Du retard dans mes tomes 1 (et pas seulement)

Avant, j’achetais tellement de livres que je n’arrivais pas à les lire au même rythme. Avantage : maintenant que je fais plus attention à mes sous, j’ai ainsi constitué un stock dans lequel je continue à piocher de temps à autres. Inconvénient : si vous saviez la place que ça prend… Aujourd’hui, il m’arrive un phénomène sans doute banal pour bon nombre de blogueurs, mais pour moi encore inhabituel, et que je ne gère pas très bien : je dévore les mangas (et les romans) bien plus vite que je n’écris à leur sujet. Et c’est ainsi qu’en fin d’année dernière, je me suis retrouvé à écrire un bilan de rattrapage, dans lequel je passais en revue 23 titres différents, avec des jugements contrastés qui, pour certains, m’ont valu en retour quelques tirs de chevrotine.

Et quand je vois la quantité de séries que j’ai commencées en 2012, qu’elles soient anciennes (Full Metal Alchemist, Galaxy Express 999, L’Ecole du Ciel, Macross 7 Trash, Vagabond…) ou nouvelles (Billy Bat, Bonne nuit Punpun, Sanctum, Seven Shakespeares, Thermae Romae…), sur lesquelles je n’ai toujours pas écrit une ligne, j’ai des sueurs froides. Trois semaines d’absence post-Japan Expo pour cause de vacances n’ont, évidemment, rien arrangé. J’ai continué à lire et à ne rien écrire. Allez hop, donc, une chronique fourre-tout pour rattraper le coup. Et que des tomes 1, histoire de me donner facilement bonne conscience.

Un gag manga parodique en strip de quatre cases, transposant l’univers de NGE dans une école primaire avec le staff de la Nerv comme corps enseignant, dont Evas, anges et children sont les élèves? Sincèrement, que dire? Acheté récemment un jour de faiblesse, poussé par je ne sais quelle curiosité d’evafan, j’ai vaguement souri deux fois en lisant ce truc uniquement conçu pour vendre des goodies Bandai. On m’objectera que ce titre s’adresse à un public enfantin. Certes, mais les « gags » (si on peut les appeler ainsi) sont tellement éculés et téléphonés qu’à côté, Boule et Bill c’est les Monty Python. Point fort : à peine plus de 120 pages. Au moins, ça ne dure pas longtemps. Poubelle.

Tome deux en semptembre 2012

L’histoire : dans un univers moyenâgeux et occidental, non déterminé (Angleterre? Allemagne?), un jeune marchand ambulant découvre une étrange passagère clandestine dans sa carriole : une déesse louve qui a pris une (jolie) forme humaine, mis à part quelques attributs en fourrure d’origine. Elle cherche à retrouver le pays mythique et perdu d’où elle vient, et lui demande pour cela de l’accepter dans ses pérégrinations.
Ce que j’en pense : n’ayant pas vu l’anime, si un hasard objectif ne me m’avait pas mis ce manga entre les mains, je serais probablement passé à côté : les furry girls, franchement, c’est pas mon truc. Mais au lieu de l’ecchi bizarre que je craignais, je me retrouve avec un seinen bien écrit, qui prend son temps pour présenter les personnages, grâce à l’accent mis sur les dialogues, et à une intrigue réaliste qui évite le graveleux. Spice & Wolf bénéficie également d’un dessin clair, fin et même séduisant dans ses quelques pages bonus couleur bienvenues (merci à Ototo de ne pas les avoir sucrées). A ce stade, difficile d’en dire plus, mais si la série garde ce cap tranquille, avec un poil (hihi) d’action supplémentaire peut-être, voilà un titre que je vais suivre avec curiosité. Vraiment une bonne surprise.

L’histoire : dans le futur, deux superpuissances (l’américaine contre l’asiatique) se disputent une île du pacifique riche en ressources, et basculent dans un conflit ultra-violent, que nous suivons à travers le regard de journalistes correspondants de guerre.
Évidemment, on change de registre et pas qu’un peu avec ce seinen de guerre, tiré d’un jeu vidéo du même nom, fait qui suscite chez moi une méfiance a priori. Or ce premier tome n’est pas du tout une apologie virile des méchas, ni un spin-off au rabais pour gamers hardcore. Au contraire, il prend le contrepied de l’adaptation facile pour proposer une plongée réaliste dans un conflit plausible, en posant de nombreuses questions qui dérangent : le décalage entre l’horreur du théâtre des évènements et sa perception par un public civil éloigné et soumis à la propagande. Dès les premiers dessins, le ton est donné : malgré toutes les technologies voulant nous faisant croire à une guerre propre, rien de ressemble plus à une guerre qu’une autre guerre, avec son cortège d’atrocités, meurtres de civils, viols, exécutions, etc. Les personnages principaux ne sont pas des héros, ils ont peur, ils cherchent à survivre ou au contraire trouvent dans l’ultra-violence une nouvelle dimension à leur existence jusque-ici médiocre.
Ce qui m’inquiète, toutefois, c’est que tout semble déjà dit en un seul tome, qui se conclut presque à la manière d’un one-shot. Est-ce que ce Front Mission peut tenir la distance de ses ambitions initiales?  Des critiques récentes des tomes suivants m’en font douter. Mais j’ai quand même envie de me faire ma propre idée. A suivre, donc.

L’histoire : la rumeur enfle : un justicier, qui se dissimule sous un masque en papier-journal, annonce systématiquement sur les réseaux sociaux les actions punitives qu’il programme contre des individus jugés responsables de crimes ou d’injustices sociales. Ces prophéties se réalisent dans une extrême violence, incendies, enlèvements, tortures, meurtres. La brigade de lutte contre la cybercriminalité est chargée de l’enquête.
« First published in France by Ki-oon, 2012 » : allez, j’ose le dire, ça fait rudement plaisir de lire ça en page de crédits. Annoncé en seulement trois tomes (et à grand renforts de communication promotionnelle, qui ne vous auront pas échappé je pense), c’est le grand retour de Tetsuya Tsutsui, dont je vous ai dit il n’y a pas si longtemps tout le bien que je pense de ses mangas précédents. Alors, ce Prophecy, qu’est-ce qu’il vaut vraiment? Et bien, il reprend les thèmes déjà abordés avec Duds Hunt et Reset, en systématisant une critique sociale sans concession sur la société japonaise actuelle : inégalités, racisme, cynisme, indifférence. Sans empiéter sur l’interview que j’ai pu réaliser de son auteur pour Total MangaTsutsui a souhaité mettre en images sa vision on ne peut plus sombre, sans l’édulcorer de quelque manière que ce soit. Et j’ai trouvé cela passionnant. Difficile d’en dire plus sans révéler l’intrigue, qui va très vite et dévoile dès ce premier tome les tenants et aboutissants. Une première révélation de taille se profile dès les dernières pages : les motivations réelles du (des?) justicier(s) masqué(s). Mais j’en ai déjà trop dit : vivement le tome suivant. J’espère rapidement.

    Tes impressions sur Front Mission sont bonnes, car effectivement les tomes suivant proposent des histoires moins intéressantes, comme si ce premier tome suffisait à faire le tour ; en tout cas, sur les 3 volumes que j’ai lu avant de revendre la série, c’était de loin le premier le plus plaisant à lire.
    Petit Eva, clairement un piège à fan alors que ce sont justement les fans qui ont le plus de chance d’être déçus. J’ai eu le premier tome en SP, je ne l’aurais jamais acheté sinon ; et depuis, je m’en suis séparé.
    Sinon, Prophecy, je demande à voir sur la longueur. Comme toi, j’ai adoré les deux one-shots de l’auteur, par contre sa série plus longue ne m’a pas passionné malgré une variation originale sur le thème de la pandémie ; l’auteur doit encore prouver qu’il est capable de gérer une série de plus d’un tome.

      S’agissant de Manhole, j’ai eu confirmation que la série avait pas trop marché, alors que Duds Hunt et Reset continuent à se vendre, et pas seulement depuis la promo sur Prophecy. Le bouche à oreille y a été pour beaucoup. Tsutsui (qui est vraiment très sympa mais m’a l’air très sensible et timide comme garçon) a confirmé que c’est à cause de cet échec, qui l’a beaucoup affecté, qu’il a connu une traversée du désert de 6 ans.

    Du tas, peut-être que je me laisserais tenter par Prophecy. Mais je préfère attendre les retours sur les futurs tomes comme je n’ai jamais vraiment adhéré aux autres titres de l’auteur.
    Et je suis inquiet, j’ai pas entendu parler de Punpun sur ce blog :/

    Il est effectivement difficile de lire beaucoup et d’avoir le temps d’écrire des chroniques intéressantes! Si c’est pour énoncer des banalités, autant ne rien faire, c’est pourquoi je ne participe que rarement à un blog collectif créé avec un copain, et c’est pourquoi je prends du plaisir à lire le tien, car tu apportes toujours un plus! Je consacre donc mon temps à la lecture des ouvrages, mais aussi des blogs de ceux qui savent écrire sur eux!

    Au sujet de Spice & Wolf, les oeuvres originales sont des livres que je vous conseille fortement. Ils sont au nombre de 16 Tomes plus un épilogue, qui ne sont pas sortis en France, mais relativement simple à trouver sur amazon dans la langue de Shakespeare, pour les non anglophobe.
    Personnellement, j’en suis au tome 6, et si ça peut vous rassurer, la série ne devis pas dans le ecchi ou quoi que ce soit, bien au contraire. Comme vous avez su le cerner, la force de cette œuvre réside principalement dans ses dialogues, parfois (très) complexe et son réalisme (les personnages, le monde économique et religieux ne sont pas traités à la légère. On y trouve par ailleurs une assez bonne critique de l’église). Les personnages et les sentiments évoluent au travers du voyage qu’ils entreprennent ensembles (et des évènements qui se produisent sur leurs chemin), mais sans jamais tomber dans le facile ou le gnangnan. On y découvre des personnages plus complexes et touchant que prévus, qui chacun ont leurs forces et leurs faiblesses.
    Pour ce qui est de l’action, il n’y en à pas tellement, car la plupart des batailles sont des « batailles marchandes » peintes de manière réaliste, qui au détriment de l’action, font monter la tension du lecteur (pour des raisons que je ne peut pas écrire, malheureusement, mais les enjeux qui semblent à première vue sans importances, se révèle parfois grands, voir inestimables).

    Voilà ce qu’il en est pour le moment, et j’espère que les prochains tomes irons dans la même direction. Pour ma part, je n’ai pas lu les mangas car une connaissance me les à déconseillés, mais du coup, je vais me laisser tenter. Tout ceci pour dire : Si les mangas vous ont plus, laissez vous tenter par les livres desquels ils sont inspirés : C’est beau, doux, poétique, mais parfois dur, dans un monde marchand et religieux sans pitié. C’est ma perle du moment, en somme.
