et mortifère?
Ce que j’en pense :
Alors que j’avais seulement feuilleté ce manga, dessiné par Otomo avant Akira, j’étais déjà impressionné et intimidé, conscient de la qualité exceptionnelle de l’objet que j’avais entre les mains. Curieux et presque tremblant, je le ramenai rapidement chez moi et je m’y plongeai aussitôt.
Je n’ai jamais réussi à me débarrasser de ce sentiment mêlé d’excitation, de respect et presque d’incompréhension. Une par une, les qualités hors du commun de ce livre méritent l’admiration la plus absolue. Pourtant, je suis resté sur le seuil, sans y entrer tout-à-fait. Une seconde lecture s’avère nécessaire, pour m’en approprier l’histoire, et la somme des éléments qui la constituent.
Entendons-nous : c’est incontestablement un chef-d’oeuvre. Mais à tel point que je l’ai trouvé écrasant. Avec le recul de quelques jours, je vais essayer de livrer mes impressions.
Dômu, Rêves D’Enfants est un peu comme un broullion génial d’Akira. On y retrouve certains thèmes identiques : une cité froide, déshumanisée, où les rapports humains sont autant de rapports de force ; des enfants aux pouvoirs psychiques paranormaux, capables de la plus grande violence ; une police dépassée, incapable de gérer les situations de crise qui en résultent ; une anticipation, à petite échelle, d’une possible apocalypse. Par-contre, le décor est ici quotidien (et d’autant plus effrayant), et non situé dans un univers de science-fiction.
Graphiquement, Otomo fait preuve d’une d’une totale maîtrise, qui annonce également Akira. Un soin maniaque du détail, une mise en image virtuose, un découpage – j’allais dire un story-board – complexe, constitué d’ellipses, de métaphores, de flash-back et flash-forward, accélérant le rythme ou le ralentissant, suspendant le temps, créant ce sentiment de cauchemar hyperréaliste typique du style d’Akira.
Grâce à cela, Otomo sait mener un récit à son paroxysme sans user de ficelles faciles, sollicitant l’imagination du lecteur sans lui prémâcher la lecture.
J’en ai ressenti jusqu’à un sentiment de malaise, en raison de l’esthétisation de la violence : certaines scènes, qui devraient être insoutenables – corps déchiquetés, sang qui gicle – donnent un vertige plus artistique que moral.
Mais comme je le disais, parfois, Otomo recourt à l’ellipse, comme dans la case ci-contre (je ne vous raconte pas la scène) qui conclut une séquence particulièrement éprouvante, sans en montrer tout le déroulement. Le décor, ici, devient personnage, protagoniste, et c’est de plus en plus vrai au fil des pages.
Les personnages de la petite fille et du vieillard deviennent comme des dieux furieux et implacables, qui se livrent un combat dont les victimes collatérales s’empilent en dépit de toute considération morale, la violence du combat devenant une métaphore de la violence faite par la société aux plus innocents d’entre nous : les enfants, pour qui le monde se construit de façon manichéenne, et les vieux, hors du monde, qui n’ont plus rien à perdre et qui retournent à une sénilité infantile, encore plus terrifiante. Ce manga ne devrait pas s’intituler Rêves D’Enfants, mais Jeux D’Enfants. Pan, t’es mort.
Je ne saurais donc trop conseiller la lecture de Domu, rêves d’enfants, en raison de sa qualité graphique (plus que scénaristique), qui en fait une oeuvre d’une qualité rarement égalée, aussi bien dans le monde du manga (à part peut-être Urasawa ou Taniguchi) que dans le monde de la bande dessinée en général.
Bon, j’y retourne : une nouvelle lecture s’impose, avant que je ne le ramène à la médiathèque où je l’ai emprunté. Et tiens, si je me l’achetais?
Domu est un manga de grande qualité mais ce n’est pas non plus un chef d’oeuvre hors du commun, surtout que comme tu le dis Otomo l’a en partie utilisé comme brouillon comme avec son manga Fireball pour réaliser ensuite Akira (bon ok, ce n’était pas prémédité mais bon). Mais ça reste effectivement un manga indispensable pour ceux qui apprécient l’univers de cet auteur.
Quand je dis chef d’oeuvre, c’est en ayant bien conscience qu’employer cette expression est sujette à caution : je veux dire que j’ai admiré ce manga, plus que je l’ai vraiment aimé. Un peu comme un tableau de grand maître, lorsque tout le monde vous dit que c’est un chef d’oeuvre, on se dit : « oui, quel génie, c’est un indiscutablement un de ses chefs d’oeuvres », mais on arrive pas à se l’approprier tout à fait.
C’est ce que j’essaie d’exprimer plus aut, quand j’écris – peut-être maladroitement (désolé de me citer) : « Une par une, les qualités hors du commun de ce livre méritent l’admiration la plus absolue. Pourtant, je suis resté sur le seuil, sans y entrer tout-à-fait. »
