(Attention, ce billet contient une dose de spoil non négligeable)
Les meilleures surprises sont celles à double effet : 1) je trouve le coffret Albator 84 de Déclic Images à 10€ d’occase, 2) en le déballant je m’aperçois, ce qui n’est pas indiqué sur le boîtier, qu’il inclut le film Waga Seishun no Arcadia, en version originale non censurée, comme introduction à la série. Et là, je vous le dis tout de suite : bonne dope. Je ne m’attendais pas du tout à voir un film de cette qualité. Et sans attendre d’avoir (re)visionné la série Albator 84, il faut que je vous en dise tout de suite quelques mots.
L’histoire :
Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, années 20. L’Arcadia, un avion biplan parti de Port Moresby, tente de franchir les Montagnes Stanley, pour rallier la base de Rabaul, vers le nord. Aux commandes, Phantom F. Harlock, un pilote chevronné. Mais la montagne semble douée d’une volonté propre, et il voit apparaître le spectre d’une sorcière ricanante à travers son cockpit recouvert par le givre…
Mille ans plus tard. La Terre vient d’être envahie par des extraterrestres belliqueux, les Illumidas. Par défi, un jeune officier, nommé Harlock, a volontairement écrasé son vaisseau sur l’astroport où il doit se rendre. Impressionné, le général Zeda, chef des Illumidas, lui propose vainement de se rallier à lui, et finalement le laisse libre, privé de ses armes et de son commandement.
Retourné à la vie civile, Harlock découvre que sur la Terre ravagée, les humains sont réduits à quémander jusqu’à leur nourriture… Il fait la connaissance de Toshiro, un ingénieur de génie qui ne paye pas de mine, et qui a construit en grand secret un vaisseau, l’Arcadia. Ensemble, avec l’aide de parias et de résistants, et de la contrebandière Emeraldas, ils vont donner le signal de la révolte… En hissant le pavillon noir des pirates.
Ce que j’en pense :
Je suis loin d’être un connaisseur du Leijiverse, pour l’instant je n’en ai découvert que des éléments disparates (Albator 78, Harlock Saga, le manga Galaxy Express et voilà) mais je crois pouvoir dire que Waga seishun no Arcadia est une des clés essentielles de l’oeuvre de Leiji Matsumoto. Lorsque l’on sait qu’il est le fils d’un officier de l’armée de l’air japonaise, il est facile de comprendre le côté autobiographique des deux flash-backs historiques du film. L’auteur ne s’est jamais caché d’avoir bâti son oeuvre autour d’éléments personnels, voire intimes, ce qui peut leur donner un côté limite obsessionnel – et plus généralement, lui donner l’aspect d’une quête, comme s’il ne faisait que recommencer chaque fois la même oeuvre en recherchant la perfection. A ce titre, Waga seishun no Arcadia contient déjà l’essentiel des thèmes sur lesquels il développera de nombreuses variations : l’amitié fraternelle, l’amour pur, la femme idéale, le sacrifice chevaleresque, le paradis perdu, l’éternel retour, le destin… et sur le plan esthétique, l’aviation, le fantastique, la musique classique, l’Allemagne romantique, la Grèce antique…
Au passage, je signale que ce film est suffisamment bien écrit pour se suffire à lui-même, et pour que même quelqu’un qui ne connaîtrait rien à la biographie de Harlock/Albator, puisse en apprécier les qualités intrinsèques. Film d’aventures romanesques, sinon romantiques, space opera à la Star Wars, aussi irréaliste que poétique… Mais d’abord quelques mots sur sa genèse.
Si Waga seishun no Arcadia est proposé en DVD n°1 du coffret Albator 84 de Declic Images, c’est moins parce qu’il a été réalisé juste avant la série, dont il constitue le prologue, que parce qu’il avait été à l’époque vendu ainsi à TF1, qui n’hésita pas à le découper en cinq épisodes et, au passage, à le censurer sévèrement. Car c’est une des bonnes surprises de ce coffret, que de nous donner la version originale et intégrale, avec la fameuse scène de la seconde guerre mondiale non censurée. Nous sommes encore dans les années 80, et dans ce qui était considéré comme un « dessin-nimé »pour enfants, il ne fallait pas que nos chères têtes blondes puissent voir un héros dans un pilote allemand de la Luftwaffe, qui abat des Spitfire de la RAF…
En effet, après la scène introductive, où Phantom F. Harlock pilote son Arcadia au-dessus de la Nouvelle-Guinée, un second flash-back intervient, mettant cette fois en scène son fils, Phantom F. Harlock II, pilote émérite de Messerschmidt BF-109. Nous sommes dans les derniers mois de la guerre, les combats ont lieu au-dessus du territoire du Reich, dans le sud de l’Allemagne, près de la frontière hélvétique. Cet épisode est fondamental dans l’intrigue, à deux niveaux :
a- tout d’abord, il donne l’origine de l’amitié entre Harlock et Toshiro. En fait, ces deux-là se sont déjà rencontrés dans le passé, à travers leurs ancêtres – et sosies – lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. Phantom F. Harlock II rencontre un jeune japonais nommé Toshiro, qui l’aide à réparer son avion endommagé par les combats. S’étant mutuellement sauvé leurs vies (y compris sous les balles des soldats français – méchants gaullistes!), Harlock et Toshiro se vouent une amitié qui transcende les siècles, puisqu’elle ressurgit à travers leurs descendants, au 30ème siècle, sur une Terre soumise au joug des Illumidas. L’amitié, voilà un des sujets principaux de Waga seishun no Arcadia, dont un des moments forts est cette nuit où Harlock, fraîchement éborgné par un tir des Illumidas, retrouve ses alter ego Emeraldas et surtout Toshiro, puis, rejoints par les Tokargiens (des extra-terrestres dont la planète a été détruite par les Illumidas), tous ensemble, ils font le serment de combattre jusqu’à la mort…
b- ensuite, et surtout, la scène de la seconde guerre mondiale fonde le mythe de l’Arcadia. Les deux ancêtres de Harlock sont des êtres solitaires, des pilotes comme il y eut des chevaliers, en quête d’un graal personnel. Ils font corps avec leurs avions, qui se nomment chaque fois Arcadia, comme la mythique Arcadie, en Grèce, pays idéal où règne la paix et l’harmonie entre l’homme et la nature. Cette quête fait l’objet d’un livre de souvenirs, écrit par le premier des Harlock : intitulé L’Arcadia de ma jeunesse. Si ce n’était pas assez évident, le pays d’origine des Harlock s’appelle Heiligenstadt : soit une ville de Thuringe, Allemagne centrale, soit une ville d’Autriche, faisant aujourd’hui partie de l’agglomération viennoise, où, pour l’anecdote, Beethoven rédigea son testament. Dans les deux hypothèses, ce nom est à considérer dans un sens poétique, comme l’Arcadie, puisqu’en allemand il signifie : ville sainte ou ville bénie. Arcadie ou Heiligenstadt, c’est la quête du paradis perdu de l’enfance.
A noter qu’avec ma manie de vérifier les lieux dans mes atlas, je n’ai pas trouvé de montagne exactement nommée Stanley en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Il s’agit plutôt de la chaîne montagneuse Owen Stanley Range, qui culmine à 4072 m avec le Mount Victoria, et qui isole la capitale, Port Moresby, de la côte nord. Dans l’histoire, Phantom F. Harlock tente de rejoindre la base de Rabaul, sur l’Île de Nouvelle-Bretagne, et doit soit survoler la chaîne montagneuse, soit faire un crochet de plusieurs centaines de kilomètres. Il relate l’épisode dans ses mémoires, ce qui indique qu’il a survécu. En 1942, l’Owen Stanley Range fut le cadre d’une importante bataille terrestre et aérienne entre Alliés et Japonais, ces derniers ne parvenant finalement pas à franchir ce dernier rempart pour atteindre Port-Moresby, position stratégique majeure qui leur aurait permis de menacer directement l’Australie…
Pour riche d’arrières-plans symboliques et historiques qu’il soit, Waga seishun no Arcadia reste cependant avant tout un authentique space opera, avec des gunfights dans des ruines de science-fiction, des combats de vaisseaux spatiaux, et de nombreuses scènes épiques à la limite du psychédélique. Pour le réalisme scientifique, on repassera. Mais pour la poésie évocatrice des images, par contre, rien ne manque. Et surtout pas la musique : les thèmes sont composés par Toshiyuki Kimori, dans un style symphonique très années 80 (les cuivres… et surtout les synthés!), mais qui emprunte à trois reprises des thèmes célèbres de la musique classique :
♦ Tout d’abord lors de la scène d’introduction, celle de Phantom F. Harlock père, où résonnent les premiers accords de la 9ème Symphonie du Nouveau Monde, d’Anton Dvorak, déja rencontrée dans Evangelion. Pour mémoire, je rappelle que ce compositeur tchèque créa sa 9ème Symphonie aux Etats-Unis, et qu’elle inspira aussi bien Serge Gainsbourg (pour la chanson Initials B.B.) que John Williams (pour Star Wars), et Howard Shore (pour le Seigneur des Anneaux). Extrait :
♦ Moins connu (quoique), c’est le compositeur suédois Edvard Grieg qui est cité, avec sa magnifique Chanson de Solveig, extrait du drame musical Peer Gynt :
♦ Enfin, et de façon plus conventionnelle, Toshiyuki Kimori convoque le célèbre Adagio d’Albinoni, qui comme chacun le sait aujourd’hui, n’est pas une oeuvre d’Albinoni, mais peu importe : au moment de (SPOIL!!!) l’enterrement de Maya, il souligne la gravité et la mélancolie de l’instant :
Kitsch, excessif, irréaliste et bavard, Waga seishun no Arcadia est tout cela. Mais bien plus encore : deux heures de pure mythologie, forgeant un des héros les plus charismatiques de la japanimation, à travers une réalisation qui a très bien vieilli : plans cinématographiques en 16/9ème de toute beauté, très travaillés, scènes toutes plus épiques les unes que les autres, défauts plus touchants qu’agaçants : oui, la 2D pure peut émerveiller lorsqu’elle illustre un grand récit, aux nombreuses références, mais aux thèmes universels. Définitivement, une grande et belle surprise. Et si c’etait cela, l’âge d’or de l’Arcadia?
J’aime d’amour ce film qui fait de Harlock un héros romantique au possible, qui intériorise et prend tout sur lui, s’ajoute une vraie posture, avec un Harlock plus poseur, plus ténébreux et classe que jamais à coup de phrase comme « on ne disparait pas tant qu’on poursuit son rêve » ou ce fabuleux « Qu’ils se contentent de ce monde étriqué si ils veulent, notre monde à nous, c’est l’Univers !« . Tellement charismatique qu’il retourne même ses ennemi contre leur camp.
Et puis ce générique de fin, fabuleux à coup de « Mon seul est de mener une vie qui fasse que lorsque je rende l’âme, ce soit en riant.« . Oui moi aussi une partie de ma jeunesse s’est déroulée en Arcadie.
Sinon pour la censure, une autre raison est que la 1ere série donnait des origines françaises à Albator. Du coup en plus d’être mal vu, ça contredisait un peu tout ça.
Je ne peux qu’être d’accord… Du coup je redoute un peu de me lancer dans Mugen kido SSX. Mais bon, c’est pour la bonne cause…
