Du retard dans mes one-shots (aussi)

Dans cette vaine tentative de mettre à jour les chroniques par rapport à mes lectures, qui ressemble au remplissage du tonneau des Danaïdes, et que j’ai entamée il y a quelques jours avec une série de tomes 1, je m’attaque cette fois aux one-shots. Remarquez que les séries complètes, ou même incomplètes mais comptant plusieurs volumes, je les mets consciencieusement de côté, parce qu’il ne sert à rien de remettre à demain ce qu’on peut faire après-demain. En plus, les one-shots en question n’ont pas de rapport entre eux, même pas d’actualité particulière, c’est juste que je les ai stockés par terre de mon côté du lit en attendant d’aller chez ce marchand suédois de meubles bas de gamme où j’espère trouver des solutions de rangement que je peux financer : ça fait des mois que mes pauvres étagères sont totalement débordées.

Ce genre de billet facile me permet de gagner un temps précieux par rapport à la rédaction des chroniques d’actualité. Il semble à ce sujet que la prochaine sera consacrée à Billy Bat, puisque que j’ai demandé cette semaine à mes abonnés de FB de voter pour la chronique qu’ils souhaiteraient lire en premier. Billy Bat l’emporte pour l’instant nettement devant Seven Shakespeares, Bonne nuit Punpun, Adekan et Thermae Romae, et mis à part que ce n’est pas une idée géniale de proposer un sondage en plein mois d’août, vu les stats de fréquentation, je crois que je vais reconduire la formule. Et même la pimenter un peu : vous laisser, une fois de temps en temps, décider du sujet de ma prochaine chronique, y compris lorsque je n’ai pas encore vu/lu  le manga ou l’anime en question. Evidemment, si des petits rigolos me réclament l’intégrale de Legend of Galactic Heroes, il risque d’y avoir un léger hiatus jusqu’à ce que l’article soit effectivement publié. Mais c’est le jeu, ma pauvre Lucette. Et revenons à mes one-shots.

Zetman
de Masazaku Katsura
Shueisha, 1995 – Tonkam, 1997

Recueil de quatre histoires publiées dans Weekly Shonen Jump ou Jump V entre 1989 et 1995, ce volume prend naturellement le titre du plus vendeur de ses récits, Zetman, même s’il faut bien l’avouer, il ne s’agit que d’une première mouture du héros qui émergera finalement en 2002, avec le succès que l’on sait. Donc évidemment, sans établir de comparaison qualitative entre l’esquisse et l’oeuvre future, ça n’a pas grand chose à voir. Le Zet n’est pas ici le fruit d’une expérience interdite, mais la matérialisation d’une créature de jeu vidéo dans le réel. Les combats sont basés sur le principe des levels et des boss, avec un questionnement juste esquissé sur les notions de bien et de mal. Déjà tourmenté et ultraviolent, notre superhéros a un look plus gothique (cf. la couverture), mais l’essai ne sera pas transformé en l’état. Les autres récits sont de l’ordre de l’anecdotique, avec une première version de Shadow Lady, mais finalement, le seul intérêt autre que documentaire que j’ai trouvé à ce recueil, c’est le récit Shin-no-shin, cocktail inspiré d’humour et d’action, qui aurait pu naître sous la plume d’Akira Toriyama. Bref, à acquérir si vous le trouvez d’occase pas trop cher, mais vraiment pas prioritaire.

La maison de poupées
de Junji Ito
Tonkam, 2010

Des crèmes glacées au goût étrange, des cigarettes mortifères, un disque de jazz qui tue, des humains qui se transforment en marionnettes… Junji Ito nous livre son habituel spectacle grand-guignol et dérangeant, mais alors que la ville sans rue ou le journal de Soichi bénéficiaient d’une certaine unité, la maison de poupées réunit des récits trop disparates pour ne pas avoir l’air d’un fourre-tout. L’effet remplissage est accentué par la différence de qualité des histoires, certaines courtes et sans surprise, d’autres un peu tirées en longueur, et finalement, ça fait catalogue. Et les personnages se ressemblent tellement que ça finit par lasser. En conclusion, si j’apprécie toujours le décalage savoureux entre le dessin impersonnel et l’imagination des situations, et si la couverture phosphorescente fait son petit effet la lumière éteinte, la maison de poupées est pour moi une relative déception.

Le cercle du suicide
d’Usamaru Furuya
Sakka, 2005

L’histoire : une cinquantaine d’adolescentes se suicident ensemble en se tenant par la main et en se jetant sous un train à la gare de Shinjuku. Saya, la seule survivante, n’a qu’un seul regret : ne pas avoir suivi dans la mort son idole, une lycéenne qui avait monté le « projet » et convaincu les autres de la suivre. Dès lors, Saya essaie de reprendre le relais, et tente de recruter à son tour des camarades, à commencer par sa meilleure amie, Kyoko…
Cela fait un moment que j’entends parler en termes laudateurs de Furuya, le versatile auteur de Palepoli, Genkaku Picasso et Litchi Hikari Club, j’étais donc content de tomber sur ce livre d’occase, et je dois reconnaître qu’il ne m’a pas laissé de marbre. Avec des thèmes aussi difficiles que le mal-être, le suicide, et la prostitution des lycéennes, Le cercle du suicide pourrait n’être qu’un récit sociologique de plus, mais Usamaru Furuya n’est pas Ryu Murakami, et il traite le sujet de façon certes frontale (rien ne nous est épargné, corps déchiquetés, scènes de mutilation, sexe explicite…) mais en lui donnant une dimension fantastique à la Ring. Pas d’explication, pas de hauteur de vue, c’est du brutal, et j’ai trouvé cela d’autant plus troublant. D’autant que le dessin (voyez déjà la couverture) ajoute au caractère bizarre et tordu de l’histoire, avec ce côté faussement naïf, ce trait « tremblé » et la quasi totale absence de trames. La fin est, dans le genre, particulièrement réussie. Évidemment, ça peut passer pour de la complaisance, mais j’ai trouvé au contraire que la manière explicite et directe d’aborder ces sujets valait bien des pages et des pages d’analyses sur des phénomènes bien plus fréquents qu’on l’imagine… Un des mangas les plus marquants que j’ai lus cette année.

Le Chant d’Apollon
d’Osamu Tezuka
1970 – Kana, 2012

Ce n’est hélas pas le cas de ce Chant d’Apollon, qui bien que très ambitieux (par son sujet et son format), m’a demandé plus d’efforts à finir que d’habitude pour des oeuvres d’Osamu Tezuka. C’est l’histoire de Shogo, enfant battu, qui devenu adulte, est totalement incapable de construire la moindre relation amoureuse. Sous prétexte de le ré-éduquer, un psychiatre lui inflige un traitement de choc, pendant lequel, hallucination ou réalité, Shojo se voit condamné par une déesse à subir une malédiction : revivre éternellement une seule histoire d’amour avec une femme idéale, qui doit chaque fois s’achever tragiquement. A travers ses avatars, Shojo doit donc apprendre l’amour, à différentes époques, sur différents mondes, toujours avec la même femme. Avant de mourir et de ressusciter ailleurs. Cette histoire, Tezuka l’a voulue universelle et mythologique, probablement pour permettre au jeune lecteur de recevoir le message somme toute très bouddhiste du cycle de la vie. Cet épais volume (environ 580 pages) est ainsi découpé en épisodes qui m’ont plus ou moins intéressé, revisitant des thèmes secondaires moult fois abordés dans d’autres œuvres du maître : l’écologie, le modernisme, la guerre (avec un épisode qui met en scène des nazis et des juifs)… C’est parfois prenant, quand ça prend des accents de thriller ; à d’autres, j’ai trouvé ça daté, voire totalement kitsch : les épisodes de science-fiction sont vintage, mais dans le mauvais sens du terme. Et surtout trop longs, au risque de briser le rythme des réincarnations, qui au début fait l’intérêt du pavé.

Je voulais également parler de Sous notre atmosphère, mais ce sera pour une autre fois ; la flemme me reprend et la chronique est bien assez longue comme ça. Et maintenant, chose promise chose due : ce week-end, ce sera Billy Bat.

    Juste pour dire que t’es sûrement le plus gros amateur de one-shots du coin. J’en cherchais dernièrement et t’étais ma principale source. T’aurais une short-list à me proposer? (Je t’embête là, je sais :p)
    Junji Ito est un auteur qui me dé4oit toujours plus. Depuis Spirale. il n’a rien écrit qui me surprenne. Du grand guignol certainement mais pas dérangeant pour un sou tellement c’est répétitif.
    Je te conseille vivement de continuer dans la découverte des oeuvres de Furuya. En particulier Litchi Hikari Club même si son prix est indécent.
    Quand au Chant d’Apollon, je l’avais lu bien avant son édition mais j’ai pas vraiment songé à me procurer celle-ci. Ne serait-ce parce que sa structure donnait l’impression d’un Phénix au rabais… ou parce que je n’aimais pas la jaquette. T’as lu Demain les Oiseaux?

      Furuya aussi, c’est sûr.
      ben, pour les one-shots, il y en a plein que j’ai déjà chroniqués… si tu cliques sur le tag « one-shot » en bas d’article, il doit y en avoir pas mal. de ceux dont j’ai parlé récement, il y a les Takahama (Sad Girl, et surtout Deux expressos), et Sans même nous dire au-revoir, Un bus passe, Kaikisen (de Satoshi Kon), Hideout (dont je n’ai pas parlé, mais c’est pas mal), les deux Tsutsui (Duds Hunt et surtout Reset), Kaze No Sho (un Taniguchi à l’époque médiévale), les titres de Fumiyo Kouno…
      et pour revenir à Tezuka, il y a LE chef d’oeuvre : Ayako.

        et puis les Shigeru Mizuki, comme Opération Mort, Hitler, et Non-non-ba (je n’ai chroniqué que le premier cité, mais tous sont passionnants). un peu chers, mais le travail d’édition de Cornelius vaut l’achat.

    Yep, les Mizuki sont très chers. C’est justement pour cela que je n’ai encore rien lu de cet auteur :(
    Je vais m’intéresser aux Takahama et j’attends tes billets sur Billy Bat et Sous notre Atmosphère!

    Je pensais que tu aurais plus apprécié Le Chant d’Appolon. Je n’ai pas trouvé qu’il s’agissait du meilleur Tezuka, mais je l’ai trouvé intéressant. Bon, Sous notre Atmosphère reste clairement meilleur.
    Le Cercle du Suicide, il faudrait que je le relise, car j’étais probablement un peu « jeune » quand je l’ai découvert la première fois.

    Concernant les Shigeru Mizuki, j’adore Opération Mort, Non Non Ba un peu moins. Hitler est connu pour sa rigueur historique, mais finalement, ce n’est qu’une biographie de Hitler ; intéressant, mais trop impersonnel si nous mettons de côté le dessin.

      le livre de mizuki est bien plus qu’une simple biographie : à la base c’en est une, certes, mais vue par un japonais, et pas n’importe lequel, et pas à n’importe quel moment. mais j’y reviendrai en détail, j’ai bien l’intention d’écrire à ce sujet.
