Classiques pour tous?
Est-il nécessaire de vous proposer un synopsis de ces deux grands classiques, lectures souvent obligatoires au collège ou au lycée, et qui font partie de notre patrimoine au même titre que Madame Bovary ou Le Père Goriot ? Ah, que n’avons-nous pas transpiré à les étudier, en extraits ou en intégrale, à un âge ou même Camus et Malraux nous paraissaient préhistoriques, et où la simple idée de nous voir imposer nos choix de lecture était en soi le meilleur moyen de nous en dégoûter. Même votre serviteur, qui passait des heures à lire dans sa chambre, de tout pourvu que ce ne soit pas au programme, en avait conçu un rejet absolu. Prémonitoire, j’avais fait un esclandre en cours de français (où j’obtenais mes meilleures notes), à l’occasion d’un exposé sur la bande dessinée qui avait exaspéré ma prof et emmerdé mes camarades (j’étais déjà beaucoup trop long), en proclamant du haut de mes 14 ans « votre Stendhal, là, je le lirai quand il sera adapté en BD ! » Plus de 25 ans après, ce n’est pas sans un une certaine jubilation que je repense à ce petit con qui croyait tout savoir, et qui toute prétention mise à part, avait malgré tout raison, puisqu’enfin, la prédiction s’est réalisée.

La surprise, c’est que c’est à ma récente passion pour le manga que je dois cette redécouverte. C’est un éditeur japonais, East Press, qui a commencé il y a quelques années cette collection, Manga de Dokuha, littéralement « lire grâce au manga », consistant à proposer au lecteur de manga des adaptations dessinées des grands classiques de la littérature (Dante, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Tolstoï…) y compris japonaise (Akutagawa, Soseki), et de l’histoire des idées (Confucius, Machiavel, Darwin, Freud…). L’originalité de ce projet réside notamment dans le mode de production : chaque volume est le produit d’un studio, Variety Art Works, collectif de mangakas dont aucun nom n’est mis en avant. La distribution est également inhabituelle (en tous cas pour nous, lecteurs occidentaux) : les volumes sont principalement vendus en combini, principalement du réseau 7 Eleven (et également en ligne, chez ebookjapan.jp). L’initiative remporte assez de succès pour se poursuivre, d’autres titres sont attendus, mais reste modeste : les ventes plafonnent à une moyenne de 35.000 exemplaires, le pic des 45.000 ventes ayant été atteint avec l’adaptation de… Mein Kampf (édition qui ne risque pas de venir chez nous).

En France, c’est Soleil qui a obtenu la licence, et la publication en ballon d’essai du Capital, de Marx & Engels, a reçu un accueil suffisamment favorable pour que le Manifeste du Parti Communiste soit en cours de traduction. Je dois ce mini-scoop à une conversation fortuite, chez mon libraire habituel, avec un commercial de chez Hachette, qui distribue Soleil et Delcourt, entre autres. Sortis ce mois de mai 2011, Le Rouge Et Le Noir, et les Misérables, sont les deux premiers titres littéraires de cette collection « classiques » de chez Soleil. Je n’ai pas d’infos, par-contre, sur les prochaines parutions « littéraires ». Personnellement je serais assez tenté par des traductions de Dr Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, La Guerre Des Mondes et Moby Dick. Si par un hasard hautement improbable un responsable de Soleil lisait ces lignes…

Ce que j’en pense :
Autant le dire tout de suite : les deux volumes ne sont pas de la même qualité. Hélas. Cela se voit d’ailleurs dès la couverture.

Le Rouge Et Le Noir a été une excellente surprise. Allez, je vais vous faire une fleur : un mini synopsis. L’histoire se situe en 1830. Julien Sorel n’est qu’un modeste fils de charpentier, dans une petite ville du Doubs, mais il s’élève progressivement au-dessus de sa condition grâce à ses études, et aussi, ce dont il ne prend conscience que progressivement, grâce à son charme et à sa personnalité. Dévoré d’ambition, manipulateur (et aussi manipulé) il franchit les étapes une à une : précepteur dans une famille bourgeoise, séminariste à Besançon, secrétaire particulier d’un aristocrate à Paris, officier dans l’armée… jusqu’à sa chute.

Le Rouge Et Le Noir se constitue de deux parties, chacune centrée sur la relation de Sorel avec une femme : Madame de Renal d’abord, Mathilde de la Mole ensuite. Le Rouge Et Le Noir est donc à la fois un roman social et historique (chronique de la Restauration monarchique), un roman d’amour (Julien Sorel dans les affres de la passion pour les deux femmes) et un roman psychologique (l’histoire est racontée à travers les pensées des principaux protagonistes). C’est un roman à la fois très beau (l’amour qui transcende tout, et qui naît là où on ne l’attend pas) et très pessimiste. Car comme Stendhal le dit à travers Sorel, à l’approche du dénouement : « J’ai aimé la vérité… Où est-elle ?… Partout hypocrisie, ou du moins charlatanisme, même chez les plus vertueux, même chez les plus grands » ; et ses lèvres prirent l’expression du dégoût… « Non, l’homme ne peut pas se fier à l’homme. »

L’adaptation manga est réussie. Bien sûr, comme Soleil le rappelle en frontispice, il ne faut pas en attendre un substitut du texte original (même si le gamin de 14 ans en moi est tenté de le croire), et le but est d’inciter à redécouvrir le roman. Je dois admettre que de ce point de vue, l’objectif est atteint : l’envie de me racheter le livre de Stendhal me démange plutôt. La raison de cette réussite se situe, je pense, dans le traitement très shojo de l’histoire de Julien Sorel. En mettant l’accent sur les passions amoureuses, au détriment de l’aspect politique et social, et en prenant même des libertés avec le texte (libertés qui sont signalées en note par l’éditeur), le manga est finalement très cohérent, et ne souffre pas de sa réduction à 200 pages dessinées. Le dessin, bien que relativement impersonnel, est très agréable, avec un soin accordé aux détails, aux décors, aux visages. Les affres de la passion sont traitées à travers les codes du shojo, sans exagération, et j’ai été surpris de tourner les pages avec plaisir.

Je ne peux, malheureusement, pas en dire autant des Misérables. Là, je serai très court : si Le Rouge Et Le Noir bénéficie d’un traitement de qualité, l’adaptation de l’oeuvre de Hugo m’est franchement apparue comme bâclée, aussi bien dans la mise en scène que dans le dessin (voir plus bas). Il est vrai qu’une adaptation des Misérables ressemble à la quadrature du cercle : alors que le Le Rouge Et Le Noir, centré sur quelques personnages et sur leurs émotions, se prête assez bien à l’adaptation dessinée, pour l’oeuvre d’Hugo par-contre, trop d’évènements, de rebondissements, de personnages, auraient nécessité au moins deux volumes. Mais surtout, le dessin laisse à désirer. Certains personnages et décors sont tout simplement indignes. D’une page à l’autre, d’une case à l’autre, parfois dans une même case, le trait hésite entre le correct et le grossier, et j’en ai été grandement agacé. Comme je le dis plus haut, même la comparaison entre les couvertures des deux mangas le prouve. Hugo ne méritait pas ça. Et si je ne l’avais pas déjà lu, le résultat serait sans appel : aucune envie d’aller au texte original.

En conclusion :
La parution simultanée de ces deux volumes, probablement choisis par Soleil en raison de leur popularité chez nous, illustre les qualités et les limites d’une telle entreprise. Adapter en manga des textes aussi imposants, dans tous les sens du terme, nécessite un parti-pris artistique, quitte à « trahir » gentiment l’original. C’est ce que réussit très bien à faire Le Rouge Et Le Noir, et ce que ne parvient pas à réaliser Les Misérables. En adoptant discrètement les codes du shojo, et en apportant un soin approprié à la réalisation technique et graphique, Le Rouge Et Le Noir réussit à intéresser le newbie, et je le conseille à tous, intéressés ou non par les classiques littéraires : le résultat va bien au-delà d’une simple adaptation, et propose un vrai plaisir de lecture. Comme il y a fort à parier que de telles variations de qualité se retrouvent parmi tous les autres titres du catalogue Manga de Dokuha, j’espère que Soleil saura faire un tri a priori, et ne se contentera pas de miser sur la notoriété de l’oeuvre originale. En attendant, lisez le Capital et le Rouge et le Noir. Après, vous faites ce que vous voulez, bien sûr.

    Tiens, je connaissais pas du tout le concept. Enfin personnellement, ce genre de réécriture m’intéresse pas vraiment car ça reste forcément très fidèle à l’œuvre originale. J’imagine l’intérêt au Japon où l’on aborde nos classiques via la traduction, beaucoup moins dans nos contrées. Les gens qui tiennent absolument à avoir une culture littéraire passeront, je l’espère, par les œuvres originales. Parce que ça me fait mal quelque part, l’idée d’apprendre notre littérature via des adaptations manga. Condenser les Misérables en 200 pages, bonjour les dégâts. Si c’était une réinterprétation genre Gankutsuou ça passerait encore.

      Je crois qu’il faut resituer la chose dans le contexte, comme tu le dis, où le manga est au Japon un mode de diffusion et de démocratisation de toutes sortes d’informations. Stendhal et Hugo ne font pas partie de la culture japonaise. La collection que lance Soleil est un essai, ça marchera ou pas. Pour ma part, la curiosité l’emporte. Après, j’ai dis ce que je pensais du résultat.

    Décidément, il s’agit d’une initiative – quoiqu’intéressante – à laquelle je n’adhère pas. J’avais failli me laisser tenter par Le Capital, mais le peu que j’en ai lu ne m’a finalement pas inspiré.

    Ce n’est pas que je sois contre les classiques, mais je trouve le concept trop impersonnel à mon goût. Le simple fait que la couverture indique un studio et non un artiste me dérange, ne serait-ce car je ne sais pas qui a écrit l’oeuvre (hormis l’auteur du roman), si je le connais, si j’apprécie son travail, etc…

    Je n’ai rien contre les adaptations de roman classique, plus ou moins libres. J’ai lu L’Investiture des Dieux de Ryu Fujisaki, Au Bord de l’Eau de Mistuteru Yokoyama, Heidi de Yumiko Igarashi ; là, j’adorerais qu’un éditeur propose Anne of Green Gables de Yumiko Igarashi, Les Enfants Terribles de Moto Hagio, Crimes et Châtiments de Osamu Tezuka, ou même – soyons fou – La Romance des Trois Royaumes de Mitsuteru Yokoyama. Et que dire des Trois Mousquetaires revisité par Monkey Punch, l’auteur de Lupin III ?
    Mais ces productions East Press, trop impersonnelles, ne m’intéressent décidément pas…

      Le Capital est tellement une oeuvre à part que ça vaut le coup de le lire ainsi. Et je l’ai trouvé très pédagogique.
      Pour les oeuvres que tu cites, je suis évidemment d’accord : mais ce n’est pas comparable. Cette collection n’est pas signée d’un auteur, mais d’un studio.

    Pas plus tard qu’avant-hier je suis tombée sur Le Rouge et le Noir au rayon manga de la FNAC et ça m’a bien fait rigoler ; si on m’avait dit un jour qu’un tel exploit serait possible je crois que je me serais foutu de sa gueule. Comme je n’ai jamais lu le roman originel (pour être franche je l’ai eu entre les mains…et je n’ai jamais dépassé la première ligne, pareil pour le Père Goriot, j’ai préféré me rabattre sur Germinal qui était plus intéressant) j’ai hésité un moment en me disant que c’était peut-être l’occasion d’enfin lire du Stendhal sans me suicider d’ennui et de lassitude. Au final, ça donne quoi ? C’est digeste, indigeste ? Court, long ? Est-ce que les libertés prises pour ce nouveau support apportent quelque chose ?
    (J’ai hâte que l’Innommable de Beckett sorte en manga dis donc, ça ferait une merveilleuse arme de destruction massive :p)

      Oui le Rouge et le Noir manga est lisible, digeste, et plutôt court : 200 pages. Comme je le dis plus haut, il y a des libertés prises avec l’intrigue, mais peu nombreuses, et elles vont dans le sens d’une « shojoïsation », en se concentrant sur les histoires d’amour. Evidemment, ce n’est pas complètement transcendant, et le trait reste assez mainstream, manquant de personnalité ; mais ça se laisse très bien lire à mon avis. Disons que c’est une intéressante curiosité, pas un must have. Et puis ça m’a réconcilié avec Stendhal, me redonnant envie de le lire. C’est le but principal il me semble.
      Les misérables, je n’ajouterais rien… c’est juste un fail.

        Hum, tes indications sont un peu vagues à mon goût X). Je ne me sens pas beaucoup plus avancée qu’avant mais merci quand même, si je retourne à la FNAC et que j’ai plus de temps, je lirais le début du manga comme ça je serais définitivement fixée. Et pour les Misérables j’ai compris le message, vaut mieux s’abstenir.

    Article courageux il faut croire, au vu des commentaires. J’ai tendance à voir dans cette initiative quelque chose de pernicieux, comme si l’on partait du principe que je ne lirai pas ces classiques mais qu’on m’en donnait la version manga sur-mesure. Du coup l’envie de tenter les romans est la plus forte…mais ton article et sa bonne saveur biographique me donne envie de mettre la main sur Le rouge et le noir en manga.

    Ah, Le Rouge et le Noir… Si j’avais trouvé l’histoire intéressante, le roman avait été trop long pour que je l’apprécie… Et je dois avouer que si j’ai été intrigué par la bd, ayant été vacciné, je ne suis pas aller plus loin que l’ouvrir à une page au hasard puis la refermer sans la lire.
    Quant aux Misérables, c’est marrant, je viens juste de recommencer la lecture de cette oeuvre (j’en avais lu un gros morceau sans pouvoir la finir, magie des lectures obligatoires au lycée!).
    Je trouve l’initiative louable sinon, qui sait, peut-être mènera-t’elle quelques courageux et/ou curieux à lire les bouquins!

    Je suis d’accord sur la différence de qualité entre les deux volumes, même si je ne serais pas aussi critique pour « Les Misérables ». Il est vrai que le dessin n’a pas le même sens du détail (je me suis demandée si ce n’était pas voulu d’ailleurs) et que l’histoire va extrêmement vite, sans beaucoup d’approfondissement. D’un autre côté, c’est une oeuvre qui a déjà été adaptée en film sans que le résultat ne soit forcément raté, donc une « réduction » doit être possible. Peut-être les auteurs auraient-ils dû plus se focaliser sur certaines idées du roman, quitte à négliger une partie des évènements (même si c’est déjà le cas évidemment). Bref… Hier, un des représentants de Soleil a précisé qu’ils travaillent actuellement sur « A la recherche du temps perdu » et « Guerre et Paix ».

    Il n’y qu’à voir ce qu’il est advenu de la production de manga au Japon, et des commentaires laissés sur ton blog, pour découvrir que la situation inverse à ce qu’espérait Tezuka s’est passée. Le pauvre se retournerait dans sa tombe.

    On fait des films ou des mangas pour tout et n’importe quoi. Inutile de réfléchir à l’oeuvre de Gainsbourg, il n’y qu’à voir le film ! Inutile de lire un des chefs d’oeuvres de la littérature romantique du 19ième siècle, puisque « le rouge et le noir » a été adapté en manga ! Les ignorants lobotomisés par la sous culture japonaise se permettent même de donner leur avis sur le monument littéraire de Stendhal : « long, ennuyeux, lassant ».

    Adapter un livre, une oeuvre littéraire est un pari énormément risqué. Même le sensei s’y est cassé les dents avec sa « légende de songoku » qui n’a que très peu d’intérêt à côte de la merveille qu’est le roman « le voyage en occident » (voltaire, Dumas et Matt Groening y sont mélangés avec une avance de plusieurs siècles).

    Le cliché selon lequel les mangas et l’animation japonaise sont infantilisant et stupides ont de beaux jours devant eux.
