Falllait-il éditer « Ma vie manga », d’Osamu Tezuka?

Vous qui me faites le plaisir de lire régulièrement mon blog (oui, vous), savez combien j’admire l’oeuvre d’Osamu Tezuka. Chacune de mes lectures fut l’occasion de découvrir, non pas seulement un auteur, mais des pans entiers de l’imaginaire japonais, de l’histoire de l’archipel nippon, et de l’art de faire des mangas. Je tiens la Vie de Bouddha et Black Jack comme de tels chefs d’oeuvres, que je ne sais par quel bout vous les présenter, pour en faire une de mes chroniques. Prenant mon faible courage à deux mains, j’ai tout de même chroniqué ici Astroboy, La Femme Insecte, Ayako, Kirihito, l’Arbre au Soleil et Ludwig B. Je n’ai jamais été déçu. Mais pourquoi cette introduction? Pour m’excuser, presque, du ton que je donne à ma chronique?

Je l’admets, oui. J’attendais beaucoup trop de ce mignon petit livre, format Bibliothèque Verte, couverture rigide et vernissée à l’ancienne et jaquette sobre et stylée. En rayon, un blister de cellophane m’empêchait de le feuilleter ; j’aurais pu sinon me faire une idée du contenu.

La lecture commence pourtant bien. Au cours des trois premiers chapitres, sur les sept que compte l’opuscule, Osamu Tezuka raconte certaines  anecdotes de son enfance, de ses insouciantes années d’école primaire jusqu’à la traumatisante expérience de la guerre, culminant lors de deux épisodes : le bombardement d’Osaka en mars 1945, où il échappa de peu à la mort, et le jour de la défaite de l’Empire, qu’il ressent comme une nouvelle naissance. Ces deux évènements, et d’autres plus anodins en apparence, sont fondateurs dans la vocation du sensei. Ils sont racontés sur un ton alerte, sans apitoiement ni mélancolie.

Cela aurait pu continuer dans cette veine, avec un récit des premières années de sa vie de mangaka, son processus créatif, ses projets, etc, bref, ce qu’annonçait le titre : Ma vie manga. Mais très vite, le livre devient une compilation de généralités plus ou moins philosophiques, qui, prises dans leur contexte, c’est-à-dire oralement, lors des conférences données par le sensei, pourraient apparaître vivantes et adéquates. Mais ici, imprimées dans ce livre, elles n’ont plus qu’un rapport indirect avec le sujet de départ. Donc, dès la moitié de l’ouvrage, on a le droit à des pages entières sur des sujets aussi palpitants que l’éducation des enfants, les dangers du progrès scientifique, et des prescriptions sur la meilleure façon de vivre l’instant présent avec sérénité. C’est sympathique, touchant même, mais parfaitement rasoir. On savait Tezuka marqué par le bouddhisme, m’enfin tout de même, c’est au mangaka ou à l’adepte que s’intéresse le lecteur en  priorité?

Dans cette deuxième partie du livre, deux brefs passages évoquent de nouveau certains aspects de la riche carrière d’Osamu Tezuka : 1- ses tentatives pour créer une animation à la japonaise, notamment à travers son premier projet pour la télévision, Astroboy ; 2- les années de vaches maigres, où il ne doit son salut économique qu’à son acharnement au travail… et à l’intervention d’un admirateur et mécène, marchand de meubles, qui l’aida à éponger ses dettes. Mais ces trop brefs aperçus, noyés entre les considérations générales sur l’homme, la vie, la mort tout ça, ne me font que regretter ce qu’aurait pu être Ma vie manga.

Hommage, mais intérêt?
Ni une autobiographie, ni une rétrospective de l’oeuvre, ni un artbook, ni une synthèse analytique, Ma vie manga est un objet étrange, une sorte d’hommage ou de collector, saupoudrant d’anecdotes la pensée philosophique du maître. L’humanisme, le pacifisme, l’amour de la nature, tout cela on le connait déjà, à travers les mangas eux-mêmes, et avec une maestria qui n’est plus à démontrer. Sans le vecteur des personnages, mis en situation de façon comique ou dramatique, le message tombe à plat. Et à 12 euros les 190 pages imprimées presque aussi gros qu’un livre pour enfants, quelques planches en illustration, c’est à se demander à quoi sert cette édition… En attendant, je vais continuer à découvrir l’oeuvre, la vraie, avec à mon programme immédiat : Léo roi de la jungle (Kazé), et Nanairo Inko (Asuka).

    Tu as eu de la chance jusque-là, car tous les Osamu Tezuka ne sont pas nécessairement des réussites. Il faut bien voir que les éditeurs ont édité à peu près tous ses « classiques », mais continuent à prospecter pour en proposer toujours plus, car cela ne coûte pas cher (enfin moins cher que la majorité des autres manga) et que cela reste un auteur de prestige. Donc oui, il y a un risque de tomber sur des oeuvres moins intéressantes ; tu me diras ce que tu auras pensé de Nanairo Inko, mais hormis son premier et son dernier chapitre, c’est un titre que j’ai trouvé franchement médiocre. Je n’ai pas non plus adoré Ludwig B – pas autant que toi, tout du moins – et Soleil avait publié des titres hautement dispensables comme Triton. Si tu les trouves d’occasion, par contre, je ne saurais que trop te recommander Avaler la Terre.

    Nous allons avoir deux autres titres de Osamu Tezuka prochainement en France : Alabaster et Le Chant d’Appolon. Je n’ai pas lu le premier, mais il jouit d’une bonne réputation. Le second, je l’ai pris en import américain, il s’agit d’un manga dur mais réussi.

    Est-ce que tu as tenté de te pencher sur d’autres ouvrages sortis en France concernant ton auteur fétiche, genre une biographie en BD (http://bd.casterman.com/catalogues_list.cfm?CategID=1041&OwnerId=815) ou le tome 10 000 images (http://www.editions-h.fr/M10kimages2.html). Peut-être que d’autres t’indiqueront d’autres lectures. Ce n’est pas cela qui doit manquer, en élargissant aux bouquins en anglais.

    Je suis profondément en désaccord avec toi (oué je le dis comme ça direct). Tout d’abord par le livre lui-même, rien que le format indiquait que l’on n’aurait pas un bouquin qui s’attaque en profondeur à ses pensées. Ensuite pour que le le livre soit édité chez nous, je pense qu’il fallait aussi se dire qu’il se devait un minimum ouvert à tous. Tu dis que tu connaissais déjà la majorité des informations, moi aussi, mais pourtant ça me paraît évident que le livre devait reprendre ces généralités qui ne le sont en fait pas du tout. Ensuite tu dis un truc : « c’est au mangaka ou à l’adepte que s’intéresse le lecteur en priorité? » -> Je ne suis pas sûr de comprendre bien cette phrase tellement elle me paraît fausse. Car les deux sont intimement liés, et si les mangas de Tezuka sont encore d’une qualité exceptionnelle aujourd’hui, c’est aussi par toute la philosophie qui se dégage de ses œuvres, personnellement j’ai beaucoup apprécié ce genre de commentaire. Évidemment je comprends que tu peux être déçu car tu t’attendais à autre chose, mais ça n’en reste pas pour le moins un livre que j’ai beaucoup apprécié et qui valait largement une édition de la part de Kana. Ça m’étonne beaucoup que tu en aies ressorti une telle conclusion.

      Merci pour ta réaction. Le titre que j’ai donné à mon avis est une sorte de provocation. « Fallait-il l’éditer? » Cela sous-entend que non, il ne fallait pas, et si ce n’est pas à moi de le décider, je ne peux m’empêcher de m’interroger.

      Le livre s’appelle « ma vie manga ». je regrette, mais l’intitulé et la quatrième de couv’ laissaient clairement entendre que ce livre de 190 pages allait contenir l’autobiographie d’un mangaka, peut-être succinte, peut-être non linéaire et sous forme d’anecdotes, mais pas autre chose. j’étais parti pour lire « ma vie mon oeuvre », et je me suis retrouvé avec « mes leçons de morale ».
      j’ai horreur qu’on me fasse la morale. je pense d’ailleurs que Tezuka devait en avoir horreur aussi.

      donc dans « ma vie manga » il est très peu question de la vie de Tezuka, et encore moins de sa vie comme mangaka. Et les mangas sont à peine évoqués, juste à l’appui de généralités philosophiques qui sont, en outre, embrouillées et contradictoires (cela aurait mérité plus de développement, mais j’étais trop déçu – en gros par exemple : 1 – la science c’est mal car elle apporte à l’homme l’illusion de la maîtrise du monde et l’illusion d’une vie meilleure, alors que l’homme des cavernes qui crevait à 22 ans bouffé par un ours n’avait certainement pas peur de la mort parce qu’il était nettement plus en harmonie avec la nature – (burp, l’ours est d’accord) – 2 – oui mais la science c’est bien car elle permettra à nos petits enfants d’aller sur la lune d’où il contempleront notre déchéance terrestre pendant qu’ils fonderont un monde nouveau – c’est écrit noir sur blanc !) enfin bref…

      il y a autre chose, une impression, qui m’a gênée dans cette compilation de conférences : c’est un homme à la fin de sa vie, qui embrasse sa carrière et qui lui donne une justification a posteriori. Il cite des évènements déclencheurs et développe dessus, plusieurs décennies après, une sorte de théorie générale de son oeuvre. comme si il n’avait jamais hésité, jamais changé, comme si le Tezuka de 60 ans était né en 1945, pouf, comme ça, et avait commencé de tracer un unique sillon bien droit. or justement, passées les anecdotes de jeunesse, on n’apprend presque plus rien, dans le livre, sur sa carrière, ses aléas, ses choix, ses doutes, ce qui fait la richesse d’un créateur au fond. cela me fait penser à ce proverbe, peut-être chinois : « l’expérience est une lampe que l’on s’attache dans le dos, et qui n’éclaire que le chemin déjà parcouru. »
      bien entendu c’est une impression, je n’ai pas prétention de dire que tout le monde pensera pareil.

      Tu me rétorqueras que je n’ai qu’à m’en prendre qu’à moi-même, que je n’avais qu’à lire les compte-rendus avant d’acheter, ok mais les rares articles à ce ce sujet étaient soit des copiés-collés de la 4eme de couv ou du service de presse, soit carrément mensongers (par exemple : « Une lecture largement accessible et ludique, donc, mais dans laquelle rien ne manque, et par ailleurs largement illustrée. A lire de toute urgence ! » fallait oser…)

      Tout ce que je dis là est un avis sur le livre, par sur le mangaka, encore moins sur l’oeuvre, à laquelle je voue toujours mon admiration. Et « ma vie manga » m’apparaît finalement un petit livre de célébration, où le mangaka s’efface derrière l’hommage au grand homme disparu, hommage mérité, ça je ne le conteste pas du tout.

    L’ayant acheté, j’ai gardé ton post dans un coin pour le lire après avoir lu le bouquin. Voila chose faite, je peux te lire et réagir !

    Effectivement, je pense que dès le départ tu en attendais vraiment trop de ce livre, comme dit plus haut, rien qu’au format tu sens que ça va être un truc succinct. Perso, je n’ai rien lu de tezuka (même si je compte le faire) mais je m’interesse globalement à tout ce qui est « parole de mangaka » ou « parole de japonais », donc direct, c’était le genre de bouquin que j’aime lire. Et un court comme ça, c’est une friandise on va dire.

    J’ai énormément aimé les premiers chapitres ou tezuka parle de son enfance, et beaucoup aimé la suite même si j’aurai aimé que ça continue sur le ton des souvenirs très personnels que j’affectionne beaucoup. Mais au final, ce livre m’a permis de m’introduire au personnage, à sa philosophie, à sa vision des mangas, et ça a attisé ma curiosités envers lui et m’a encore plus donné envie de lire ses mangas. Et en fait je pense que c’est plus aux novices que ça s’adresse, non ? Enfin, de toutes manières dès que l’on devient expert dans un sujet, on devient plus exigeant et difficile à satisfaire, donc tu ne pouvais pas être satisfais pas ce petit livre.

    Sinon point amusant, ce bouquin date de 1997 au japon. Sortit à l’époque comme un hommage j’imagine, et 10 ans après, et bien, il est toujours autant d’actualité et pourrait avoir été écrit hier.

      moi aussi j’ai apprécié la première partie du livre. c’est par la suite que j’ai été désappointé. je ne comprenais plus trop l’intérêt. m’enfin, c’est personnel apparemment. donc pas grave ;-)
      tu es trop gentille si tu me ranges dans la catégorie des « spécialistes » de Tezuka. certes je commence à en avoir lu quelques uns, mais je suis loin d’avoir tout lu ! par exemple je n’ai pas encore lu « l’enfant aux trois yeux », ni « Phénix », ni « MW », etc. pour toi, je te recommande de commencer par Ayako, c’est peut-être son plus dramatique mais quelle merveille !

        Ah, c’est marrant que tu me parles d’Ayako, sa réédition compilée m’avait attirée et j’avais pas mal hésité à l’acheter. Y’a aussi une histoire avec une femme chien la, j’arrive plus à me souvenir du titre, fin dont le thème me semblait cool (d’ailleurs je crois que tu en a parlé). Mais je verrais si je peux pas les trouver en bibliothèque avant de les acheter.
        C’est vrai qu’il faut pas que je te dise expert, sinon tu vas devoir changer le titre de ton blog, ce serait bête ;b
