Mon premier Yaoi : In the Walnut, Toko Kawai

L’histoire :
Tanizaki, 24 ans, dirige la galerie d’art que lui a léguée son grand-père. Nakai, qui est issu de la même école d’art, travaille dans une boîte de prod et rêve de devenir réalisateur. Ils sortent ensemble depuis plusieurs années, mais n’ont pas encore franchi le cap de la vie commune. En effet, Nakai, naïf et insouciant, se pose des questions sur Tanizaki, qui n’a pas encore brisé la « coquille de noix » sous laquelle il dissimule ses sentiments… et ses projets, qui ne sont pas très clairs : sous couvert de son activité de galeriste, ne serait-il pas en réalité un faussaire, impliqué dans diverses affaires de faux tableaux?

Ce que j’en pense :
Le yaoi étant devenu le genre prolifique à succès que l’on sait, il fallait bien que j’en lise au moins un pour me faire une idée. Mais jusqu’à présent, j’étais plutôt circonspect, craignant que le côté cul (et cucul) annihile tout début de commencement d’intrigue, comme j’ai pu le lire sur certains résumés de feu (sigh) le blog du serial loser – mais je soupçonne ce dernier d’avoir soigneusement choisi les plus nanardesques pour mieux les bâcher méchamment (et me faire bien rire, au passage).

Pour me déniaiser, si j’ose dire, j’ai jeté mon dévolu sur un titre récent qui me semblait intéressant, au-delà de son strict aspect yaoi. In the Walnut se situant dans le milieu de l’art, avec une prétention au réalisme, sans que la baise et/ou la romance soient les sujets exclusifs, je me suis dit bon, je vais bien voir. Mais alors le titre. In the Walnut. Sérieusement, un boys love qui s’appelle littéralement « dans la noix » , on peut légitimement attendre au pire. Heureusement, il n’en est rien, on mettra ça sur le compte d’une traduction malencontreuse. Ou alors juste de mon habitude de voir des doubles sens là où il n’y en a pas?

Le choix s’est révélé bon, puisque j’ai passé un agréable moment à lire In the Walnut, qui effectivement, donne un cadre yaoi à une histoire qui pourrait se passer avec n’importe quels personnages adultes. C’est là peut-être une preuve de maturité du genre, comme avec la littérature ou le cinéma : l’homosexualité n’est pas le sujet, mais une caractéristique des personnages. C’est une histoire dans le milieu de l’art, avec des héros gays, et des personnages secondaires gays ou pas, point. Comme l’auteure Toko Kawai l’a bien précisé dans une interview (lors de sa venue à Japan Expo 2011), l’art est sa passion, et elle a souhaité en faire le thème de ce manga pour en témoigner, et peut-être amener certains lecteurs (et lectrices) à découvrir ses peintres préférés. Le premier tome (oui, précision : bien qu’il ne porte aucun numéro, il s’agit bien du 1er tome d’une série en cours) est construit en 3 chapitres qui sont autant de tranches de vie distinctes, centrées autour d’une œuvre en particulier ou d’un artiste. Dans le 1er chapitre, il s’agit d’un peintre contemporain imaginaire ; mais ensuite, il est question de Paul Klee, particulièrement de la série des « anges » (à droite), puis de Gainsborough, le grand portraitiste anglais du 18ème siècle (à gauche). Choix que j’approuve, j’adore ces deux peintres. Chaque fois, un tableau ou un dessin est au centre de l’intrigue, et sans vous en dire plus, le personnage de Tanizaki, le galeriste faussaire, doit recourir à des moyens peu légaux pour dénouer une situation délicate. D’autres peintres sont évoqués dans le cours des intrigues, y compris dans le chapitre prequel My beautiful world (qui raconte la rencontre assez hot entre Tanizaki et Nakai), et Toko Kawai en donne la liste en fin de volume, avec une bibliographie, pour ceux qui voudrait aller plus loin. Bonne idée.

Un bémol toutefois, je trouve que si les personnages sont sympathiques et intéressants, ils manquent un peu d’épaisseur, enfin surtout Nakai, qui est à peine plus que le faire-valoir de Tanizaki – d’une certaine manière, il m’a fait penser à une version masculine de Hachiko dans Nana – gentil, rigolo, et un pois-chiche à la place de la cervelle. Le mec facile et qui ne pose pas de questions – à tel point que Tanizaki le manipule à volonté, jusqu’à en éprouver des remords. Bon, j’attends de voir au tome suivant si le personnage est un peu mieux mis en valeur.

J’ai trouvé le dessin assez classique, très (stéréo-)typé yaoi, mais clair et agréable à l’oeil. Peu de décors, sinon stylisés, l’attention se porte sur les visages, les expressions. J’ai appris dans l’interview que Toko Kawai réalise ses mangas 100% seule et à la main, sans assistants ni logiciels. A part les mains un peu trop longues et fines, et le cliché des mentons pointus, ça se laisse regarder. Finalement, In the Walnut est une bonne expérience, et sans aller jusqu’à dire que je suis resté bouleversé par une telle révélation, il marque d’une façon globalement positive ma première expérience de lecture d’un yaoi.     Corti, tu confonds peut-être avec « Le jeu du chat et de la souris », qui est un josei vu le mag de prépub. Mais on y découvre bien l’évolution d’une romance gay. Si tu cherches un autre BL qui ne parle pas que de « ça », je te conseillerais bien le manhwa Core Scramble, mon BL (voire manga/manhwa) préféré de l’année. Par contre, cela ne parlera pas de peinture, mais de SF.

    Il est vrai que le style graphique de Tôko Kawai est assez caractéristique du genre. Pour ma part, je préfère Naono Bohra (inutile de chercher, il n’y a quasiment rien de licencié), plus carré et pourtant très expressif. Pour le titre, je pense que In the Walnut n’est pas une erreur de traduction. Le manga s’appelle 胡桃の中 ou Kurumi no naka. Peut-être y a-t-il un clin d’oeil à la matière du cadre entourant la peinture, ou à des choses cachées dans une noix, ou au fait que les tableaux ne valent rien (mais en anglais, ce serait plutôt peanuts)… Ou probablement à autre chose, surtout si Kurumi a un autre sens que noix.

      le sens se trouve dans le manga : c’est la coquille de noix imaginaire qui renferme les sentiments de Tanizaki, et qui refuse de se laisser briser et révéler. c’est aussi le nom de la galerie d’art.

      dans un style plus adulte avec romance gay (enfin lesbienne en l’occurrence), j’ai bien aimé Blue, de Kiriko Nananan, dont je parlerai peut-être prochainement.

        Ha, Nananan *___* une de mes auteurs favorites. J’ai lu beaucoup de yaoi à une époque, mais plusieurs travers m’ont fatigué.

        Naono Bohra est en effet une des meilleures du genre. C’est très cul, très drôle et son dessin est vraiment de qualité. Surtout ses mecs sont virils. D’ailleurs, si le yaoi s’adresse d’abords à un public féminin, Bohra, par son graphisme réaliste et ses histoires crues sort des sentiers battues.

        Une des raisons principales qui m’a fait abandonné la lecture du yaoi est la faiblesse narrative et surtout l’utilisation de stéréotype à tour de bras avec des perso masculins prévisibles et surtout… avec une psychologie quand même très féminine. C’est un peu comme les romans à l’eau de rose ou la mauvaise fantasy. Quand tu connais les ficelles, tu vois tout venir à des kilomètres.

        Et j’aime trop être surprise pour m’en contenter :)
        Mais chuis une grenouille râleuse, et tu le sais !

        Je te conseille quand même « Le jeu du chat et de la souris » et, avec un graphisme assez barré, « Beautiful World » de Yamada Naito.

    À première vue, je pensais c’était toi qui avait fait le gribouillis à droite. Je m’étais dit « franchement quand on dessine aussi mal, mieux vaut prendre n’importe quelle image sur google »…Mais en fait c’est d’un pro…ok…

    Sinon j’ai jamais lu de Yaoi, j’avoue.

      s’agissant du gribouillis, terme dont je te laisse la paternité, il s’agit d’un dessin tiré d’une série d’autres sur le même thème : les anges, réalisés par Paul Klee au seuil de sa mort (très malade, et menacé par les nazis qui en font le principal tenant de ce qu’ils appellent l’art dégénéré… il est finalement décédé en 1940 en Suisse). c’est précisément leur extrême simplicité (et paradoxalement, leur raffinement, comme de la calligraphie) qui les met au centre de l’intrigue. un enfant essaie de les reproduire sans y arriver, et Tanizaki lui fera un « faux » ange signé Klee pour lui redonner espoir.
      Paul Klee est non seulement un artiste passionnant, mais en plus un des plus importants théoriciens et enseignants de l’art durant les années 1920 à 1940. il a fondé notamment l’école du Bauhaus, avec Kandinsky et Gropius, première école pluridisciplinaire d’arts plastiques, dont l’influence se fait encore fortement ressentir aujourd’hui (architecture, design, photographie, cinéma, danse, et bien sûr peinture, sculpture et dessin).

    Article très intéressant pour un grand fan de Yaoi, un compte-rendu de la découverte de ce genre est toujours assez instructif. Tu as effectivement fait le bon choix pour un premier Yaoi, les oeuvres de Toko Kawai, notamment In The Walnut étant très fines et plutôt originales.
    Si tu veux continuer dans le Boy’s Love, je te conseille les titres de Rihito Takarai (Seven Days, Seule la fleur sait chez Taifu Comics) qui, pour le coup, sont beaucoup plus tournées vers la romance mais qui sont d’une rare beauté !

    J’ai adoré certains titres de Toko Kawai pour leur légereté, puis d’autres m’ont déçus, du coup je ne savais plus trop que faire face à ce titre qui m’attirais par rapport à son contexte, mais vu la critique que tu en fais, je pense me laisser tenter un de ces 4 !

    Des yaoi qui racontent des histoires avec des protagonistes masculins, il y en a hélas très peu =/ Mais si tu veux lire un monument du genre, tu a « le jeu du chat et de la souris » qu’il est d’ailleurs difficile de considérer comme un yaoi au final v_v;
