L’histoire :
19ème siècle, fin de l’ère Edo. Momosuke, un jeune auteur, se lasse d’écrire des contes pour enfants. Il se tourne vers les histoires de fantômes, et pour trouver l’inspiration, part sur les routes, collecter les faits divers les plus horribles. Égaré en montagne, il est sauvé d’une chute mortelle par Mataichi, un vendeur d’amulettes ambulant, vêtu de haillons. Ensemble ils se réfugient dans un ermitage, où ils retrouvent Ogin, une mystérieuse et belle jeune femme, montreuse de marionnettes. L’ermitage appartient à un homme qui n’a pas la conscience tranquille, et qui pense être hanté par un yokai, qui le tourmente sans répit…
En réalité, avec Nagamimi, un acteur de kabuki à la taille de géant, Mataichi et Ogin forment le trio des ongyou, des chasseurs d’âmes perdues qui traquent les pires criminels pour les renvoyer vers les ténèbres. Dotés de pouvoirs surnaturels, ils semblent obéir à un plan préétabli, et se trouvent chaque fois présents là où Momosuke arrive, guidé par la rumeur des faits divers les plus odieux…
Ce que j’en pense :
Vous aurez noté, je pense, que mon résumé ci-dessus est à peine compréhensible. C’est parce que venant d’en terminer le visionnage, je dois avouer que j’ai trouvé Requiem From the Darkness passablement embrouillé. Pourtant, ça m’a beaucoup plu. Mais je pense que pas mal de choses m’ont probablement échappé. Je m’explique.
Requiem From the Darkness se présente comme un thriller horrifique en 13 épisodes, les 10 premiers étant une suite d’histoires courtes centrées chacune autour d’un personnage destiné à « retourner aux ténèbres », à la suite d’un crime particulièrement horrible commis dans le passé. Le criminel est traqué par le trio des ongyou, qui emploient la ruse et la magie (essentiellement l’illusion) pour le confronter à ses crimes, et le chatier. Momosuke, d’abord simple témoin de leurs agissements, devient peu à peu leur chroniqueur, avant de s’apercevoir qu’il est lui-même impliqué et manipulé… Un des principaux moteurs de l’intrigue de Requiem From the Darkness est la relation ambigüe qu’entretiennent Momosuke et les ongyou. Le jeune écrivain est fasciné par ces trois êtres dont il ignore la nature, et surtout les motivations exactes. Mataichi, le nabot vendeur d’amulettes, est le cerveau et vraisemblablement le chef des ongyou. Il sauve Momosuke au début, et sous prétexte de lui en apprendre sur le monde des ténèbres, lui donne des indices ou des informations en vue de le manipuler. Ogin, dotée d’une plastique superlative (elle n’est pas sans me rappeler Faye, dans Cowboy Bebop), joue ostensiblement de ses charmes dans ce même but. Et si jamais ça tourne mal, le géant Nagamimi est là pour tirer Momosuke d’affaire, tant qu’ils ont encore besoin de lui…
Momosuke, lui, est un étrange mélange de détermination et de couardise. Fasciné par tout ce qui est sombre et sanglant, et probablement dépressif, il est tenté par le suicide, et sa quête de faits divers pour écrire des histoires d’horreur n’est qu’un prétexte pour mettre sa propre existence (et son âme) en danger. Une quête désespérée de sensations, une manière de se prouver qu’il est encore en vie. Sa naïveté le rend touchant, parfois agaçant, et permet bien sûr au spectateur de s’identifier.
Les intrigues de chaque épisode sont très originales, torturées et souvent à la limite de l’ignoble. Force est de constater une fois de plus que les japonais se permettent d’aborder bien des sujets tabous pour nous autres occidentaux, en particulier l’inceste, et le meurtre d’enfants. Voir des enfants souffrir et/ou mourir, même dans une fiction, reste quand même une expérience gênante, pour ne pas dire traumatisante.
L’ensemble nous offre une plongée complète dans le folklore japonais, côté sombre. Sorcières, esprits, monstres, yokai, créatures diverses et humains possédés ou métamorphosés, et même un tanuki (mais pas un gentil comme dans Pompoko, mais alors pas du tout). Pour les tuer ou les maîtriser, l’arme ultime est l’amulette, qui porte des incantations mortelles ; la ruse également est indispensable pour tromper les esprits malfaisants. La force, elle, et notamment l’habileté au sabre, ne sert à rien… si ce n’est à mourir dans l’honneur. Ou pas. Je pense cela dit que pas mal de références ont dû me passer au-dessus de la tête, n’ayant probablement pas assez de connaissances du folklore nippon, et notamment des contes qui ont inspiré Requiem From the Darkness.
Emballée avec une bonne dose d’humour noir, l’intrigue est prenante mais il est dommage qu’elle soit parfois si difficile à suivre. Non-dits, litotes et raccourcis se succèdent dans un rythme parfois frénétique, la densité des histoires ayant du mal à se caler à l’aise dans les 22 minutes de chaque épisode. La fin, notamment, s’oriente vers une conclusion grandguignolesque dont il est difficile de comprendre la finalité, avec à mon goût un peu trop d’éléments nouveaux pour que ça ne soit pas tiré par les cheveux. Qui sont les deux vielles dames? Et c’est quoi cette arme secrète? Quelle est la signification de l’oeil, véritable leitmotiv de tout l’anime? J’aime bien me faire balader, mais là, trop des questions restent sans réponse.
Enfin, ce qui fait pour moi le charme principal de Requiem From the Darkness, c’est sa réalisation. Dès le début, j’ai été surpris par le rendu graphique des décors, stylisés dans un genre d’aquarelle aux à-plats de couleurs glauques, parfois inspirés d’estampes anciennes ; mais aussi par l’extrême simplification des personnages secondaires. 
A part les personnages principaux, dessinés dans un style lisible et à peu près réaliste (j’ai dit à peu près), tous les autres personnages ont des visages réduits à de simples formes (têtes cylindriques ou cubiques), voire carrément grotesques (têtes monstrueuses, oreilles pointues, pas de nez ni de bouche, etc). L’idée étant sans doute de montrer que les monstres ne sont pas forcément ceux que l’on croit. Le résultat accentue l’impression de cauchemar, ce que je trouve particulièrement bien vu. Pour vous donner une idée, je vous propose de jeter un oeil sur le générique, certes plus fluide que l’animation des épisodes, mais que je trouve très réussi et qui donne une bonne idée de l’ambiance générale.
Intrigue obscure mais intéressante, design original, atmosphère oppressante, thèmes adultes et inconfortables, humour borderline, personnages bizarres… Requiem From the Darkness n’est définitivement pas un anime comme les autres, et c’est pour cela qu’il mérite d’être vu. Certes, il reste déconseillé aux âmes sensibles, comme on dit. Mais pour les âmes perdues, ça vaut le détour. Amen.
J’avais regardé les premiers épisodes, il y a des années. J’avais été séduit par l’esthétique et l’ambiance macabre, et parce que l’anime permettait d’en apprendre plus sur les yokais (il y a en un qui porte le même nom qu’un Pokemon).
