L’histoire :
Solanin est l’histoire de cinq amis, tous âgés de 22 ans et qui hésitent à franchir la frontière qui sépare les études de la vie professionnelle. Meiko est employée de bureau, elle est bien payée mais s’ennuie; son petit ami Taneda vivote comme illustrateur dans une boîte de design. Crack bosse dans la pharmacie de ses parents. Kano s’attarde en dernière année de fac, et sa copine Ai est vendeuse dans une boutique de mode. Aucun d’entre eux n’a de but précis dans la vie. A part ce qui les rassemble: le groupe de rock formé par Taneda, guitariste, Crack, batteur, et Kano, bassiste.
Lassée de cette vie au jour le jour, Meiko décide faire un break et démissionne. Elle voit bien que Taneda s’ennuie comme elle, et s’interroge sur leur amour. Elle pousse alors Taneda à s’investir dans la seule chose qui compte pour lui : la guitare. Sous son impulsion, Taneda, Crack et Kano se remettent à répéter sérieusement, enregistrent une maquette et l’envoient aux maisons de disques. Taneda met tout son coeur dans une chanson, son chef-d’oeuvre, « Solanin ». C’est une chanson sur la rupture. Rupture avec Meiko? Ou avec une vie jusque là insouciante et sans projet ?

Ce que j’en pense :
Je n’avais pas encore lu un manga qui me fasse monter les larmes aux yeux. Et bien Solanin m’a fait ce coup-là. Voilà une histoire toute simple, où il ne se passe rien de bien exceptionnel, juste l’histoire de cinq jeunes gens ordinaires, comme il y en a des millions, qui vivent, qui aiment, qui s’interrogent sur le sens de la vie, qui ont des décisions à prendre. Qui découvrent les responsabilités. Qui apprennent à travers leurs erreurs, leurs déceptions, leurs choix et ses conséquences.
Solanin est une chanson de papier, dont la musique m’est montée à la tête, et qui m’a touché profondément. J’y ai reconnu les questions que je me pose, et que je continuerai à me poser encore longtemps sans trouver les réponses. Qu’est-ce que le bonheur? A quoi sert une vie? Et à quoi sert la mort?
Solanin n’est pas un manga sur le rock. Il y est beaucoup question de musique – et elle est magnifiquement illustrée – mais ce n’est pas Beck. C’est un manga d’apprentissage, qui pourrait être mièvre ou inintéressant. Mais l’auteur use du dessin, de la mise en scène et surtout de ses personnages comme rarement j’ai lu auparavant, manga ou pas. Le sens du détail et des gestes, des attitudes, des regards, des mots prononcés ou ravalés. Tout est d’une incroyable justesse. L’auteur aime ses personnages et sait nous les faire aimer. Et quand il leur arrive quelque chose d’important, l’émotion me gagne comme si je n’étais plus un simple lecteur, mais un membre à part entière de cette petite bande d’amis. Taneda, si fragile, si idéaliste, ce pourrait être moi. Mais je pourrais aussi bien être Kano, le rigolo de service, ou Crack, le faux dur au coeur tendre. Et comment ne pas vouloir avoir Ai comme bonne amie, elle qui est toujours de bon conseil. Et surtout, surtout, comment ne pas être sous le charme immédiat de Meiko, son sourire radieux, ses yeux brillants, sa franchise rafraîchissante, et sa gentillesse communicative… Le personnage de Meiko illumine chaque page, elle est l’âme du groupe d’amis, son ciment, son moteur. Le courage dont elle fait preuve, qui s’appuie sur son rapport direct aux autres, forcent l’admiration. De tels personnages, vrais et attachants, avec leurs sentiments, voilà le principal atout de Solanin.
Sur le pan artistique, c’est un sans-faute également. Le dessin est précis et fluide, très personnel, à la fois très actuel et sans tic facile. Il nous fait partager avec un grand réalisme la vie dans une banlieue ordinaire de Tokyo, avec ses rues calmes, ses immeubles modestes et sa verdure.
Les deux volumes forment un tout, mais c’est le premier qui est le plus réussi. Impossible de raconter ce qui s’y passe, sous peine de passer à côté de l’émotion. Mais ce qui s’y passe est si important, atteignant un climax à la dernière planche, que le second volume ne peut en être que « l’après ». Il n’en est pas moins juste, ni moins touchant. Juste plus adulte…
Solanin est une chanson de papier, disais-je, mais sa petite mélodie n’a pas fini de trotter dans ma tête.
