Cela faisait des mois que je tournais autour du pot, sans savoir par quel bout commencer l’exploration du Gundamverse, parce que vous, je ne sais pas, mais moi, une franchise comportant une telle quantité de séries, OVA et films, ça me foutait les jetons. J’avais même commencé à développer une sorte de défiance, vis-à-vis d’un univers qui ne me parlait pas, où je ne voyais que des robots multicolores pilotés par des djeun’s à états d’âme, avec des titres complètement abscons du genre Universal Mobile Suit Zero Gundam Wing Fighter Destiny War 0083 ZZ Truc Origin : The Endless Counter-Attack Versus The Revenge of the New Type, A New Translation. Mettez-vous à ma place… Finalement, un concours de circonstances m’a foutu dedans. C’est toujours pareil quand on veut et qu’on n’ose pas : quand on se penche du haut du plongeoir, il y a toujours quelqu’un derrière pour vous pousser et voilà, reste plus qu’à plonger en beauté, en essayant de ne pas faire un plat pour ne pas trop être ridicule. Et une fois dedans, on se rend compte que l’eau est plutôt bonne.
Le plongeoir, c’était le concours des Sama Awards 2012, avec la lecture des articles de Guilhem sur le Dino Bleu, Mobile Suit Gundam : Author’s Cut. Et le pousseur, ce fut Tetho, qui me guida jusqu’à un stand de l’Epitanime où il ne me restait plus qu’à acheter le coffret des films de Mobile Suit Gundam. Que j’ai fini de regarder hier soir. Et dont je vais vous parler maintenant. (Opopop : on se calme, n’attendez pas une analyse trop poussée, ce sont juste des impressions de visionnage, hein.)
Vite fait, l’histoire :
Alors voilà, c’est la guerre dans le système solaire. D’un côté, la Fédération Terrienne et de l’autre, les séparatistes de Zeon, une colonie humaine spatiale qui a proclamé son indépendance et qui veut imposer sa nouvelle idéologie, au nom d’une supposée race supérieure, les New Types. Le film commence lorsque Zeon mène un raid sur Side-7, une colonie de la Fédération, où est basé le projet Gundam, un nouveau type de Mobile Suit (des armures géantes autonomes pilotées par des as), conçu pour répliquer au armes puissantes de Zeon. Suite à de nombreuses péripéties, le Mobile Suit Gundam s’échappe, piloté par Amuro Ray, jeune fils de l’ingénieur qui l’a créé. Il rejoint son vaisseau-mère, le White Base, et intègre son équipage, composé de novices comme lui.
Le White Base et le Gundam cherchent à rejoindre la Terre, en échappant aux assauts de Char Aznable, alias la Comète Rouge, le meilleur pilote de Zeon. Commence alors une série de batailles puis une vaste contre-offensive des forces de la Fédération, dont Amuro et son Gundam deviennent le fer de lance. D’escarmouches en véritables batailles rangées, le White Base et le Gundam avancent vers le face-à-face final, qui décidera du sort de l’humanité.
Ce que j’en pense :
Petit rappel : ce coffret rassemble la trilogie des films basés sur la toute première des séries de la franchise Gundam. Il s’agit d’un montage des 43 épisodes originaux, avec de nouvelles scènes, conservant la trame générale et proposant une conclusion nettement enrichie. Il en résulte une impression de visionnage contrastée : les deux premiers films souffrent d’un rythme assez frénétique, en raison de nombreux raccourcis, tandis que le troisième film possède une narration plus aboutie, jusqu’à un final carrément grandiose. Et je dois reconnaître que cela s’est ressenti sur ma perception globale de l’oeuvre : au début j’ai eu du mal à suivre, les scènes se succédant de manière parfois confuse sans me laisser le temps de tout saisir au contexte géostratégique complexe (cf. la bataille d’Odessa), et à la multiplicité des personnages, dont certains meurent au combat presque aussitôt après avoir été présentés. Mais ça s’arrange progressivement, grâce à une narration ne s’écartant finalement pas de son axe principal, conduisant à la dernière bataille qui, elle, est mise en place avec précision et se développe avec cohérence, pour s’achever dans un climax superbement amené.
Un des grands atouts de Mobile Suit Gundam est pour moi de mettre en scène une galerie de personnages pas forcément originaux, certes, mais bien campés, et qui évoluent de manière réaliste, souvent touchante, et sans manichéisme. Que ce soit Amuro Ray, archétype du jeune héros qui devient adulte en découvrant sa responsabilité à travers le développement progressif de ses pouvoirs, ou Char Aznable, « méchant » classique mais charismatique à la personnalité évolutive et aux motivations troubles, tous progressent en dévoilant petit à petit les tréfonds de leur âme.
L’autre aspect séduisant est l’intelligence du scénario de Tomino, souvent décrit comme ayant amené la révolution du real robot, c’est-à-dire grosso modo l’abandon du thème du robot magique voire divin à la Mazinger Z au profit du thème du mécha réaliste, mais dont je retiens surtout l’accent mis sur l’humain, la guerre d’indépendance de Zeon introduisant de nombreux sujets adultes comme la politique, l’idéologie, la propagande, le cynisme, le sort des civils, et, au fond, le pacifisme.
Réaliste, vraiment?
En effet, devant ces thèmes lourds, le réalisme du real robot demeure à mon sens encore tout relatif : des combats de méchas géants multicolores faisant du boucan dans l’espace, dont le pilotage s’apprend en accéléré grâce à un manuel, dans le genre crédible, on peut trouver mieux. Non, beaucoup plus adulte et subtile est la façon dont la guerre est montrée : une série d’offensives planifiées selon les règles éternelles de la stratégie, décidées par des états-majors compétents et calculateurs, et mises en oeuvres par des soldats disciplinés dont on voit la mort en direct, sans pathos romantique (sauf quelquefois, lorsqu’il s’agit de personnages emblématiques). Il est significatif que ce soit le camp le plus puissant économiquement et démographiquement qui l’emporte, au-delà des exploits individuels et des coups tactiques : ainsi le veut l’art de la guerre, Sun Tzu ne disait pas autre chose.
La guerre elle-même découle d’une logique somme toute très humaine : l’affrontement de deux camps aux régimes politiques et aux structures sociétales opposées, aux fondements idéologiques antagonistes, mais finalement aussi impérialistes l’un que l’autre. D’un côté, la Fédération, supposée démocratique mais alourdie par une bureaucratie tentaculaire, dont même les héros doutent de la légitimité ; de l’autre, Zeon, société militarisée et élitiste, dont l’aristocratie guerrière s’appuie sur des masses fanatisées par la propagande. Le parallèle avec la seconde guerre mondiale est évident, opposant les Alliés et l’Axe. A titre d’exemple, lorsque Gihren, le dirigeant de Zeon qui tire les ficelles dans l’ombre, dévoile son plan de domination de l’univers, son propre père, le duc Degwin, n’hésite pas à le comparer à Hitler, et à lui prédire le même sort : responsabilité de l’holocauste, puis mort et défaite dans la honte. En plaçant Hitler dans les dialogues de façon explicite, Tomino provoque un vrai choc dans la perception par le spectateur, historisant la réflexion sur les mutations humaines des New Types, et relançant le débat éternel sur le droit de l’élite à gouverner les humains ordinaires. De toutes façons, les New Types sont présents dans chaque camp belligérant, et la mort de certains d’entre eux, pour lyrique qu’elle puisse apparaître à l’écran, n’est rien d’autre qu’une métaphore de l’absurdité et de la brutalité de la mort à la guerre.
Au-delà de ces thèmes, sombres et réalistes, alternant entre pessimisme et espoir pacifiste, j’ai apprécié le spectacle visuel qu’offre Mobile Suit Gundam. Certes, les canons esthétiques de la science-fiction nippone ont grandement évolué, et j’ai pu sourire des uniformes bariolés, des robots trapus et peinturlurés, et des vaisseaux à l’aérodynamisme sacrifié à des formes animalières ou mythologiques, comme le White Base, qui ressemble sous certains angles au Sphynx égyptien. L’animation porte également son âge canonique, surtout au début, avec des déplacements de personnages raides et empruntés, mais le rythme et la mise en scène emportent tout, et m’ont fait oublier ces défauts propres à l’époque. Les scènes terrestres sont lourdes, mais dès qu’on est dans l’espace, tout s’arrange, comme si l’absence de gravité donnait des ailes aux animateurs, autant qu’aux personnages. Et puis, franchement, Char Aznable, quelle classe ! Le loup et le casque pseudo-colonial ne l’aident pas au début, mais attendez le dernier combat, à la dernière demi-heure, pour moi c’est lui, le vrai héros de Mobile Suit Gundam.
La fin m’a vraiment enthousiasmé, et j’avoue que j’ai hâte de passer à la suite, les Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, et Char contre-attaque. Hé, z’avez vu, j’arrive maintenant à citer les titres sans trop me mélanger les pinceaux. Le plongeon en valait le coup. Allez j’y retourne. Plaffff. Aïe.

Avant de t’attaquer à Zeta Gundam puis Char Contre-attaque, je te conseille de regarder tout d’abord les séries intermédiaires entre les deux : 0080, War in the Pocket, qui décrit la guerre du point de vue civil et des enfants, une petite perle qui se regarde vite (6 oav); 08th Ms Team, où on l’on suit durant la Guerre d’un An le quotidien d’une troupe de Mobile Suit de la Fédération; et bien évidemment l’excellent 0083 Stardust Memory, série de 13 oav qui est une véritable perle graphique et scénaristique, et qui permet de mieux comprendre le contexte géopolitique de Zeta Gundam.

Coucou Mackie, super billet que voilà et à côté duquel j’étais passé. Je vais bientôt finir les 43 épisodes de la série et ton article sur les films (qui en sont donc un condensé) résume parfaitement la série. Le parallélisme qui est fait avec la seconde guerre mondiale est évident, mais c’est ce qui la rend si intéressante. Quant à l’animation il faut en effet contextualiser parce qu’il serait bête de passer à côté d’un scénario aussi bon. Car Aznable est en effet très classe, j’ai du coup très hâte de voir le dernier épisode, puis les films ! Ah au fait, le coup du pilote qui apprend via un manuel à conduire le Gundam, c’était apparemment très courant à l’époque. Et toi aussi, tu as remarqué que dès l’arrivé dans l’espace, c’était visuellement mieux ? C’est à croire qu’ils ont misé tout le budget sur la seconde partie de la série. Remarque, ça vaut mieux car la première moitié se résumait ainsi: 10 première minutes d’épisodes, les méchants arrivent. 2ème partie de l’épisode, Amuro arrive et démonte tout le monde. Je caricature, mais c’était un peu ça, avec quelques moments de drame (cf Ryu, ect…). Bref bref je m’égare, super article, j’espère en faire un aussi bien !
