L’histoire :
Jun-Ichi Naruse est un jeune employé ordinaire, gentil, timide, effacé même. Il n’a que deux passions dans la vie : la peinture, à laquelle il s’adonne en amateur, et Megu, la mignonne vendeuse de la boutique d’arts plastiques où il achète ses couleurs. Récemment, il a enfin réussi à lui avouer sa flamme, et depuis, ils sortent ensemble ! Tout va donc pour le mieux. Fin de l’histoire. Mais en allant se renseigner à l’agence immobilière pour louer un appartement plus grand, il est pris dans ce qui semble être un braquage, le forcené pointe son revolver en direction d’une petite fille qui hurle de peur, Jun-Ichi s’interpose et le coup part… la balle lui traverse le cerveau.

Plusieurs mois après, Jun-Ichi émerge du coma dans un lit d’hôpital. Il apprend qu’il a été sauvé par une première mondiale : une greffe partielle de cerveau. Lors de son admission en urgence, il était le cobaye idéal, grâce à la disponibilité simultanée d’un cerveau de donneur compatible… Cela faisait des mois que le professeur Dôgen, neuro-chirurgien réputé, attendait pareille occasion. Mais justement. Pour autant que Jun-Ichi puisse en juger, l’opération qui l’a sauvé semble entachée de curieuses zones d’ombre. Pourquoi les médias doivent-ils tout ignorer? Pourquoi l’identité du donneur reste-t-elle secrète? Pourquoi le docteur Wakao, et la belle Naoko, les adjoints de Dôgen, sont-ils toujours à le surveiller? Et surtout… Pourquoi cette lancinante impression de ne plus être seul dans sa tête?

Ce que j’en pense :
Avant de rencontrer le succès que l’on sait avec sa série Ikigami, dont il est à la fois dessinateur et auteur, Motoro Mase s’était fait connaître chez nous par sa série précédente, Heads, d’après un roman de Keigo Higashino. Le quatrième volume de Heads inclut, en complément, trois récits courts de ses débuts. Un one-shot non traduit de 2001, Kyo-Ichi, est l’unique autre oeuvre du mangaka à ce jour.

Heads (c’est aussi le titre original japonais) est un thriller psychologique, je dirais même neuro-psychiatrique pour être précis. Partant d’une hypothèse scientifique de fiction, la transplantation partielle d’un cerveau humain, il pose des questions intéressantes au sujet de l’identité et de la conscience : qu’est-ce qui fait un individu ? Entre l’inné et de l’acquis, qu’est-ce qui est le plus important? La conscience existe-t-elle sans la mémoire? Et si non, la mémoire est-elle stockée dans le cerveau tel un disque dur, qui peut s’endommager, mais aussi être réparé?

L’auteur, Keigo Higashino, est connu au japon comme auteur de romans policiers à succès, certains couronnés de prix littéraires. Trois de ses romans ont été récemment traduits dans la collection Noire d’Actes Sud : La Maison où je suis mort autrefois (sorti en poche), Le Dévouement du suspect X et Un café maison – je les ai inscrits du coup sur mes tablettes. C’est un de ses romans qui a servi de base à Motoro Mase pour son manga. Sur un tel sujet, il aurait été normal d’aborder l’aspect éthique : qu’est-ce qui peut motiver et autoriser un praticien à transplanter un cerveau humain, supposé être le siège de la mémoire, donc de l’identité d’un individu? On n’est pas dans le cadre d’une transplantation cardiaque ou d’une greffe de foie. Mais cette question n’est pas posée, ou plutôt elle est balayée derrière une justification assez peu claire, vaguement validée par un projet gouvernemental. On n’en saura pas plus. Rien non plus sur les possibilités techniques actuelles en la matière : c’est une fiction, point. En revanche, le manga (donc, je suppose, le roman) se place entièrement du point de vue du sujet greffé, Jun-Ichi Naruse, et développe de façon dramatique le basculement progressif de sa personnalité. Le suspense plane sur les raisons de ce changement, et sur la question de savoir qui est le donneur, et si la partie greffée garde des traces de souvenirs du donneur – en clair, si une greffe de cerveau se traduit par une greffe de personnalité. A cette question, vous vous doutez que le manga réponde de manière positive, sinon il n’y aurait pas d’histoire.

Une autre interrogation se profile en second lieu, et elle est un des sujets principaux d’Ikigami : celle du sens de l’existence. Comme le dit Jun-Ichi : « Vivre, ce n’est pas seulement respirer et sentir son coeur battre ! C’est surtout laisser des traces de pas. » A savoir : pas d’identité sans mémoire. Plus clairement encore, il confesse :  « Vous ne pouvez pas imaginer… Se réveiller jour après jour à chaque fois différent de l’homme que l’on était la veille… Les souvenirs n’ont plus d’importance, la personnalité disparaît peu à peu dans le néant. Vous savez à quoi ça ressemble? Ça ressemble à la mort. » J’ai trouvé  Motoro Mase particulièrement convainquant dans la mise en scène du changement de la personnalité de Jun-Ichi. Tout en étant parfaitement ressemblant, c’est bien un nouveau personnage qui s’exprime avec le visage du héros, comme vous pouvez le voir en comparant la première et la dernière image qui illustrent ce billet. Les traits sont les mêmes, mais l’attitude, le regard, les sourcils, tout le reste change.

Au passage, avec ce changement de personnalité intervient un nouveau regard sur la société et la place que Jun-Ichi y occupe. Au départ personnage falot et soumis, satisfait de sa condition modeste et n’ayant pas d’autre ambition qu’une vie tranquille, Jun-Ichi adopte sous l’influence de son « hôte » un regard critique, voire révolté, sur les compromissions induites par sa propre médiocrité, et par la médiocrité de son entourage, surtout professionnel. Il découvre ce qu’il ne voyait pas : le manque d’envergure, l’absence d’initiative, le laisser-aller de ses collègues, avec leurs rites, leurs beuveries programmées, leurs échecs prévisibles… Au fond, Jun-Ichi opéré du cerveau devient comme un de ces personnages d’Ikigami, auxquels le préavis de mort a été donné : que faire des dernières heures de son existence, sinon faire le point et enfin être en paix avec soi-même? Colère, révolte, proclamation de certaines vérités taboues, et accomplissement de son propre destin… Quitte à blesser ou à tuer pour cela.

Je parle beaucoup de Jun-Ichi, mais le personnage de Megu, la jolie fiancée qui voit avec horreur se transformer son amoureux, est un des plus touchants que j’ai rencontrés. Elle est jolie sans plus, un peu étriquée, sans ambition elle non plus, mais démontre contre toute attente une lucidité et une capacité à prendre sur elle par amour qui forcent l’admiration.

Je m’aperçois que je n’ai pas encore évoqué les trois courts récits qui concluent le quatrième tome : le premier, intitulé Area, est à mon avis le plus intéressant, c’est celui qui a fait connaître Motoro Mase (prix Shogakukan du meilleur jeune auteur en 1998). Il l’a réalisé alors qu’il était à Londres, où il étudiait le cinéma. Récit assez original et percutant de science-fiction, il démontre un art de la… mise en scène assez prometteur, promesses tenues jusqu’à présent.

En conclusion, Heads mérite une lecture attentive, bien entendu si vous avez déjà apprécié Ikigami – cela va sans dire. Au-delà du fait qu’il permet d’assister à la naissance d’un grand mangaka, Heads possède assez de qualités – narration, mise en scène, thèmes abordés pour offrir un bon moment de lecture (malgré la laideur des couvertures – berk ! quelles couleurs). Et si on aime, comme c’est mon cas, le genre thriller/polar, c’est pile-poil.

    J’avais adoré ce manga à l’époque, et totalement bluffée par la mise en scène presque cinématographique de l’histoire.

    Je me souvient qu’à l’époque l’éditeur avait été futé/sympa, puisque chaque volume sortait environ 2 semaines après le précédent, histoire de pas casser le rythme de l’histoire.

      j’ignorais ce fait, au sujet de la parution, mais oui, ça fait sens. je les ai empruntés à ma médiathèque, et oui, la lecture des quatre tomes d’affilée est un avantage. je partage ton avis sur la qualité de la mise en scène, que je n’ai pas assez soulignée dans mon billet, à la relecture.

    C’est vrai que c’est assez bien fait, mais j’ai quand même trouvé ça très prévisible.
    Je n’étais pas non plus très satisfait de la « morale » à la fin.
