Cette semaine, en regardant Appleseed, l’OAV de 1988 d’après le manga de Masamune Shirow, je me suis fait la réflexion que, franchement, Appleseed n’avait pas eu la même chance que Ghost In The Shell. En effet, que ce soit avec cette sympathique OAV vintage, ou avec les deux films trop high-tech de la mort qui bute sortis vingt ans plus tard, Appleseed n’a toujours pas trouvé son Mamoru Oshii. En fait, tout s’est passé comme si l’amélioration progressive des technologies de l’animation servait de cache-misère au manque d’idées des réalisateurs qui se sont emparés de l’oeuvre de Masamune Shirow. Du coup, en attendant un mieux improbable, il faut se contenter d’une OAV et de deux navets.
Au début, c’était un univers de papier…
Appleseed, pour moi, c’est une découverte récente. Cinq tomes grand format parus chez Glénat en sens de lecture français, le tout pour un poids assez conséquent. Pas le genre de manga qu’on peut sortir de la poche arrière droite de son jeans, quand on attend son bus par exemple (ou qu’on lit en marchant – c’est une habitude dont je n’arrive pas à me défaire). Rappelons les faits.
Appleseed est une monumentale série de mangas que Masamune Shirow a écrits et dessinés entre 1985 et 1989, publiés en France entre 1994 et 1996 (et difficiles à trouver – merci ma médiathèque!). Comme Ghost in The Shell, son oeuvre la plus connue, elle se situe dans un univers d’anticipation souvent qualifié de cyberpunk, d’une parfaite cohérence et d’une incroyable profondeur.
Au 22ème siècle, la Terre se remet à peine d’une effroyable guerre mondiale, qui a redessiné les continents et d’où émerge Olympus, une cité idéale fondée par des scientifiques au milieu de l’océan, telle la mythique Atlantide. Olympus n’est pas seulement une ville, elle abrite surtout le projet Appleseed, piloté par un super-ordinateur, du nom de Gaïa. Appleseed a pour objet de ramener la paix sur la Terre, en faisant vivre les humains (violents par nature) au milieu d’une société encadrée par les bioroïdes, des humains clonés et artificiellement modifiés pour être toujours pacifiques. Les héros de l’histoire, vétérans survivants de la guerre mondiale, sont Deunan Knut (une humaine) et Briareos Hecatonchires (un humain-cyborg au oreilles de lapin). Ils viennent d’arriver à Olympus, et sont aussitôt enrôlés dans l’unité S.W.A.T, une police d’élite militarisée et équipée de méchas, les landmates. Tout au long des cinq volumes de l’édition française, on suit leurs aventures dans un monde apparemment idéal, mais en proie à d’incessantes attaques de terroristes, de services secrets ennemis, et autres factions pros ou anti-bioroïdes. Certains humains, en effet, bien que profitant du contexte idyllique d’Olympus, ne supportent pas l’idée de côtoyer des clones, et de vivre dans une cité dirigée par un ordinateur.
Derrière cette histoire complexe, mêlant action, combats, introspection et même un peu de romance et d’érotisme, Masamune Shirow a construit une toile de fond historique, politique et sociale parfaitement cohérente. Il en donne les clés au fil des chapitres, par des notes et des « documents » hors textes, pour faire plus vrai. Il a également défini une technologie très fouillée, au design unique, dont les détails sont présentés de la même manière, avec moult schémas, notices d’utilisation, notes en bas de page, etc.
Le dessin de Shirow est à l’aune de son scénario : très (trop?) fouillé, fourmillant de détails en arrière-plan, même lors des scènes d’action et de combat, tout en réalisant le tour de force de ne pas perdre son caractère dynamique. Par moments, il donne tout de même l’impression d’être dans un trip de dessinateur virtuose, au risque de perdre l’attention du lecteur, dont l’oeil est attiré par trop de choses à la fois. Mais alors, quel talent d’illustrateur ! Comment ne pas admirer justement, le carénage de ses méchas, la précision des décors, et la plastique parfaite de ses héroïnes féminines, non seulement de l’athlétique Deunan, mais aussi de la douce Hitomi (voir la planche ci-contre) ?
Malgré les défauts de ses qualités, Appleseed, le manga de Shirow est une oeuvre passionnante, que j’ai dévoré, et que j’ai même préférée à son oeuvre pourtant plus connue, Ghost in the Shell. Il fallait donc que je me plonge ensuite dans les adaptations en anime, soit l’OAV de 1988, puis les deux films de 2005 et 2007. Mais là, par-contre, il faut le dire : ils n’arrivent pas à la cheville de ce que Mamoru Oshii a accompli avec les deux films de Ghost in the Shell, ni des séries Stand Alone Complex, d’ailleurs. Cruelle déception.
Une OAV et deux navets
L’OAV de 1988, sobrement intitulée Appleseed, a au moins un mérite : son script est parfaitement respectueux de l’oeuvre originale. Il faut tout de même préciser que Shirow a refusé de participer à sa réalisation. Quand je l’ai regardée, cette semaine, j’ai été pris dès les premières secondes par deux sentiments contradictoires : d’un côté, l’inquiétude devant une réalisation plutôt cheap, c’est-à-dire une animation saccadée, des dessins schématiques, un chara design ordinaire et une musique insupportable (genre easy-listening au rabais). De l’autre, le soulagement de découvrir une histoire policière de bon aloi (flics contre terroristes), au suspense pas mal dosé, même si la simplification volontaire de l’intrigue rend parfois difficile à comprendre certains éléments spécifiques de l’univers Appleseed.
Notamment, le personnage d’Athena, central dans le manga, est juste survolé, et on ne comprend pas trop son véritable rôle, flic en chef ou scientifique ou maire d’Olympus ou quoi ou qu’est-ce? C’est pas mieux avec Hitomi, qui devient ici une sympathique potiche un peu ridicule, à la limite du boulet. La bonne idée, c’est le personnage de Calon, un flic qui a perdu ses idéaux et dont la révolte permet d’esquisser de façon simple et compréhensible les contradictions morales et idéologiques de la cité idéale Olympus. Au moins, au niveau de l’histoire, ça se tient. Et en à peine une heure, générique compris, c’est plutôt bien amené.
Les deux films, respectivement intitulés Appleseed (2005) et Appleseed Ex Machina (2007), c’est exactement le contraire. Voilà deux blockbusters aux budgets et donc aux moyens technologiques colossaux, qui viennent vingt ans après le manga et (ce n’est pas neutre) juste après les deux films d’Oshii, Ghost in the Shell (1995) et Innocence (2004). La comparaison est inévitable.
Alors oui, si on ne déteste pas l’animation de synthèse en pure 3D, et qu’on a apprécié les Final Fantasy et autres Vexille, on doit admettre que les deux Appleseed ont des arguments solides à faire valoir. Certaines scènes, notamment les survols de la cité d’Olympus, sont d’une beauté à couper le souffle. D’une façon générale, dès qu’on a une scène d’ensemble, avec assez de profondeur de champ, c’est bluffant. Personnellement, je n’ai été qu’admiratif devant cet aspect de la réalisation, en songeant à ce que permet enfin la technologie en matière de reconstitution d’univers visuels. Mais c’est bien là le problème. Je n’ai été qu’admiratif. A aucun moment, je n’ai vibré, ni souri, ni été ému par Appleseed & Ex Machina. « Ex Machina », voilà bien d’ailleurs comment les résumer : des grosses machines, mais qui n’ont pas de ghost…
Car passé l’effet de surprise (très bonne scène de guérilla urbaine dans le premier film), tout se gâte dès que la « caméra » se rapproche des personnages. Et là, c’est la consternation. Même s’il était illusoire de souhaiter retrouver le style et le charme du trait fouillis et foutraque de Shirow (mais au moins, l’OAV avait le mérite de respecter le design original), j’ai été choqué de voir à quel point le personnage de Deunan avait été dénaturé. Et pas seulement physiquement. Disparue, la bimbo caractérielle et rigolote, dont les grimaces, les yeux pétillants et les répliques cinglantes attiraient l’oeil de case en case. A la place, une sorte de poupée fragile à la peau lisse comme de la faïence (pour ne pas dire comme du plastique), totalement inexpressive et même carrément tête-à-claques. Briareos, lui, est moins massacré (au moins, il a la chance de n’avoir pas de visage, il est déjà en plastique…) mais moralement, c’est pas loin d’être devenu une fiotte. Les doutes existentiels, sur le papier, c’est plus séduisant que la testostérone, mais quand ça dénature un personnage, je ne vois plus l’intérêt.
L’histoire, bon ben l’histoire… Ce n’est plus ça non plus, et on voit bien que le réalisateur a voulu nous refaire le coup du ghost in the shell, pardon, in the machine, mais bon, là aussi c’est bien laborieux… Les scènes d’action sont bien faites, tellement que je me suis surpris à les attendre à chaque baisse de rythme (moi qui ne suis pas un gros fan de baston, en plus). Le comble du ridicule est selon moi atteint avec le second opus, Ex Machina, dont l’histoire cousue de fil blanc n’est que le prétexte à une succession de scènes repompées ailleurs, de Matrix aux films de John Woo (crédité au générique, d’ailleurs) en passant par le Retour du Jedi (la scène de poursuite dans les tuyaux du genre de vaisseau spatial géant à la fin, si c’est pas entièrement copié, je ne comprends plus rien).
Bref, si l’OAV avait le mérite de la simplicité et de l’efficacité (en dépit d’un manque criant de moyens), les films entrent pour moi dans la catégorie des gros navets, boursouflés, creux, et dont il ne reste rien à la fin, même pas des miettes de pop-corn au fond du paquet en quittant la salle de cinoche. Burp (pardon).
Appleseed : vraiment inadaptable?
La question se pose donc devant la semi-réussite de l’OAV et les gros échecs des films : le manga Appleseed est-il adaptable?
Non, si on considère que la complexité du dessin et de l’intrigue ne peut qu’être simplifiée et donc trahie, au risque inévitable de perdre l’esprit et la lettre de l’original. Si c’est pour un tel résultat, autant laisser l’oeuvre où elle est, et ne pas prétendre la retranscrire. Après tout, la même équipe des films a réalisé Vexille, qui sans être un chef d’oeuvre a de réelles qualités, et une histoire originale.
Oui, si la finalité d’une adaptation ne se résume pas à un mieux-disant technologique, et si un réalisateur doté d’une véritable vision artistique s’en empare. Au risque assumé d’en faire sa propre chose. C’est ce qu’a su faire Mamoru Oshii avec Ghost in the Shell, à tel point que l’on peut se demander si le résultat n’est pas plus du Oshii que du Shirow. Je l’ai dit à de nombreuses reprises et je le répète ici, pour moi, rien ne remplace une bonne histoire et une authentique vision artistique. Et surtout pas les moyens techniques, ni même les bonnes intentions.
Au fait quequ’un a des nouvelles de Masamune Shirow? J’ai eu beau chercher, depuis au moins cinq ans il n’y a rien eu de notable. A part des sortes d’art-books et de calendriers à forte connotation hentai… Bon, au moins, si ça l’amuse, et que ça peut nous régaler les yeux… Après tout, c’est un dessinateur hors pair, et quel mâle normalement constitué n’a pas un peu bavé devant Deunan et Hitomi, hein, dites moi?
Cinq ans ? Alors c’est toi qui va m’apprendre quelque chose parce que pour moi, il n’a rien fait de bien depuis plus de dix ans. Il y aurait bien la sortie de GITS 1.5 : Human-Error Processor qui date de 2003 si seulement les nouvelles qu’il utilise ne dataient pas, elles, au plus tard, de 1996.
La première OAV d’Appleseed est on ne peut plus moyenne. Elle s’est noyée totalement dans les productions du même genre qui fleurissaient alors.
Oui, bon, huit ans, c’est plus exact que « au moins cinq ans », je te le concède, si on remonte au tome deux de Manmachine Interface. De toutes façons, à la lecture de celui-là, il semble que Shirow se soit déjà un peu perdu dans son propre délire, à trop imaginer des univers cybervirtuels… M’enfin, il avait peut-être tout dit avant.
Non non, presque dix ans, à un mois près. MMI a commencé en 1997 dans le Young Magazine et même si je n’ai pas la date du dernier chapitre, le tout est sorti dans la Solid Box en décembre 2000 si je ne m’abuse. C’est une version short-cut que remplacera la version standard de juin 2001 rallongée de 32 pages. Donc, au pire, ça fait quand même neuf ans. (Soyons précis !)

Quand je pense que je suis spécialement retourné aujourd’hui à la médiathèque pour l’emprunter ! Du coup j’ai commencé à le lire… cybermonde et petites culottes, c’est quand même assez spécial °~°
J’ai vu passer il y a peu (moins de 5 ans en tout cas) des illustrations plutôt très tendancieuses, voire limite H.
Sinon, il y aurait une série télé en images de synthèse de 13 épisodes prévue pour 2011 sur la série Appleseed + 2 films.
ça c’est un scoop… maintenant faut voir si le design sera le même que celui des films, ou s’il reviendra un peu à l’original. parce que l’image de synthèse, pour les personnages, hein… enfin tu m’as compris.
Ex Machina est une daube complète et totale (mis à part graphiquement et niveau explosions boum boum toussa), mais j’avais trouvé que le premier film, même s’il s’éloignait déjà méchamment du manga, en gardait quand même un peu de l’essence ~
Toujours pas vu l’OVA, et au niveau de l’adaptabilité de Appleseed tu auras ptet une nouvelle réponse avec le Appleseed XIII annoncé récemment ^^

Guilhem l’avait déjà posté sur le Dino bleu, je remets le trailer d’Appleseed XIII ici, sachant que la sortie est annoncée pour juin prochain, directement en OAV, sans passer par la diffusion TV.
Le design, de toute évidence, repart sur les bases des films de 2005 et 2007… hélas. Le trailer ne montre aucun progrès sur le défaut principal du design : l’inexpressivité de Deunan. Elle a même l’air encore plus artificielle ici que dans les films, c’est dire… Je ne veux pas être mauvaise langue, mais ça sent le fail.

Après avoir réussi à mettre la main sur les 5 volumes format occidental (4 neufs et 1 occas), je viens de finir à mon tour le manga Appleseed.
J’ajouterais quelques remarques à ton article concernant celui-ci.
Effectivement, l’univers est très fouillé et détaillé. Mieux vaut ne pas lâcher le titre en cours de lecture sous peine d’être rapidement perdu. Et avoir le 5ème tome sous la main (qui présente en plus de qques belles planches et de commentaire de l’auteur l’univers Appleseed) permet aussi de s’y retrouver plus facilement.
J’avoue d’ailleurs au départ avoir été un peu effrayé.
Je retiens donc deux histoires, chacune sur deux tomes, la dernière étant assez anecdotique, et valant uniquement pour les facéties du couple Dunan/Briareos.
Alors que la première se veut philosophique, la seconde lorgne du côté politique/relations internationales. Dans chaque cas, il y a effectivement de quoi noyer le lecteur de détails. Ce dont ne se prive pas l’auteur. D’autant, que, notamment dans la seconde histoire il se permet de rajouter une petite histoire annexe noyée dans l’intrigue principale.
Mais un final, c’est plutôt agréable et valorisant d’avoir l’impression de lire quelque chose qui invite à une réflexion assez concrète sur notre société et son devenir. Ceci étant le point commun des deux histoires et ce qui semble le plus préoccuper l’auteur (voir sa « reflexion » au tome 5).
Le dessin est effectivement riche et détaillé, ce que j’apprécie plutôt, mais m’a paradoxalement parfois donné des impressions de fouillis. J’ai parfois été perdu dans ses planches. Notamment dans les scènes d’action à ne plus savoir qui est qui. Voilà pour moi le principal (le seul ?) aspect négatif du manga.
Car Masamune Shirow a de réels talents de narrateur qui arrive à rendre passionnant ce qui aurait pu être indigeste. Et qui à réussi le temps de ma lecture à me rendre jaloux d’un cyborg à tête de lapin.
Du coup, j’ai envie de mettre sur le dos de ces adaptations ratées ou semi-ratées (je parle sans connaître, je n’en ai vue aucune) la popularité mitigée de ce titre. Et comment expliquer autrement que Dunan ne soit pas devenue une icône
