A Chartres, si vous allez dans la rue Noël Ballay, en plein quartier piétonnier et commerçant, vous aurez forcément l’oeil attiré par la superbe façade Renaissance du Logis Huvé, une demeure du début du 16ème siècle en pierre de taille et au fronton orné. Si en plus vous venez pour acheter un livre, vous êtes au bon endroit.
Depuis la fermeture prématurée de Sakura, l’offre BD & manga se répartit entre trois lieux : la Fnac, la librairie spécialisée BD Flash, et l’Esperluète. C’est là que je viens le plus souvent, appréciant le choix, le cadre, et la disponibilité de l’équipe. Sur deux niveaux, organisés en rayons spacieux et aérés, l’Esperluète est une vraie librairie généraliste, avec la littérature, les livres pour enfants, le policier, le fantastique & SF, la BD et le manga au rez-de-chaussée, tandis que l’étage accueille les rayons plus spécialisés (scolaire, pratique, voyages, sciences humaines…). L’Esperluète est une librairie 100% indépendante, n’appartenant à aucun réseau ou chaîne, bien qu’une adhésion soit prévue prochainement au portail internet 1001 libraires.
La librairie l’Esperluète a été fondée il y a deux ans et demi, succédant au même endroit au Livre d’Or, plus connue sous le nom de son ancien propriétaire, la librairie Legué, qui a pris sa retraite après presque 60 ans d’activité ! Si le choix et la qualité de service sont toujours là, le changement de nom s’est accompagné d’un sérieux lifting, avec la suppression du rayon disquaire, et le recentrage sur l’acitivité de base : la librairie. Le rayon BD & manga en a profité, en raison de la demande, avec un espace dédié, dont le responsable, Franck, a bien voulu répondre à quelques questions (l’interview ne l’a pas empêché de répondre aussi aux clients, merci à lui pour sa disponibilité, et merci à la touche pause de mon vieux dictaphone, qui ne m’a pas lâché en route).
Franck indique que la réouverture a été l’occasion, justement, sur l’impulsion d’Olivier L’Hostis, le nouveau propriétaire, de réorganiser et agrandir spécialement le rayon BD, en accordant une place particulière au manga. L’espace dédié s’organise presque comme une salle à part, les mangas étant exposés dans toute une longueur de mur sur 6 étagères, deux consacrées aux nouveautés shojo et shonen, trois au catalogue courant, et une aux mangas « d’auteurs » et aux grands formats. Soit, au passage, 50% de plus qu’à la Fnac.
L’activité manga a démarré assez fort, en 2009, repondant à une réelle demande, puis s’est normalement tassée, avant de reprendre récemment pour différentes raisons, notamment, hélas, en raison de la fermeture de Sakura (sur le segment shojo/shonen). Selon Franck, la fidélisation de la clientèle manga demeure assez délicate : le public est assez versatile, c’est un public diversifié, et assez segmenté. Par exemple, le public shojo/shonen, majoritairement composé d’ados, ne demande pas de conseils au libraire et va directement sur les quelques titres qui font le buzz, au collège ou au lycée, les prescripteurs étant la bande de potes ou les réseaux sociaux sur internet. C’est une clientèle régulière mais qui ne cherche pas l’originalité, se concentrant sur les titres qui cartonnent, One Piece et Naruto, bien sûr, et actuellement sur Lady and Butler, Maid Sama, Crimson Prince, Kilari… Un des titres que Franck a tout de même réussi à proposer à cette clientèle est Bakuman, qui a bien marché. Il faut aussi citer le concours Mangamado, initiative locale qui a mis en avant certains titres, créant une demande sur Bakuman (justement), Ascension et Evil Heart, moins sur Une Sacrée Mamie, titre trop « adulte » (sic) pour la cible.
En revanche, en tant que librairie généraliste, le rayon manga d’auteur demeure assez marginal en termes de ventes, et son exposition correspond à un public de niche, fidèle mais peu nombreux. Des titres comme Sabu & Ichi, La Rose de Versailles ou Ayako se vendent assez confidentiellement, à un ou deux exemplaires le volume, rarement plus. D’ailleurs Franck n’en commande pas beaucoup plus. Taniguchi demeure le « best-seller » relatif de cette catégorie, son lectorat allant au-delà des habitués de mangas. Les rééditions marchent bien également, par exemple Monster, ou Death Note Black Edition. Il y a aussi et enfin une clientèle pour le manga adulte, presque exclusivement feminin et intéressé par le yaoi (les volumes sont sur une étagère un peu en hauteur, si vous les cherchez).
A la question plus personnelle des titres qui lui ont particulièrement plu ces derniers mois, bien que n’ayant pas le temps de tout lire (il s’occupe aussi du rayon BD, comics, SF et fantastique, ouf!), Franck me cite en premier Pluto, dont il attend la fin avec impatience, Ikigami, L’Île de Hozuki (ce fut un vaste débat entre lui et et le newbie!), Bakuman, dont il apprécie le sujet et la manière, My Girl (que je n’aurais pas remarqué s’il ne me l’avait pas signalé…) et Vinland Saga. Bon, à quelques détails près, je trouve que c’est quand même bien d’être d’accord avec son libraire…
Bref, vous l’aurez compris, l’Esperluète, c’est typiquement le lieu où je me sens à l’aise, spacieux, cosy (il y a des fauteuils et des sofas pour se poser et lire), et j’apprécie le fait de pouvoir y prendre mon temps, changer de rayon, pas seulement rester le nez dans les mangas et aller vers les romans, les essais, les polars. Et je trouve assez amusant, au fond, d’acheter mes mangas derrière la façade d’un monument historique.

Sakura a fermé ? Bon, je n’avais pas une haute opinion de cette boutique étant donné la description que tu en as fait, mais c’est toujours triste pour la propriétaire… Là, ma boutique de JV depuis plus de 10 ans a fait faillite, ça m’a choqué. Mais je suppose que les boutiques trop spécialisées ou non franchisées sont condamnées à disparaitre, c’est la triste loi du marché.
L’Esperluette a l’air sympa, et le vendeur a une vision pragmatique tout ce qu’il y a de plus valable.
