L’histoire :
Dans l’ouest sauvage, deux vagabonds à l’air miteux débarquent dans une ville au milieu des landes désertiques. Le premier est un grand cowboy au visage barré de cicatrices : c’est Harlock, ex-capitaine pirate qui écumait autrefois l’Océan Pacifique. Son acolyte est presque un nain, myope et enveloppé dans une cape trouée : c’est Toshiro, un as du sabre venu du Japon. De ville en ville, ils louent leurs services comme gardes du corps pour gagner de l’argent, tels des ronins de l’ère Edo. Au commencement de l’histoire, ils se retrouvent mêlés à une affaire de règlement de compte, avec un prêteur sur gages, et doivent leur salut à l’intervention d’une mystérieuse jeune femme solitaire, qui possède deux armes mortelles : une winchester et un physique de bombe sexuelle. Formant désormais un trio, Harlock, Toshiro et la belle Simunora vont poursuivre une quête dangereuse : retrouver les traces d’une communauté d’immigrants japonais, disparus lors du massacre de Samouraï Krieg. Pour cela, ils devront surmonter indifférence et préjugés, et affronter toutes sortes de périls : bandits sans foi ni loi, shérifs corrompus, et surtout, les tueurs à gages sous les ordres de l’Organisation…
Ce que j’en pense :
Au premier abord, Gun Frontier est un objet étrange, se présentant à la fois comme un western spaghetti, et comme un épisode des aventures de Captain Harlock et de son ami Toshiro. Ceux qui attendent une liaison directe avec la chronologie des sagas spatiales de Leiji Matsumoto, et notamment avec Albator/Harlock, risquent d’être désorientés : non seulement le contexte est totalement différent, puisque situé au Far West et entièrement dénué d’éléments de science-fiction, mais en plus les personnalités et les rapport entre Harlock et Toshiro sont inversés. D’habitude, nous avons le charismatique 
Harlock comme personnage principal, et l’intrigue est normalement centrée sur ses quêtes personnelles, en rapport avec son lord passé. Dans Gun Frontier c’est le contraire : Toshiro est le leader (certes, décalé) du duo, c’est lui qui fait avancer l’intrigue, laquelle repose sur sa quête et son passé. Harlock est ici presque réduit au rôle de faire-valoir, il ne va pas au devant du danger mais accompagne Toshiro, comme un ami fidèle, lui sauvant la vie par son habileté au revolver.
Cette inversion des rôles a pu décevoir certains spectateurs, mais il faut savoir que Leiji Matsumoto a écrit le manga original de Gun Frontier entre 1972 et 1975, c’est-à-dire avant le manga Uchū kaizoku Captain Harlock, et bien sûr avant les anime Albator 78, Albator 84 et l’Arcadia de ma jeunesse. Les personnalités et les rôles respectifs de Harlock/Albator et Toshiro n’étaient donc pas encore gravés dans le marbre – si tant est qu’on puisse donner une cohérence à l’univers foisonnant de Leiji Matsumoto. Il y a donc deux façons de concevoir Gun Frontier :
1- Soit on le considère comme un arc de la chronologie, et on peut donc penser qu’il s’agit de la première (?) rencontre entre des membres des familles Harlock et Toshiro, les suivantes se situant pendant la seconde guerre mondiale (L’Arcadia de ma jeunesse), puis dans un lointain futur ; dans ce cas, il faut comme toujours avec Leiji Matsumoto accepter de passer pudiquement sur certaines incohérences scénaristiques (y compris les occurrences spatiales du nom même de Gun Frontier, donné à des villages ou à des planètes à l’apparence de Far West).
2- Soit on le prend comme un reload, une histoire originale qui se déploie selon sa propre logique, indépendamment des autres œuvres où apparaissent des personnages aux mêmes noms et aux mêmes visages. Personnellement, je préfère m’en tenir à cette optique, plutôt que de me griller inutilement des neurones à savoir pourquoi, comment, etc…
D’autant qu’en outre, Gun Frontier possède sa propre ambiance, proche des westerns spaghetti de Sergio Leone : le cowboy Harlock ressemble beaucoup plus au blondin joué par Clint Eastwood, qu’au corsaire de l’espace. Il y règne une violence gratuite et un cynisme auquels nous n’avons pas été habitués chez Matsumoto : s’enchaînent les scènes de viols, de pendaisons, de massacres, de sado-masochisme, sans que cela ne perturbe en aucune façon nos héros. D’habitude, quand il y a des morts violentes dans Albator et Cie, c’est dramatisé, contextualisé, et souvent critiqué par les héros. Souvenez-vous de la baffe monumentale qu’Albator/Harlock assène à Ramis/Tadashi, lorsque celui-ci massacre des sylvidres au canon laser par pure haine. Et de la leçon de morale qu’il lui donne après. Dans Gun Frontier, pas de morale ou à peine : ça flingue à tout va et sans remords. Il n’y a que lorsque les morts sont des proches de Toshiro, que cela pose un problème moral (mais vite oublié).
Gun Frontier est également empreint d’un érotisme appuyé, la troublante Simunora, pas farouche pour un dollar, étant déshabillée au moins une fois par épisode. Elle noue au début un rapport ambigu avec les deux amis, leur offrant tour-à-tour, voire simultanément, ses charmes. Plus tard, les relations deviennent sentimentales (je ne révèlera pas dans quel sens !) mais cela ne l’empêche pas, 
plus ou moins involontairement, d’utiliser son corps comme arme pour obtenir ce qu’elle veut. Elle n’est d’ailleurs pas le seul personnage féminin à perdre bêtement ses fringues toutes les cinq minutes. Je rassure tout de même les âmes sensibles : Gun Frontier satisfait à l’hypocrite censure japonaise, puisque chaque fois qu’elle est déshabillée, et ça arrive trèèès souvent, on ne voit ni poil ni téton.
Violence, cul, humour parodique sont les trois mamelles (hein? oh et puis WTF) de Gun Frontier, série distrayante et définitivement pas pour tous les publics. Si c’est votre dope, allez-y. Pour ma part, j’ai suivi les treize épisodes sans déplaisir. Il y a tout de même des détails gênants qui empêchent Gun Frontier de se hisser au niveau de séries adultes vraiment réussies, au hasard Cowboy Bebop.
Tout d’abord il y a la réalisation technique. Si le trio Harlock/Toshiro/Simunora est bien caractérisé, on ne peut pas en dire autant des personnages secondaires, souvent laids (sauf les nénettes), et indifférenciés. C’est bien simple, les cowboys sont à peu près tous identiques : grands minces et le menton carré. Ils portent les mêmes fringues, et n’ont que très peu de personnalité (à part le dernier méchant , sorte de boss final). Il en va de même pour les décors, totalement interchangeables : si les situations n’étaient pas aussi loufoques (chaque village possède une population soumise à une règle absurde, par exemple celui interdit aux gens mesurant moins d’1,60m!), il serait impossible de distinguer une ville d’une autre. Cela introduit une certaine monotonie que ne brisent que les dialogues entre les héros. Enfin, si le dessin est plutôt bien fini, j’ai trouvé l’animation souvent paresseuse.
D’autre part, l’intrigue pose un problème. Une des caractéristiques de Gun Frontier est qu’au visionnage, l’histoire apparaît comme un arc narratif qui s’intercalerait au milieu d’une série plus longue, sauf qu’elle n’a ni début ni fin. Le passé de Harlock et de Toshiro sera très succintement évoqué – quant à savoir comment et pourquoi ceux que recherche Toshiro ont émigré aux States, et comment il a réussi à retrouver leur trace, on n’en saura rien. Et le dernier épisode, s’il clôt effectivement cet arc, ramène d’une certaine manière le trio à son point de départ, et n’apporte pratiquement aucune réponse aux questions qui faisaient tout l’intérêt du suspense croissant au fil des épisodes. Si je suis habituellement client des histoires compliquées, et que les fins ouvertes ne me dérangent pas, là, j’ai trouvé que Gun Frontier frôle l’arnaque.
En conclusion, Gun Frontier possède assez de charme(s) et d’humour pour satisfaire ma curiosité, et me faire passer un bon moment ; mais le plaisir est contrebalancé par la frustration que provoque une réalisation technique inégale, et par un scénario qui abuse des grosses ficelles, jusqu’au rebondissement final qui n’en est pas un. Tout cela n’en fait pas un jalon majeur dans l’univers de Leiji Matsumoto, et certainement pas un digne concurrent pour Cowboy Bebop.
Je dois avoir la série qui traine en DVD dans un coin, mais je n’y ai pas touché… Avec le temps, j’ai fini par me méfier des adaptations récentes des travaux de Leiji Matsumoto (même si Galaxy Railways a bonne réputation). J’y jetterai probablement un coup d’œil un jour… Mais sans rien en attendre.
C’est triste, car à la base, je suis un grand admirateur de cet auteur.
