L’histoire :
En 1753, Ieshige Tokugawa, 9ème Shogun de l’Ere Edo, ordonne au clan Shimazu de prendre à leur charge les travaux d’endiguement des fleuves Kizo, Nagara et Ibi, dont les lits entremêlés provoquent de graves inondations, mettant en péril paysans et récoltes. Cet ordre est suprenant, car les Shimazu sont de Satsuma, province la plus au sud du Kyushu, et ne sont donc pas concernés par les inondations… Pour beaucoup, il est évident que la décision du Shogun est politique, et vise à ruiner et donc affaiblir les Shimazu, clan frondeur s’il en est. En effet, le coût des travaux est estimé à une somme astronomique, alors même que les Samouraïs ont déjà du mal à joindre les deux bouts… La mort dans l’âme, plus de 900 Samouraïs de la maison Shimazu quittent leurs foyers pour rejoindre le chantier. Humiliés, il font de la réussite des travaux un défi, au shogun et à eux-mêmes, pour prouver qu’ils sont capables de résister aux pires conditions et de réussir l’impossible. Même si cela implique de se rabaisser au rang de modeste terrassier.
Ce que j’en pense :
Rigoureusement authentique, quoique méconnu, cet épisode de l’histoire du Shogunat d’Edo s’inscrit dans le cadre de la « guerre froide » que se livrent le pouvoir central (le Shogun) et certains fiefs du sud, dont les Shimazu de Satsuma, qui essaient de maintenir leurs traditions et leur quasi-autonomie. La région de Satsuma correspond à l’actuelle préfecture de Kagoshima, la plus méridionale de l’archipel nippon. Les hommes de Satsuma ont toujours été parmi les plus rebelles parmi les fiefs réunis sous la domination des Tokugawa. Naturellement, ce ressentiment culminera au rôle central que jouera le clan Satsuma lors de la guerre du Boshin, qui balaya le Shogunat et restaura l’Empire, avec l’avènement de l’Ere Meiji. Mais ceci est une autre histoire.
Lorsqu’en 1753, les Shimazus de Satsuma sont obligés aux travaux d’endiguement des fleuves en crue, ils le vivent comme une « guerre sans armes » , destinée à les vaincre par un tribut en hommes et en argent trop cher à payer par un seul clan. Contre toute attente, et malgré un lourd bilan (un grand nombre de Samouraïs tués, surtout suicidés), et le triplement du budget initial, les travaux furent achevés en deux ans, et les hommes de Satsuma purent rentrer chez eux la tête haute.
Les 6 tomes de Satsuma ou l’honneur de ses Samouraïs se présentent non pas commune unique fresque historique, du début à la fin, mais comme une chronique, organisée en récits chronologiques indépendants, mettant en scène personnages historiques ou de fiction. Nous sommes ainsi plongés dans le quotidien des Samouraïs, dans ses aspects les plus glorieux comme les plus sordides. Sans didactisme inutile, juste par son art de la narration et son sens de l’anecdote, Hiroshi Hirata donne vie à ces hommes forts, mais pétris de contradictions, et que les règles strictes du Bushido exposent à donner leur vie à chaque instant, pour ne pas encourir le pire, c’est-à-dire le déshonneur.
On peut considérer cette vie de deux façons : soit en les admirant, ces hommes prêts à tout pour respecter leur serment, s’infligeant une discipline de fer ne craignant ni la douleur, ni la mort ; soit en les plaignant, ces esclaves volontaires d’un ordre profondément inégalitaire, ces soldats qui n’ont que la mort reçue ou infligée comme unique alternative au doute, à l’exploitation et à la révolte. Est-elle si belle, cette voie du guerrier zen, telle que nous la décrit Hiroshi Hirata? Dans un univers en proie aux inégalités, à la corruption, à la cupidité et à la violence, la voie du Samouraï apparaît comme une réponse suicidaire, désespérée, mais elle peut également accomplir de grandes choses : réaliser des travaux d’Hercule, et endiguer les fleuves en furie qui tuent paysans et troupeaux. En cela, ils ne sont pas très différents des paysans qu’ils aident. Ce fait d’armes, accompli la pelle et la pioche à la main, au lieu du sabre, est bien moins connu que de nombreux récits de Samouraïs glorifiés par la tradition.
Avec son dessin robuste, expressionniste, mais précis, sa documentation rigoureuse et sa conviction de réhabiliter la cause des Samouraïs de Satsuma, Hiroshi Hirata est le mangaka, pardon, le gekigaka idéal pour peindre cette chronique sombre et violente. Si tous les récits qui la composent n’ont pas tous le même intérêt (les tomes 1, 5 et 6 sont les meilleurs), et s’il est vrai qu’il est parfois difficile de distinguer qui est qui entre tous ces fiers gaillards au regard noir, il y a là assez d’exploits et d’aventures et de choses à apprendre, pour passionner le lecteur intéressé par l’histoire Japonaise ancienne, tellement mouvementée. Entre les récits de jeunesse (Zatoichi) remplis d’action pure, et ceux de la maturité (Plus forte que le sabre) plus nets et plus détaillés, Satsuma ou l’honneur de ses Samouraïs est un recueil maîtrisé, plein de bruit et de fureur et passionnant. Un classique, somme toute.
Assez étonné. Je connaissais ce manga de nom, et je m’attendais à un grand récit de batailles genre Sekigahara. Pour autant, cela n’a l’air inintéressant, loin de là.

oui, j’avais commencé à le lire, et interrompu dans le flot des choses à faire. là, j’ai pu le finir (en fait je l’ai relu intégralement) et c’est vraiment un cycle passionnant. plus ça va et plus je m’intéresse à l’histoire ancienne du japon.

Bon ben j’aurais mis le temps pour les commencer (depuis … Noël donc) mais je les ai vite expédié et j’ai trouvé ça très bien !
Plutôt original car l’histoire est assez atypique par rapport à ce à quoi on pourrait s’attendre dans le genre, tout comme la façon dont le récit nous est narré. Toutes ces anecdotes nous immergent facilement dans la vie de cette époque (façon documentaire presque parfois) avec toute la dimension sociale qui va avec. Même la notion d’honneur est prise à contre-pied puisqu’ici ceux de Satsuma doivent, non sans difficulté, abandonner cette valeur pourtant si chère aux samouraïs … Et puis je ne sais pas jusqu’à quel point les histoires sont vraies (et puis bon c’était un autre temps) mais je reste toujours impressionné par cette force de caractère et cette maîtrise de soi permettant à ces hommes de se couper un membre ou de mettre fin à leur vie « simplement » pour amener à un consensus.
Sinon effectivemment, j’ai parfois eu du mal à différencier certains visages, seul reproche que je pourrais formuler au niveau du dessin qui de manière générale, retranscrit avec force ces portraits d’hommes à la volonté de fer.
En supplément bonus, on m’avait offert « L’Incident de Sakai et autres récits guerriers » du même auteur donc je vais aller découvrir ça sous peu.
