« Whilhelm Endre, un homme d’affaires autrichien, entreprend de retrouver l’Atlantide. Mais il se fait assassiner dans d’étranges circonstances. Quelques jours plus tard, Yuli, sa fille, se rend à Tokyo avec pour mission de trouver Iriya, un ancien archéologue reconverti en antiquaire. Avec l’aide de ce dernier, elle compte bien accomplir la dernière volonté de son père : retrouver le contient perdu ! »
Ce que j’en pense :
Déjà le tome 4, et une histoire passionnante, inhabituelle pour un manga : la recherche de l’Atlantide, par un archéologue japonais et sa jolie partenaire, entre la Turquie, la Grèce, l’Italie, la Croatie, le Japon, et plein de références à des mythes célèbres et des récits mêlant le réel et l’imaginaire… (cf. Homère, Platon, Solon, Marco Polo…)
Le dessinateur, Osamu Uoto, est peu connu, il a surtout travaillé dans le monde du jeu vidéo ; son style est intéressant, un peu déroutant, avec des décors réalistes et très soignés, et un chara design particulier, certains personnages sont réalistes d’autres pas, genre « gros nez » à la Tezuka. Mais ça n’est pas pour me déplaire.
Le scénariste est apparemment inconnu – en fait, sous le pseudo de Garaku Toshusai se cache en réalité Takashi Nagasaki, crédité comme co-auteur sur les séries d’Urasawa, 20th Century Boys et Pluto. Je comprends mieux la virtuosité du scénar, et cette manie de multiplier les fausses pistes pour mieux nous égarer en chemin.
L’histoire fait la part belle au mystère, peu d’action mais du suspense et des rebondissements, qui peuvent parfois évoquer du Indiana Jones (en moins secoué, quand même). la quête de l’Atlantide s’apparente à un jeu de piste ludique, une sorte de chasse au trésor contrariée par une mystérieuse secte qui n’hésite pas à tuer pour préserver le secret…
Elle est aussi un prétexte à multiplier des histoires annexes, un peu à la Ikigami, où le couple Iriya/Yuli rencontre des personnages secondaires dont ils vont changer la vie.
Iriya est un jeune archéologue fougueux, imaginatif et bougon, pas tellement prêt à s’embarrasser d’une jeune femme dans ses aventures. Il va quand même peu à peu succomber au charme (platoniquement pour l’instant) de Yuli, la jolie austro-japonaise héritière des recherches de son père assassiné. Ils sont entourés de personnages secondaires récurrents, comme la maman d’Iriya, une envahissante sexagénaire qui se mêle des recherches de son fils, et Rui, un petit garçon de 5 ans rondouillard et non moins envahissant, qui est doté d’un langage et d’une culture d’adulte et qui voue à Iirya un véritable culte.
Le tout forme un manga très divertissant, avec ce qu’il faut de thriller, d’humour, d’humanité, de dépaysement, et, une fois n’est pas coutume, de passages franchement éducatifs, sur la culture et l’histoire japonaise, mais aussi sur les cultures et l’histoire des pays méditerranéens. Sans jamais être prise de tête. Un manga pour jeunes et moins jeunes, où chacun trouvera sa part.
