Ce que je m’apprête à faire aujourd’hui est pour moi un nouvel exercice : écrire une chronique sur une série qui se termine, alors que j’avais publié un premier billet à la sortie de son premier tome. Boucler la boucle, en somme. Cette série, c’est My Girl, de Mizu Sahara. Plusieurs de mes camarades ont évoqué, en termes élogieux, le one-shot de la même auteure, Un bus passe, sorti en 2011. My Girl n’a pas eu autant d’attentions, à part celles de Bulles et Onomatopées, de Mang’Impressions et de votre serviteur. Fini en en 5 tomes, ce manga m’a enchanté de la première à la dernière case. Pourtant, c’est curieux, à l’instant, les mots me manquent un peu. Peut-être parce que je ressens un sentiment de perte, que j’ai du mal à exprimer clairement.
Je précise que je vais dévoiler certains aspects de la fin, et que si vous voulez juste découvrir My Girl, il vaut mieux rester sur mon article de présentation.
Cinq tomes, donc, découpés en autant d’années où se tissent puis se renforcent les relations entre un jeune père veuf et sa fille, dont il ignorait l’existence avant qu’elle s’installe dans sa vie, pour sa rentrée à la maternelle. Un tome par an, c’est dire si le manga, comme ses personnages, ont pris leur temps. A travers une succession de saynètes anodines, d’instants de la vie quotidienne, sans rebondissements ni retournements de situation, My Girl n’est pas non plus une histoire foncièrement originale. Mais j’y ai totalement adhéré, en m’identifiant au personnage du père, Masamune, jeune adulte un peu velléitaire, n’aimant pas être bousculé dans son train-train de salaryman célibataire. En se découvrant père alors qu’il n’y était pas préparé, Masamune se voit forcé à devenir adulte, à exercer ses responsabilités, et à s’interroger sur son avenir. Ne plus se laisser seulement vivre, mais aller de l’avant, cette expression revient souvent dans le manga. Particulièrement dans les quatrième et cinquième tomes. En effet, depuis que Masamune et Koharu se sont mutuellement acceptés en tant que famille, le souvenir de Yoko, la maman décédée, est à la fois une inspiration, et un poids. Une inspiration car elle leur sert de repère, et car ils se fient à son exemple pour savoir comment faire face aux aléas de la vie. Un poids, car ils n’arrivent pas à dépasser cet amour pour une disparue.
L’enjeu de la fin de My Girl est de savoir comment Masamune et Koharu réussiront enfin à passer le cap du deuil. Comment, et non pas si, car il n’y a pas de gros suspense, cela se termine plus ou moins comme on se l’imagine. Mais pas sans quiproquos, ni quelques gags qui viennent ajouter une touche de légèreté à cette fin attendue (bon, on n’est pas dans l’humour de Yotsuba!, non plus). En effet, depuis le tome 4, un personnage jusque là secondaire a pris une nouvelle importance, c’est la jolie mademoiselle Katagiri. Cette collègue de Masamune, dont on se demande 
au début si le charme n’est pas son unique qualité tant elle est godiche et maladroite, se présente comme la candidate la plus sérieuse au coeur du jeune père… et de sa fille. Et finalement, c’est elle qui doit assez changer pour que les autres changent. Jusqu’à surmonter sa nature de grande fille timide : « Monsieur Kazama ! Parfois vous êtes tellement balourd qu’on a envie de vous frapper! » Car telle est l’épreuve qu’elle doit affronter : séduire non pas une, mais deux personnes. L’épilogue, dont je vous laisse la surprise, s’intitule : « les chaussettes de papa » . Vous avez dit sérieux?
Au passage, ce que j’avais lu chez l’estimé Sirius à propos d’Usagi Drop, qui traite peu ou prou d’un sujet similaire, les relations père/fille, ne me donnait pas du tout envie de le lire – au moins, il n’y a pas de mauvaises surprises de ce genre à attendre à la conclusion de My Girl. Au contraire.
Ce qui m’a particulièrement séduit, dans My Girl, c’est non seulement l’attachement aux personnages, et l’optimisme de l’ensemble, mais c’est aussi le style, délicat, rêveur, léger, dynamique – comme dans une suite d’instantanés photographiques, Mizu Sahara réussit à capter l’instant fugace d’une mimique, d’un regard, d’une émotion qui passe. J’ai un faible pour les pages couleur, en début et milieu de volume, et pour les couvertures, les premières pastel, la dernière plus chaleureuse. La mise en page est proche du shojo, avec de multiples gros plans sur les expressions des visages, et des cadrages dynamiques, souvent décalés. On peut juger que ses personnages sont trop systématiquement sympas, mais lorsque la mode est au seinen morbide à tout va (suicides et compagnie), un seinen émouvant et optimiste, c’est quand même vachement reposant. Les gens heureux n’ont pas d’histoire, il paraît : et alors? Quand elle est racontée avec autant de douceur, une non-histoire peut prendre des allures de conte de fées. Et même si elle se termine par « ils se marièrent… » etc, au fond, ça n’a rien de ringard. Pas pour moi en tous cas.
Je viens d’envoyer un mail à mon spécialiste pour commander 5 volumes. Il sera content. Sahara Mizu est une grande auteure qui ne m’a jamais déçu dans ses one-shots. Le trait m’a ici l’air moins rigide que dans Un bus passe.
Pour Un drôle de père, lis quand-même les quatre premiers tomes, ça en vaut la peine
Ok, ok, je note. Même si, t’ayant lu, je ne pourrai le faire sans arrière-pensée…
Bon, c’est surtout Un bus passe que j’ai envie de lire maintenant, à vrai dire.
