Dans le train qui les mène vers une petite ville de bord de mer, où ils vont chercher du travail, Yûta et sa compagne Mana remarquent un petit garçon qui voyage seul, avec un sac à dos qu’il surveille jalousement. Ignorant sa timidité, ils entament la conversation. Arrivés en gare, ils voient que le petit garçon, appelé Masato, est attendu par une belle femme en costume traditionnel, sa mère, mais celle-ci ne fait aucune démonstration d’effusion. Plus tard, Yûta et Mana se sont fait engager dans un chantier de construction de la petite ville. Ils écoutent les ouvriers et les employés parler de la mère de Masato, sur qui les rumeurs vont bon train. En effet, celle-ci est arrivée récemment pour épouser le notable local, lequel a aussitôt disparu dans un accident de mer… Depuis, la veuve habite la grande maison du haut de la falaise, sans se mêler aux habitants. Seuls le petit Masato et sa gentille gouvernante, Yukiye, descendent pour faire les courses.
Lorsque Yûta et Mana croisent de nouveau Masato, il se rendent compte que quelque chose ne tourne pas rond : celui-ci manifeste une peur panique à l’évocation de sa mère. Est-il maltraité? C’est lorsque survient une étrange altercation, une de trop, que Yûta décide de tirer les choses au clair…
Ce que j’en pense :
Mermaid’s Scar est la première réalisation de Morio Asaka, bien avant Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Gunslinger Girl et Nana (Madhouse). C’est le second OAV tiré de Mermaid Forest, manga de Rumiko Takahashi, bien moins connu que Lamu et Ranma 1/2. Notations à caractère strictement informatif, juste pour situer, vu que je ne connais aucune des oeuvres que je viens de citer autrement que de nom. Bref. Acheté par hasard, en raison du prix ridicule des notes de la jacquette, je m’étais dis qu’il serait intéressant de visionner cet OAV tiré d’une légende japonaise célèbre, qui veut que toute personne mangeant de la chair de sirène devienne immortelle. J’en parlais récemment, dans mon billet consacré au manga de Satoshi Kon, Kaikisen. Mais je ne m’attendais pas du tout à ce que j’allais voir.
Si, comme moi, vous découvrez Mermaid’s Scar sans la moindre information préalable, et qu’en outre vous n’avez pas fait gaffe à la petite mention en bas à gauche : « déconseillé aux moins de 12 ans » , vous risquez un sacré choc. Voire un gros malaise : 
car avec son ambiance paisible, ses jolis dessins lumineux, son chara design à l’ancienne et ses personnages plutôt ordinaires en apparence, le début du film n’annonce rien de ce qui va suivre. Bien sûr, une certaine tension s’instaure dès l’arrivée des personnages en ville, mais les belles images de pré-générique montrant un ballet de sirènes dans des eaux turquoise, puis les premières scènes de vie quotidienne sous un pur ciel d’été, n’étaient qu’apparences et fausses pistes. Pour basculer, au moment où on s’y attend le moins, dans le thriller psychopathe. Et là aussi, la suite est construite selon un jeu de faux-semblants, manipulant le spectateur contraint de croire ce qu’il voit, et ce que disent les personnages : plus dure sera la chute. 
Ce n’est pas que les scènes de violence m’aient particulièrement impressionné pour elles-mêmes : c’est qu’elles constituent une surprise désagréable et soudaine, une révélation brisant un tabou de l’anime. Je ne veux pas vous le dévoiler, mais j’ai pensé tour à tour à Psychose, à Shining, à Highlander et à l’Exorciste. Pas très kawai, hein?
En tous cas, l’effet a été tel, qu’il m’a fallu un second visionnage pour regarder la fin. Ben oui, le premier a été interrompu à la demande de madame Mackie, lorsqu’aux trois quarts du film (soit 10 mn avant la fin environ) le verdict est tombé : « j’aime pas du tout, mais alors pas du tout » pile au moment où… non, je ne vais pas le dire (en tous cas c’était tranchant).
Vous l’aurez compris, Mermaid’s Scar fait son petit effet, et jette un regard cru et inattendu sur les anciennes légendes du Japon. C’est vrai qu’ils sont souvent mignons, ou au pire grotesques, les yokai de nos anime et manga préférés. L’ondine de Kaikisen était mystérieuse, terrible, mais finalement bienveillante, à sa manière. Ici, avec un traitement réaliste, évoquant même en flash-back certains des pires moments de l’histoire japonaise, le merveilleux bascule dans le sordide, irrémédiablement.
Reste, au final, l’impression d’avoir fait un mauvais rêve. Cela dit, maintenant que je sais à quoi m’en tenir, si l’occasion se présente de lire le manga, et d’en savoir plus sur le passé de Yûka et Mana, les héros/témoins de Mermaid’s Scar, je n’hésiterai pas. J’ai lu qu’une série TV a également été tirée du manga, en 2003, sous le titre Mermaid Forest, mais il paraît que même après avoir gommé certains aspects les plus violents de l’histoire originale, elle a été jugée trop dure par le diffuseur (TV Tokyo) et arrêtée en cours de route pour finir en OAV (à vérifier). Si quelqu’un la connaît (Kazé a distribué un coffret 3 DVD – à droite), je veux bien un avis à son sujet.
J’ai été tentée à plus d’une reprise d’acquérir ce titre à cause
du prix ridiculedes notes de la jacquette sans jamais me décider à franchir le pas (La peur de tomber sur une gnangnantise ss doute).Et à la suite de ton article, j’avoue ne toujours pas savoir si je vais le franchir ou pas. Mais au moins maintenant j’ai les idées claires quant au contenu.
Je ne connais Mermaid’s Scar que de nom, donc je ne me prononcerai pas ; là, tu donnes moyennement envie…
Par contre, si tu as l’occasion de lire Lamu, fais-toi une fleur. Ce manga (un de mes favoris) mélange SF, folklore japonais, et délire humoristique. L’anime quant à lui a été partiellement réalisé par un Mamoru Oshii encore jeune, en particulier le film Beautiful Dreamer, lequel préfigure bien son travail futur.
–> Guu & Gemini : oui, pour donner envie, je n’avais pas la flamme. Pas la flemme non plus, c’est juste que l’histoire m’a tellement surpris dans le tour qu’elle a pris, que je me demande encore moi-même si j’ai aimé ou non. A défaut de le recommander, je conseille tout de même sa découverte à ceux qui sont d’un naturel curieux, qui ne sont pas débutants en anime et qui ne sont pas trop sensibles. Et aussi à ceux (ou celles) qui s’intéressent plus spécialement à la manière dont le manga et l’anime s’approprient l’imaginaire traditionnel japonais (les yokai, les monstres, tout ça…). En ce qui me concerne, à cette occasion, j’ai quand même appris des choses sur le sujet.
Le manga est à peine mieux, certes on y apprend le passé des héros, mais il tourne assez vite en rond et raconte au fond toujours la même chose malgré sa brièveté. De souvenir je crois même que je lui avais préféré l’OVA, mais ça date du siècle dernier faut pas m’en vouloir si j’ai oublié les détails.
bon ben comme ça c’est réglé. à moins de le trouver à 2€, bien sûr, comme le hasard des dépôts-vente le permet parfois.

Ça fait longtemps que je les ai vus, je ne m’en souviens plus trop. Le manga contient lui aussi des histoires bien glauques et on voit le moment où les héros deviennent immortels (et la vraie gueule des sirènes… Qui sont, euh…).
Je ne veux pas faire de pub mais il existe un box chez Kaze qui regroupe les 2 OAVs, la série de 2003 plus les 13 épisodes de Rumiko Takahashi Anthologie. C’est à moins de 10 eur et encore en stock sur un gros marchand en ligne qui commence par un A par exemple.
