Comme promis, je vous propose un autre focus sur une oeuvre de musique classique (ou plutôt ici : de musique baroque) présente dans la bande originale de Neon Genesis Evangelion. Et comme annoncé, je vais cette fois vous présenter le canon de Pachelbel.
Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) : Compositeur et organiste de l’époque baroque, il est essentiellement musicien d’église ou pour la noblesse (seule façon pour un musicien de bien gagner sa vie). Ami de la famille Bach, il influence Jean-Sébastien Bach, par son art de la mélodie, simple et efficace, et par son contrepoint rigoureux, un peu rigide, que l’on retrouve dans le célèbre canon.
Un canon est une forme dont la mélodie est jouée à plusieurs voix, et répétée en décalage par ces différentes voix, créant ainsi un contrepoint. Pachelbel compose son canon pour trois violons et une basse continue ; les violons jouent le thème en décalage de deux mesures puis continuent de développer le thème en variations, avec ornementation, tandis que la basse continue répète obstinément (= ostinato) le même motif d’accompagnement.
Le canon de Pachelbel est devenu populaire depuis les années 60, à travers toutes sortes de transcriptions modernes pour orchestre, pour choeur, pour quatuor à cordes, etc. Sans parler des adaptations en musique pop, rock, variété, dance, et même hip-hop. (L’oeuvre séduit pour la simplicité de sa mélodie, facile à suivre (et donc à adapter musicalement), et pour l’impression de sérénité qui en émane. (Des exemples d’adaptations, parfois inavouées, du canon de Pachelbel : Michel Sardou « la Maladie d’amour », Demis Roussos « Rain and tears », Michel Polnareff, Village People, Pet Shop Boys, etc…).
On a le droit de préférer, à ces « reprises », la chanson Komm, süsser Tod dans The End of Evangelion, qui se base sur la même mélodie, comme je le rappelle dans ce billet.
Le canon figure sur de nombreuses compilations de musique baroque, généralement avec l’adagio d’Albinoni, l’air de la suite n°3 pour orchestre de Bach (que l’on retrouve dans la scène de combat d’Asuka contre les anges), la toccata pour orgue de Bach, etc.
Dans la bande originale de Neon Genesis Evangelion, c’est la version pour quatuor à cordes classique qui est jouée (mais pas en intégralité – sauf sur le CD « Evangelion Symphony » live). Les musiciens sont : Kaworu (premier violon), Asuka (second violon), Rei (violon alto) et Shinji (violoncelle). Les violons jouent le thème en canon tandis que Shinji joue l’accompagnement. Le morceau s’interrompt abruptement après environ 3 minutes.
Episode : Death and Rebirth.
Scène : Après que Kaworu ait rejoint Asuka, Rei et Shinji, ils commencent à jouer. Noir, titre : « Kanon D-dur » (= canon en ré majeur).
Dans un théâtre. Shinji, assis sur une chaise pliante, seul spectateur d’une scène vide. Successivement, les personnages d’Evangelion, dont Shinji lui-même, apparaissent et le fixent sans bouger. Shinji à l’air déprimé, indifférent, ou angoissé (gouttes de sueur sur son front), selon les angles de vue. Puis il se tient la tête à deux mains. On voit ensuite différents appareillages du théâtre : boîtes de fusibles, scène, rideaux, éléments de décor, projecteurs. Un zoom sur le néon de la sortie de secours. Puis on voit la chaise de Shinji… vide. Quelques images extérieures : les pas de Shinji entrant dans l’appartement de Misato, le lit sale et vide de Rei, la silhouette de Misato, la statue d’ange de Kaworu, un tricycle cassé, Hikari Horaki de dos, le crucifix de Misato, des bandages ensanglantés, la tombe de Yui, la pluie, une tasse cassée, des valises. Shinji assis sur une plage sous la lune, il parle seul (on n’entend pas ses paroles). En réalité, il est dans le théâtre et les projecteurs volent en éclats.
On entend de nouveau le canon, version longue cette fois, comme musique du générique de l’épisode « Death » . A la fin de ce générique, Shinji se lève de sa chaise, prend son violoncelle et s’en va.
