1984. Non, ce n’est pas un délire à la George Orwell, c’est l’année où le rock devint ma passion. J’avais 14 ans, et j’y avais déjà goûté (entre autres choses) l’année précédente, lors de mon premier séjour en Angleterre, dans une petite ville moisie où il n’y avait rien d’autre à faire (entre autres choses!) que de traîner dans la boutique de disques locale.
1984 : à la télévision française, une révolution : sur une chaîne de service public, dans une émission culturelle, on allait voir des seins nus. Je ne sais pas si vous vous rendez compte, ce que cela représentait comme révolution dans les moeurs, surtout pour un ado particulièrement ignorant et curieux de la chose. Du rock et des femmes nues : c’est que promettait la nouvelle émission des Enfants du Rock, Sex Machine, et la promesse était tenue (surtout pour le rock. pour les femmes nues, Canal Plus allait faire beaucoup plus…).
(hum : à cause d’Univers Sale, il faut cliquer deux fois sur le lien pour voir la vidéo, sur Youtube directement.

Mais passé l’effet de surprise (et la relative frustration de ne voir pas autant de choses qu’espéré), le vrai choc, ce fut pour moi Rockline, autre émission des Enfants du Rock, présentée par le mythique (je l’ignorais alors) Bernard Lenoir, le premier type qui avait diffusé des titres de Joy Division en France, sur la défunte Radio 7. Et ça donnait çà :
Non seulement j’apprenais que le rock était une culture, mais aussi que c’était une contre-culture, à une époque où l’avenir nous paraissait aussi froid et incertain qu’il est réellement advenu… Et puis, c’était la découverte d’un lieu imaginaire et merveilleux, effrayant et attirant : Londres, la capitale où les Bowie, Sex Pistols, Cure et New Order existaient pour de vrai. Enfin, surtout, c’était une révélation d’ordre strictement musical : en 1984, il existait un groupe totalement inconnu en France, qui faisait une musique qui collait totalement à l’époque : froide et sexy, grise et dansante, punk et électronique : New Order. Le générique de Rockline, c’était leur titre sorti en 1983, Confusion, le bien nommé. Il me fallait ce disque. Mais où et comment le trouver? Je rappelle que je n’avais que 14 ans, qu’il n’y avait pas d’internet pour commander des disques à distance et que le CD n’existait qu’à l’état de prototype.
Il aura fallu attendre le lycée, pour que le newbie adolescent (photos ci-contre) rencontre les bonnes personnes qui allaient lui permettre d’assouvir sa passion. Alors que ses congénères ne juraient que par les daubes musicales (que je ne nommerais pas, pour ne froisser personne, notamment les fans de Genesis, Dire Straits et U2) diffusées par des radios déjà insupportables, le newbie reconnut ses semblables grâce à ces détails significatifs : comme lui, ils écoutaient des trucs bizarres sur leur walk-man, ils séchaient le sport, et ils lisaient d’autres livres que ceux que la prof de français leur imposait.
C’est alors que débuta le trafic des cassettes enregistrées, et les premiers aller-retours à la Fnac Montparnasse, pour piller les rayons de maxi 45 tours et autres 33 tours. Le graal, c’était de posséder une platine double-cassette, pour recopier les cassettes des camarades. Le son était abominablement pourrave, mais c’était le seul moyen de se procurer les enregistrements de nos rêves…
Et j’acquis le graal, ce maxi 45 tours (que j’ai encore, cf. ci-dessus) de Confusion, qui allait en précéder bien d’autres : Blue Monday, The Perfect Kiss, State Of The Nation, True Faith… Pour bien comprendre la fascination qu’exerçait un groupe comme New Order sur notre pauvre bande de boutonneux timides et mal dans notre peau, il faut en écouter la musique, simple et dansante, à des années-lumières du clinquant que nous imposaient les années 80 (appelées les « années fric »), une musique faite par des gens qui nous ressemblaient, qui refusaient le star-system, et qui parlaient de choses que nous ressentions : la solitude, la timidité, l’amitié, l’art, l’adolescence.
Le point culminant, ce fut le premier concert que je fus autorisé à aller voir seul, enfin, avec des potes mais sans adultes, à 17 ans, à Paris, la Mutualité ! Il fallait prendre le train, presque une heure, le métro, faire la queue, attendre et attendre, l’excitation montait… Curieusement, je ne me souviens plus trop du concert lui-même, mais plutôt de la relative déception que j’en conçus au retour. La boucle était bouclée, j’avais enfin vu en vrai les idoles de mes 14/15/16 ans, mais j’en avais 17, et je commençais à m’ouvrir à d’autres choses… New Order, ce fut un rite initiatique, un moment de ma vie, le point d’entrée dans ma nouvelle passion, que je n’ai pas abandonnée depuis : la musique. New Order, ce fut le commencement de ce nouveau désordre, que je continue de rechercher, disque après disque. Encore aujourd’hui.
