L’histoire :
A Shinjuku, à une heure de grande affluence, un homme d’affaires s’effondre, victime d’une spectaculaire hémorragie. Dans la foule, une vingtaine de personnes sont éclaboussées de son sang. Le corps, et les témoins, sont transportés à l’hôpital militaire de Tozai, à proximité. L’autopsie est prise en charge par Shun Onodera et Kaoru Sekiguchi, deux jeunes spécialistes en anatomie pathologique. Elle révèle que l’homme a succombé à une hémorragie fulgurante, de cause inconnue, accompagnée de la destruction interne de ses principaux organes vitaux… Suspectant une origine virale, de type Ebola, Sekiguchi et Onodera envoient des prélèvements de tissus à l’Institut Murakawa, seul laboratoire agréé au Japon pour étudier les virus de type P4… Or, selon les directives du Ministère de la Santé, l’étude de ce cas n’est pas autorisée. Pendant ce temps, les témoins de l’incident sont renvoyés chez eux, porteurs du virus sans le savoir… Parmi eux, la jeune Akari, une lycéenne que Shun connaît : c’est une de ses voisines. Tandis que le Ministre est parti à un week-end de golf, la propagation peut commencer…

Ce que j’en pense :
Lire un truc pareil quand on est soi-même patraque, faut être maso, non? Mais bon, Emerging est un excellent thriller, au suspense rondement mené, et dont les deux fois 260 pages se lisent d’une traite. Sur un sujet très actuel (les nouvelles épidémies, H1N1, SRAS, Ebola, virus du Nil, etc), il pose des questions qui reflètent nos angoisses les plus profondes face à la maladie. Le scénario a été supervisé par un certain Nakahara, docteur en médecine virale, qui n’hésite pas en postface à situer Emerging dans la lignée du Décaméron, de Boccace, écrit peu après la grande épidémie de peste de 1347. La comparaison est pour le moins osée, et m’a fait sourire. Cependant, j’admets que le manga décrit de façon habile et réaliste les mécanismes d’une crise sanitaire majeure, ainsi que les comportements des acteurs et de la population en pareil cas, tout en respectant les règles de base d’un bon thriller : une lutte contre la montre, une équipe d’experts qui unissent leurs forces contre les incrédules, le cynisme des autorités qui ont d’autres priorités, l’influence occulte des laboratoires privés… Et surtout, l’identification du lecteur aux héros, gens plus ou moins ordinaires, aux prises avec leurs nerfs et leurs émotions.

Les personnages : Shun est le médecin idéaliste, empathique avec ses patients, qui sont sa priorité, comme on le voit notamment dans son  rapport avec la jeune Akari. Kaoru, lui, est le médecin brillant, qui réfléchit avec froideur et distance, et qui voit le cas et la pathologie avant le patient. Mlle Mori, directrice l’Institut Murakawa, est comme Kaoru, en pire : sorte de chercheuse foldingue, prête à tout pour la science (y compris à se mettre en danger), mais qui s’humanisera à travers l’épreuve. Sans oublier Oshima, le lycéen au physique de grizzly, petit ami d’Akari, qui détient, sans le savoir, un indice capital…

A la fois précis et épuré, le dessin de Masaya Hokazono réussit l’exploit de rendre crédible cette situation d’urgence, et de montrer les corps des malades et des mourants avec exactitude mais sans voyeurisme (bon, je vous ai épargné les dessins plus craspecs). Les expressions et les gestes font vrai, quelque part entre les styles de Taniguchi et de Motoro Mase, si j’ose le rapprochement.  Je serais curieux de découvrir les deux autres séries publiées chez nous (Inugami, et Girlfriend, Delcourt) de cet auteur expérimenté (en activité depuis 1982). En attendant, voilà déjà un titre court, classique et efficace, que je recommande à ceux qui aiment les seinen réalistes, et plus généralement à ceux qui cherchent des idées de one-shot ou de série courte, pour se reposer des marathons à 20 volumes ou plus…

    Même si le dessin m’avait beaucoup plus, ce manga m’avait laissé comme un gout d’inachevé. C’était la façon de traiter l’histoire qui me laissait perplexe sur certains points (pas sur tous). Plus de tomes auraient certainement permis de développer un sujet cher aux Japonais. 3 tomes, c’est peu si on y réfléchit bien.

    Manhole m’avait fait le même effet d’ailleurs.
