Les interviews du newbie : Pierre-Alain Dufour, de nobi nobi !

Si vous avez prévu d’aller au prochain Salon du livre de Paris, qui se tient dans un mois (du 22 au 25 mars), j’imagine que vous irez probablement faire un tour du côté du Manga Square, où plusieurs éditeurs présenteront leurs nouveautés (programme et liste des invités consultable ici). Profitez-en donc pour aller faire un saut juste à côté, sur le stand Y25, où vous attendent les jolis livres de nobi nobi!, le jeune éditeur français de livres jeunesse sur la culture japonaise. En octobre dernier, lors de Japan Expo Centre, j’avais eu le plaisir de rencontrer Pierre-Alain Dufour, co-fondateur avec Olivier Pacciani de nobi nobi!, qui avait eu la gentillesse et la patience de répondre à quelques questions le dimanche soir, alors que tous les exposants étaient occupés à démonter leurs stands ! Nous avons eu tout de même eu le temps, avant que l’organisation me rappelle avec le sourire (mais avec fermeté!) que l’heure était franchement dépassée, d’échanger sur le parcours et l’actualité de cette petite maison, qui a su se créer une identité originale, et surtout une place sur le marché très difficile de l’édition de livres pour enfants.

Bonjour Pierre-Alain Dufour, fondateur, mais pas tout seul, de Nobi Nobi !
Non, pas tout seul, on est deux avec Olivier Pacciani. On s’est rencontrés en 2004 lorsqu’on travaillait chez un éditeur de mangas, Taifu Comics, lui était responsable artistique et moi responsable de la comm’. Lorsque des changements importants sont intervenus dans cette maison, Olivier et moi l’avons quittée en même temps, en 2007, et l’envie de travailler ensemble et de fonder une maison d’édition est venue rapidement. Nous nous sommes posés la question : allions-nous éditer du manga, ce que nous avions toujours connu et que nous savions déjà faire ? Nous avons étudié le marché, et il nous est apparu que tout ce qui pouvait nous intéresser dans le manga se faisait déjà plus ou moins, à part peut-être le yaoi, mais cela ne nous tentait pas. Le secteur du shonen nous semblait saturé. Or il se trouve que je lisais déjà pas mal de livres pour enfants, pour mon plaisir – j’aime beaucoup les graphismes des illustrateurs de livres pour enfants- et c’est comme ça que l’idée est venue. Qu’est-ce qui existe comme livres pour enfants d’auteurs japonais, en France ? Et même au Japon ? Avec Olivier on s’est aperçus que personne n’en faisait, ou presque. Paradoxalement, les rares exemples d’auteurs japonais publiés en France n’avaient pas de liens directs avec la culture japonaise.

Comment s’est développé ce projet ?
On a mis deux ans à peaufiner notre ligne éditoriale. Il faudrait que tu voies les projets qu’on avait décidé de sortir au début ! Il nous a fallu vite évoluer. Nous l’avons fait en nous confrontant aux professionnels, les libraires, les bibliothécaires. En fait, nous venions du milieu du manga, où la concurrence se limitait à l’époque à 9/10 éditeurs, et nous arrivions dans l’édition de livres pour enfants, en nous retrouvant face à plus de 250 concurrents ! Y compris de très gros éditeurs généralistes, qui ont une branche spécialisée pour les enfants. On arrivait avec nos projets et les libraires nous disaient « non, ça j’en ai déjà des dizaines dans mes rayons. » Donc il fallait se démarquer : d’une part, affirmer notre identité en allant chercher au Japon des titres qui nous correspondaient vraiment, et d’autre part, faire de la création – chose qui nous apparaissait inaccessible au départ. C’est ainsi qu’est née l’idée, un peu folle, de créer ce qui ne se faisait ni en France ni au Japon, avec de nouveaux auteurs.

Donc c’était un double défi : se lancer sur un secteur ultra-concurrentiel en faisant de la création, avec des auteurs et des graphistes nouveaux, dont certains ne parlent pas français…
Oui. Je précise quand même que notre catalogue se répartit actuellement à égalité entre l’acquisition de licences et la création.

Par rapport aux éditeurs français de manga, c’est sans commune mesure !
C’est vrai. Mais ce n’est plus notre secteur. En ce qui concerne les licences, notre volonté est de faire découvrir au public français des auteurs déjà publiés au Japon – c’est le cas avec Kunio Katô et Kenya Hirata (La maison en petits cubes), ou encore Tadashi Akiyama (la série des Tamago). Alors que la création procède de la démarche inverse : partir de ce que demande le public français, c’est-à-dire un design typiquement manga.

 Comment marche Nobi Nobi ! aujourd’hui ? Combien de salariés ?
Aucun. On est une SARL. J’en suis le gérant non salarié, Olivier est mon associé et il avait encore récemment un job à côté. S’imposer en jeunesse, là où il y a 250 maisons concurrentes, est difficile. Avec notre étude du marché, on savait qu’il allait nous falloir trois, quatre ans minimum pour commencer à faire des bénéfices, on pense d’ailleurs commencer à se rémunérer vers courant 2013. Avant ça aurait été impossible. D’ailleurs, dans ce métier, si tu te lances et que tu vas voir un libraire en lui disant que tu te rémunères, il ne va probablement rien dire mais il sait que tu vas droit dans le mur. Aujourd’hui, si tu vas au salon du livre de Montreuil, tu verras plein d’éditeurs qui ont peut-être un ou deux CDD, mais qui ne se paient pas eux-mêmes. Beaucoup ont une activité à côté.

Quelles sont vos collections qui marchent le mieux ?
Cela dépend des collections. 1, 2, 3 Soleil, notre collection destinée aux plus petits (à partir de 3 ans), fonctionne un peu moins bien que celle avec des graphismes manga, mais c’est normal, ce marché est un peu plus restreint. Soleil Flottant, notre gamme de contes traditionnels illustrés (à partir de 6 ans) marche beaucoup plus, et nous en sommes très heureux car c’est celle qui définit le mieux notre identité éditoriale. Après il y a nos coups de cœur, comme La Maison en petits cubes, qui est clairement notre best-seller : 6,000 exemplaires, 3ème édition en six mois depuis son lancement en mars 2012.

Pour ceux qui l’ignorent encore, La Maison en petits cubes c’est tiré de l’Oscar du meilleur court-métrage d’animation en 2009.
Effectivement, le livre est adapté du court-métrage de Kunio Katô (dessin et réalisation) et Kenya Hirata (scénario), qui n’a pas remporté seulement l’Oscar mais aussi des prix à Annecy et à Hiroshima. Kunio Katô a ensuite lui-même décidé d’en faire un livre, toujours avec Kenya Hirata, mais cette fois en y ajoutant du texte (le film était sans paroles). C’est l’histoire d’un vieux monsieur qui retrouve ses souvenirs en voyageant à travers ses anciennes maisons, qui sont immergées sous l’océan. Le livre était déjà sorti depuis 2-3 ans au Japon, et nous sommes ravis d’être ceux qui l’ont publié en France. Notre participation au Salon du Livre 2012, avec le Japon à l’honneur, a attiré l’attention du public et des médias ; mais s’il marche bien c’est avant tout parce qu’il s’adresse à tous les publics, aux enfants bien sûr, mais aussi aux parents et aux grands-parents qui sont touchés par l’histoire.

Un livre transgénérationnel, un peu comme 1000 Vents, 1000 Violoncelles.
Oui, encore que 1000 Vents, 1000 Violoncelles est différent parce que même si c’est la rencontre entre deux enfants qui étudient le violoncelle, ça reste basé sur un arrière-plan assez dur, celui du tremblement de terre à Kobé en 1995. La Maison en petits cubes, même si ça raconte l’histoire d’un vieux monsieur veuf, qui se retrouve tout seul dans sa maison, est un livre lumineux, c’est un hymne à la vie, il a vécu tant de choses qu’il est enrichi par sa vie.

Parlons des contes traditionnels. Il y a notamment Hôichi, La légende des samouraïs disparus, adapté d’après un récit de Lafcadio Hearn. Y aura-t-il d’autres adaptations du même genre ?
Hôichi, c’est un des rares titres de la collection des contes qui était déjà sorti au Japon. Nous avons été séduits en premier lieu par les illustrations. Et c’est une histoire très connue dans la culture japonaise. Parmi les récits du recueil Kaidan, de Lafcadio Hearn, c’est celui qui est le plus facile pour des enfants. Les autres histoires, bien que très connues aussi, sont quand même assez noires, presque d’horreur, avec des fantômes. Pour l’instant, nous ne voyons pas d’autres histoires qui pourraient être adaptées. Après, on se tourne vers d’autres auteurs que nous souhaiterions adapter, par exemple Kenji Miyazawa, l’auteur de Goshu le Violoncelliste : voilà une histoire qu’on aimerait bien adapter et éditer. De Miyazawa, je pense aussi au Train de la Voie Lactée. Ce sont des histoires merveilleuses, et qui sont encore peu connues en France. On va de toutes façons développer le thème des contes traditionnels et populaires, si possible en cherchant des récits dont le héros est un garçon, car on nous a un peu reproché de faire surtout des histoires de princesses ! Mais bon, ça s’explique parce que nous travaillons actuellement surtout avec des illustratrices (Ein Lee, Shiitake) qui ont plus de facilité à dessiner des héroïnes ! Donc voilà, nous recherchons donc des illustrateurs qui aiment bien dessiner des garçons… En 2013, si tout va bien, des choses devraient se faire dans cette direction.

Comment Nobi nobi ! recrute ses artistes ?
De manière très pragmatique. Nous avons recherché des artistes dès le lancement, on a recruté Ein Lee sur deviantart, par exemple. C’est une artiste qui nous accompagne depuis le début, elle est très importante pour nous. Shiitake, nous l’avons rencontrée à Japan Expo, elle avait son propre stand. Shiitake est un pseudo, l’origine n’en est pas très claire mais ça lui est resté, voilà ! (rires) Comme ça se passe bien, que le public est réceptif, on va bien sûr continuer à travailler avec elles. Ein Lee a des projets en dehors de Nobi Nobi !, donc ce n’est pas sûr quelle sorte un nouvel album avec nous en 2013. Quoi qu’il en soit le recrutement de nouveaux artistes reste une priorité.
